I am really pleased with the Cambridge Audio ALVA-ST which I bought two weeks ago to replace an aging Dual CS 505-2 turntable. The ALVA record deck complements the Cambridge Audio AXR100D DAB/FM stereo receiver and Fyne Audio F302 speakers which I bought from Richer Sounds just over a year ago.I was grateful for the helpful advice given to me in the Watford branch, especially the suggestion that I should use the built-in phono preamp in the ALVA, since it would be of a higher specification than that in the receiver.I was also interested to discover that I could connect the devices using Bluetooth, with only a small loss of sound quality. This would be a useful feature if the turntable had to be placed in a different part of the room. However, the use of high ... I love the convenience of having the Bluetooth turntable. My wife loves the fact that it is inconspicuous in our living room. It pairs very nicely with the Focal Bathys headphone with aptx and the EQ in the app till works to allow adjustments for my less than stellar high frequency hearing. The AirPod pro2 will pair but only in SBC and the custom accommodation settings are disabled on the iPhone when you are paired to the Cambridge ST yielding a listening experience far inferior to the Focal. I did purchase an upgrade to my needle the 95ML though I haven't tried it yet and I am not unhappy with the 95E it came with. All in all I highly recommend the Cambridge ST and Focal Bathys combo. There is an Earth Ground Cable between the Alva ST and the Alva Duo7. The Output Level Switch on the Alva ST is set to Phono8. I have Serial BUS cables from the 851N Out to the 851A In and from the 851A Out to the 851C In and no loopback9. The 851N also has a Mac Mini Media Player attached using a Chord Company Shawline USB cable to USB Audio In and a Samsung TV using a standard Toslink cable to D210. The 851N is connected to Ethernet using a Unifi USW Lite 8 PoE connected directly to a Unifi Dream Machine11. I am using Dali Rubicon 2 speakers single wired with Chord Company Shawline speaker cable with factory fitted banana plugs and trousersWhen I used the internal phone stage it was flawless. However, my issue was that if I used the Alva Duo external phono stage and selected the Alva Duo and ST Turntable when the Azur 851N is on (no matter what source is selected) I get a high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers. I used a second Alva Duo I had in another setup and it was the same.I contacted Richer Sounds and they arranged a replacement turntable. However, the replacement turntable had the same issue so I did some investigation. If I turned off the 851N the tone and clicking disappeared. If I removed the Alva Duo and play the Alva ST directly through the internal Phono Stage by setting the Output Level switch to Line there is no high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers. In order to diagnose the issue, with the help of Alan Kerr from Richer Sounds in Glasgow (who have been very supportive throughout this) I did the following:1. I replaced the Dali speakers with B&W 702 speakers both single wired and bi-wired and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers2. I replaced every cable in the system using the same type of cable and still got the same high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers3. I replaced the Alva ST with a Project Pro Carbon turntable and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers4. I replaced the 851A with a CA CX80A and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers5. I got a replacement Alva Duo and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers6. I replaced the Alva Duo with and Alva Solo and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers7. I replaced the Ground earth cable between the Alva ST and Alva Duo8. I removed the 851C from the configuration and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers9. I removed the Mac Mini from the configuration and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers10. I removed the TV from the configuration and still got the high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakers11. I isolated all power from the rest of the mains by running it through a surge protected PDU12. I replaced the Alva Duo with a CA 651P and there is no high pitched tone and a clicking through the speakersIt appeared that the issue is only there when I have an Alva Duo or Solo Phono Stage in line with the Azur 851N switched on so I assumed that there was some form of incompatibility between the Alva Phono Stages and the Azur 851N, or that there is a fault with the 851N. This is unusual as the 851N should not be part of the analogue signal path. Fortunately I was able to swap out the Azur 851N for a CXN V2. Same issue, so it had to go back to the turntable that was causing the problem. However, with in excess of £7,000 of hifi equipment and speakers and high quality cabling I would expect that the Cambridge Audio components would co-exist without any issue; the fact that they did not was extremely frustrating.I contacted Cambridge Audio and they set up the exact same configuration in a lab and were able to replicate the issue! They isolated the problem and asked me to return the Alva turntable and carried out a few component replacements. It has been returned and sounds stunning using an external phono stage and now gives me the sound I was looking for. It is a great turntable and this has been augmented by some outstanding customer support from Cambridge Audio.

I've had this deck since the end of August 2023 and I'm very pleased with the quality of sound. Moving from an old technics deck, I was surprised to hear a huge jump in sound quality that has allowed me to enjoy far greater detail on playback. The base is amazingly rich and mid range and treble work together wonderfully - something I hadn't noticed in LP's before, even with a well respected, albeit budget (and old!) Technics deck! Don't be fooled by a rather scathing What HIFI review that I think called the Alva ST something like 'sluggish' - nothing could be further from the truth and I struggle to comprehend their conclusions. The build quality is excellent and although I don't use the inboard Bluetooth capability or phono stage at the moment, they are a nice thing to have as one day I might! The built in phono stage is well renowned but I have yet to check performance against an external unit I already own and I'm a firm believer in keeping separates separate! I did have an issue with the stylus in the first few months, but the Cambridge Audio after sales team were absolutely fantastic at resolving the problem and couldn't do enough for customer service. Overall I would highly recommend this turntable and after comparing it with a couple of other products in a similar price range owned by my family, I couldn't be happier. I would definately buy from Cambridge Audio again.
