Cambridge Audio Duo Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Phono Preamp

$520.00

(207 reviews)

The duo seems to exude a touch of performance. It is a solid, lightweight piece of technology that simply looks great. A rich and rewarding listening experience that I can't tear myself away from. There are only a few other options that can match this kind of listening experience, which, to put it mildly, is quite astonishing.

I purchased this because there are a number of different ways in which I can use it. As a headphone amplifier I think it delivers very good sound, although I do not possess particularly expensive headphones. However, where the Audio Duo really scored in my view is, as was suggested in the advertising, when instead of using the phono socket of my (Marantz, two-channel) amplifier I instead used the Cambridge phono section and an auxiliary input (line input). The difference in sound was - to my ear - equivalent to a cartridge upgrade. The image definition was improved, and the sound was 'tighter', albeit not compromised in any way. I also use a Pro-Ject RCM on my LPs and the Hi-Fi news reference LP for cartridge setup: all my vinyl dates from the 1970s and early 1980s.) Although I use only moving magnet cartridges with my two (Dual) turntables, the Audio Duo additionally gives me the option of upgrading to moving coil should I wish to. Finally, my excellent Denon 5-channel amplifier does not have a phono input, so I could if I choose use the Audio Duo to connect a turntable to this. Overall I would recommend the Cambridge Audio Duo as a thoroughly worthwhile, versatile product which gives excellent results.

Simply, in my system and with my ears, this is a better phono pre-amp than the generally accepted class leader (Rega). It seems cleaner and clearer through the midband and has a more natural balance across the frequency spectrum. Most tellingly, I currently have both and it is the Duo that I choose to use. My only gripe is that I would have preferred just a little more gain but this is common to most phono pre-amps I have used. I am sure this is very system and particularly cartridge dependant - Nagaoka MP300 in my case.I haven't used the moving coil input so cannot comment on that. The headphone output is good and I would be quite happy to use it but I rarely use 'phones. So: an excellent well balanced sounding pre-amp that feels well built. The device is beautifully engineered and has a solid feel to it. I would advice fairly sensitive headphones however as i sensed the Duo was struggling to drive my ZMF Autere cans. Switching to a pair of Oppo headphones the Duo came into its own reliching the easier load to drive. Smooth yet detailed. Clear detailed sound with very low noise floor!

I was looking for a fairly affordable phono stage that still gives great results. And all the internet hype led me to the Schiit Mani. A solid perfomer for sure, but plagued by constant issues of RFI, constant hum/ buzz and all of that with a high quality linear power supply...My turntable doesn't provide a ground point as its internally grounded, that might have played some part in the whole experience as I can't connect a ground wire from the tt to the phono preamp. So I kept looking for a new phono preamp, something that still has the nice level of detail and dynamics of the Schiit Mani but is also quiet until I drop the needle on the record. And sure enough the Cambirdge Audio Duo is it, and then some! And sure enough the Cambirdge Audio Duo is it, and then some! I was hesitant to go for this model as there's not many reviews on the web, but it was the right choice. Bass is as punchy and deep as you'd want it to be, very detailed and quick. Mid-range has plenty of air, with precise instrument separation and placement. The highs are energetic but not fatiguing and the whole sound is very dynamic, overall amazing. At first I wasn't sure on its sound versus the Schiit Mani as it seemed a bit laid back, too mellow. Few weeks of breaking it in and now its just as enjoyable as the Mani if not more! This is a truly audiophile designed equipment, it doesn't add any coloration to your music, just lets it sound its best. The best thing about it... noise floor is incredibly low! Only the slightest buzz at the volume levels I will go deaf at and only if I put my ear right against the speaker, otherwise black silence until the record starts. An extra bonus is that it supports MC cartridges if I ever upgrade, oh yes and a very decent headphone amplifier! Highly recommended phono stage!

As usual I received the package in perfect condition and a day early so shipping was great! The instructions were easy to understand and connection was easy. On testing I could tell right away that the sound was clearer and a lot more detailed than the turntables built in preamp and the built in is not a bad one so that tells me this thing is top notch high quality for it's price point. The sound was excellent. For me the headphone portion of the preamp works great. It drove the headphones I tested it with louder than I plan on listening to it with and did so with clarity. That being said I will more than likely use the headphone feature for monitoring when I'm recording records to CD blanks. In the audiophile high fidelity world these are small beans, entry level gear but works better than good enough for me and my current goals.

