Cabot's Jarrah Gloss Water Based Stain & Varnish 250ml - Scratch Resistant Interior Finish
14-day returns

I bought this to repair a small section of floor (1.2x1.4 m), I had read other reviews on poor quality but felt that surely I could make sure I got a good finish on a small section. Boy was I wrong...as many others reported, I found that it dries almost instantly and was impossible to get a good finish with even after experimenting to get best possible application process (sponge, very thinly applied to minimise streaking applied in cool conditions). This product most probably ruins whatever it is applied to and should not be knowing sold. I now need to re-sand and will use an oil based non-cabots product. Photo below.

I bought this on 14/4/22 so I can refurbish my coffee table. I have never stained anything in my life before so I was a little hesitant. After doing a lot of research about stains and varnishes I decided to purchase the Marita grey colourI did 4 coats on this waiting a couple of hours between each coat it wasn’t as grey as I expected but I’m quite happy with how it turned out. I used a foam brush to apply the stain and wiped off excess almost immediately with a rag. Also dries quite quickly

I purchased this in black for a dining table, one tin was barely enough to cover 3 coats on a 1900x900 pine panel, and the coverage was nothing like the colour sample in store, would need another 2 costs to get it closer to the sample. On the upside, its low odour, dries quickly and is very easy to apply. I applied with a brush going along the grains after sanding and pepping the surface. Overall, came out OK with more of a rustic look finish.

This review is very low not due to the varnish, in fact the varnish which had a nice orangy colour and dried quickly and smoothly same as other stains in this brand, its a nice product by Cabots. The problem on this review is Bunnings online order who dispatched an old rusty tin which seemed previously opened and something that looked like a manufacturing date 2013 which is like 8 years ago. I opened and used because I wanted to finish a project, but not a nice experience overall.
We originally wanted the Jarrah but it only comes in 1L tins because, according to Cabot, they can't put it in 4L tins because reasons. So we had the option of spending $280 for 4x 1L time, or get a similar tint in 4L for half that. We went cheap. We chose Australian Jarrah. A fairly nice brown. Not as nice as the Jarrah, but close...ish.What we got was red. Not brown, red. I felt like Homer looking at the picture of the BBQ then at what he made. The colour isn't even close to their sample in store. Then spreading it was a nightmare. As per Cabot's I was advised to use lambs wool for the sealant, then a roller for the strain. DO NOT USE A ROLLER FOR THE STAIN. It will be patchy and look terrible. Use the lamb's wool again.Avoid Cabot like the plague. A range that appears to be limited to maximise their profits, and not to assist people.Since this is the only water based timber product that Bunnings stocks, we will be going elsewhere in the future.
Brought this recently recommended by bunning staff, that it 2 in 1 - Stain and varnish, but It didnt do the varnish work, we want grossy but it doesnt. Spent $70 for this and now we have to buy some clear varnish again to give it a grossy look
I bought this to stain/varnish some plywood panels. I really like the colour. It is however very difficult to apply evenly without marks - I tried with brush and roller. I also think that the “gloss finish” is not very glossy - much closer to silk/semi gloss. I did meticulously follow the instructions - lots of sanding/cleaning beforehand and sanding between coats. I’ve come to the conclusion that water based varnishes as a whole may be convenient but actually are just not very good.
I bought this to restore a dining table. What a waste! It dries very quickly. After the first coat, it was uneven. It didn’t match the colour in store. And the finish was awful. I’m now sanding back the entire table again and have thrown out the Cabot’s. Will be using a different brand. What an absolute waste of time and money. Take this off the shelves!
I used this to finish a pine panel for the top of my desk. Products drys quick, so if you are in Qld like me, be quick with it. Also if you have a large surface roll it don’t brush. My first coat was a brush and last two rolled. I’m happy with the results. Also if you don’t mix the product well, it will be blotchy.
The promise of simplifying our project with a one pot product lured us into the trap of buying this product. And once you start a large project with a certain stain there is no going back. The 'settling' at the bottom of the tin was VERY difficult to shift and never fully blended into the rest of the contents no matter how much it was mixed. I believe this separated element was the varnish so not having it fully mixed in compromised the level of varnishing that was achieved. It goes off super quickly which makes it challenging to achieve an even finish. We ended up buying 5ltrs whereas it should have been 2ltrs according to the coverage outlined on the tin, This made the Stain and Varnish exorbitantly overpriced