I've been looking to upgrade my 30 year old Technics record player and have been regularly checking Richer Sounds. This great deal for Cambridge Audio Alva ST dropped into my inbox during their Black Friday promotion. So along with reading the specifications etc and the very helpful reviews from the ordinary but knowledgeable punters, I was hooked and decided to purchase. As usual with Richer Sounds (and the cheerful delivery guy) the process was absolutely fantastic. I am so pleased with my new turntable, it was an easy process to put it together and then to start listening to my long treasured vinyl. Wonderful, I am very happy. Thank you Richer Sounds!
Lovely built item as the design is elegant my surprise is it has only manual movement with the stylus having to be manually placed onto the vinyl which I found out after purchasing the item and with the cost you have to fork out you think it should have some kind of automatic movement. From what I hear is it is highly rated from customers but professional reviewers claim a poor design which What Hi Fi provided it with only three stars. I cannot believe that a few hundred pounds turntable from Sony has many features and this with a more expensive price tag has less features, though the quality of design is different as you would expect. Even the stylus needs a change to something with more give of sound. As I am not a professional but a beginner in separates I have ... As I am not a professional but a beginner in separates I have learnt a lot from What HiFi and the difference ordinary paying customers think of this turntable and I am confused as I did expect customers like myself I thought would want automatic movement but when I read the reviews there is no mention of concern with the need to manually move the stylus to play and stop return. Not sure now to keep the Cambridge turntable or get rid of it. I have made myself confused though love the design but concerned with its shortcomings in not being automatic but it maybe that I’m just a lazy person
I bought this to replace my old Pioneer deck which had eventually packed up after over 40 years good service. After a little research and a phone call to ‘Richer Sounds’ for some practical advice I opted for the Cambridge Audio Alva ST. It’s only just arrived, but I’m very pleased with it. Very straight forward to set up alongside a new amplifier, also purchased from Richer Sounds and my original Celestrion Dutton speakers, which are still going strong. Very well made, a nice finish and a real feel of quality when operating.
I took delivery of my Cambridge Audio Alva ST turntable on 20 March. I hadn’t listened to any of my vinyl records for 22 plus years, perhaps 30 years and I’ve wanted to listen to them again for some time.In buying the turntable, I was concerned with connectivity and the Bluetooth option appealed to me. I must admit that the price, compared to the original price, was also a factor. I must admit that the price, compared to the original price, was also a factor. To some extent, I took a risk in buying without listening but what I’ve got more than meets my needs. The turntable arrived quickly and took some careful unpacking - it was extremely securely boxed. I haven’t had to assemble a turntable since about 1978 and I struggled a bit. The bits went together OK but I didn’t find the “Quick Start” instructions sufficient by themselves. It’s wiser to use the online instructions, which are more comprehensive but even so, the author assumed some knowledge, which I didn’t have.My last turntable counterweight was adjusted using numbers on a dial but the Alva ST is adjusted using an Ortofon device. Sadly, I didn’t know what it was supposed to do so it may help anyone similarly inexperienced to know that it’s a tiny plastic balance that levels off at 2 grams. The instructions are also unclear on the use of Bluetooth. I couldn’t understand why the Bluetooth light (LED) wasn’t lighting but the Bluetooth doesn’t work until the phono preamp is switched on. This isn’t mentioned in the instructions so, again, may be of use to someone.Listening to vinyl has been a revelation. Lack of space means that it’s difficult to position the turntable close to my amp (even though it’s a NAD D3020, which takes up little room) and speakers and so I’ve been playing it using the turntable and amp Bluetooth functions. Even so, I’m happy with the sound quality. I’ve played a variety of old L.P.’s and they’ve sounded so good that sometimes I’ve forgotten what I was listening to and looked at my CD player for a track number. I have tried it using the phono connection and it was probably better quality but it’s a bit hard to be sure without switching from one connection to another. And did I mention that it comes with some good quality Cambridge Audio phono leads? For some reason, I haven’t listened to any classical or jazz albums or very old pop/rock 45s yet. I’ve been concentrating on albums that I haven’t got on CD or as downloads but I’m sure it won’t disappoint. The turntable is a nice solid build and I’m hoping to use it for years to come. It’s got me listening to more music again and I recommend it for functionality and versatility. I can’t compare it to other models but is sounds really good to my untrained ears.I recommend.
There was nothing wrong with the NAD turntable which I bought from Richer Sounds at least 20 years ago but I justified replacing it so that I can listen to my vinyl through Bluetooth headphones. RRP £849 but I got one of the last in stock at less than half that amount which is what I call a bargain (especially with free next-day delivery). Not as straightforward to set up as claimed (likely to be my fault, the old Yamaha amp also purchased from RS 20+ years ago has a lot of inputs and I had to fight my way through yards of cables and plugs) but once set up I have had a listen to a variety of music both through speakers and Sony headphones.I am astonished by how much more detail is revealed in the sound as compared with the NAD and look forward to experimenting ... Not yet convinced that the headphones provide a better experience than streaming direct to them would, but for those albums not so easily accessed on Amazon Music it is the best way to listen loud when others would rather I did not.
I've had my existing turntable for about 40plus years and it was just beginning to show signs of it's age. When I saw the email from Richer Sounds re the Cambridge and the price, it was a very natural purchase to make. I am very pleased I did, it works faultlessly, I upgraded the stylus and what a wonderful difference to my records. I can now have Oscar Peterson playing piano in the room I've set aside for listening - at least that is what it sounds like. You can't go wrong. The service from Richer Sounds at Brighton was second to non. I thought I'd messed it up when setting it up, but they were very patient and sorted me out, for which I was very grateful.