Excellent Phono preamp

So the phono input for my HarmonKardon receiver is no slouch, one of the best built in preamps available, but i always felt that the highs were muddy on my Sure N97xe and the my AT 440MLA was just a little grating. The only Cart i felt was great was my Denon DL110. Let me just say that the difference was immediately apparent from the first needle drop. I started with my AT 440MLA, since i've read its sensitive to preamp loading and capacitance, and i was forced to run threw an RCA extender before. The first thing i noted was the increase in base response, nice clean tight base that was much more upfront than before. but the most important thing was the grating grating nature of the 440Mla was gone just a clarity that i hadn't heard before. on to the Sure N97xe, the ... MoreSo the phono input for my HarmonKardon receiver is no slouch, one of the best built in preamps available, but i always felt that the highs were muddy on my Sure N97xe and the my AT 440MLA was just a little grating. I bought this to use Headphones on my Turntable. I'm using Denon High Output MC DL-110 and Sennheiser HD 660s2 with the Duo. First i pluged in on the MM like it should be and it was the best Sound i ever listen to. Then i tryed the HO MC on the MC in and the Sound is even better and more detailed. No Problem at all. I dont know why because i have absolutely no Idea what im doing. It sound great and im very happy to have this little pre/headphone amp.

Outstanding piece of kit has transformed my sound
2 January 2024

I've just added a Cambridge audio duo phono preamp to my setup and it's transformed my vinyl sound. I didn't need a preamp as my project deck has one built in but I got the duo as it has a headphone socket which means I can now plug in my Bluetooth streamer and listen on headphones while my better half is watching tv! Up until this I could only listen to vinyl while the TV was off or she was out! It's not just a preamp though it actively cleans up the sound and reduces rumble and pops and scratches. Outstanding piece of kit for serious vinyl listeners! Got mine in the black Friday sales ÂŁ100 knocked off so very happy!

Quality Piece of Kit. Lovely Sound and Good Value

After narrowing my search down to this item and the also highly rated Rega Fono MM MK5, I bought both and listened to them back to back. To my ears there wasn’t much in it however the Cambridge Audio Duo sounded cleaner, warmer and overall just better than the Rega Fono.Another deciding factor was the look and feel of both items. To me the Rega looked and felt almost as if it was produced on a 3D printer and didn’t look or feel like a quality item. The Cambridge on the other hand looks and feels so much better than the Rega.Of the two and probably any other phono box around the same price, I can highly recommend the Cambridge Audio Duo. It’s even better value if you can buy it using the VIP member discount like I did. What a fantastic phono stage!

I had recently upgraded from a CXA60 to a CXA80 and bought the CXNv2 (connected with XLR cables). I have a Project Debut Carbon II turntable and this was hooked up to the Cambridge Audio 651P. It was a very good sound coming through the turntable and amp. However, I decided to look at an upgrade and spoke to Tech Support at Cambridge Audio and decided to bite the bullet and buy the Duo phono stage. The headphone socket and ability to listen with an amp built into the Duo was the deciding factor. It looks and feels very solid and aesthetically is very pleasing. Very easy to set up and had it working within minutes. I compared the sound between the 651P and Duo back to back, starting with The Blue Nile "Tinsel Town in The Rain". The sound stage and separation was markedly better with the Duo and the sound was so clear and there were little accents that came through far clearer.I then put on Kraftwerk "Autobahn" and the punch and bass was fantastic. This album is 44 years old - I bought it in 1974 - so it's had a fair bit of use. What I did notice (quite markedly) was that some of the background noise from the album (clicks etc.) were much reduced with the Duo. I decided to try Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" which was bought in 1973, followed by David Bowie "Ziggy Stardust" bought in 1972; both of these vinyls have had literally hundreds of hours of play ranging from 1970's portable type record players right through the range of different turntables to my current Debut Carbon II.In each case the vinyl sounded much clearer and the noise levels were much lower.I then tried the headphones through the Duo amp and the sound was superb. I tried using Bowers & Wilkins P7 and PX headphones - both sonically great headphones. I was very pleased with the performance. My TV runs through the CXNv2 and the CXA80, but now I can listen to music while others are watching TV!Overall this is shaping up to be a great buy and will only sound better as it's run in. Would I recommend it? Most definitely!
