This is easily one of the most overlooked and essential additions to anyone’s load-out. The insulation around the bladder is very effective, keeping the water cold for literally days. I purchased a MOLLE pouch for my plate carrier from TAG(tactical assault gear) and my camelback now sits on the back of my plate carrier! Even completely full the hydration system is practically weightless! If you’re considering it, buy it. Do yourself a favor and make sure you’re prepared for when SHTF! Hydrate or die !P.s. it may be difficult to distinguish what is what on my black OCP setup, but it’s there

Are you someone who doesn't wash their outerwear frequently? Do you like ice building up on your jacket, all the way down to your skis or snowboard? Buddy, this product it for you! Constantly drips out the end of the hose. These used to have a valve to shut them off between the hose and the bite valve. Clearly they got rid of that as a cost cutting measure. My wife prefers the bird-branded hydration packs, I bought this out of misguided brand loyalty. Once again, my wife is right.

My first Stoaway was about 20 years old and it was very difficult to remove the bladder from the insulated carrier. This latest design is excellent. The bladder can be easily removed for cleaning via a large zipper. Also, the detachment of the tube from the bladder can be done without removing the bladder from the carrier, via another zipper.I slide the carrier into any one of my various backpacks, and the insulated cover provides extra protection and rigidity for the bladder. Sometimes I use the top strap (where the tube comes out) to carabiner-clip to a point high in my pack. This keeps the Stoaway high up in my pack, so the tube can be threaded out the pack, over my shoulder, to hang down in front of me. If the tube were about 6" longer, it would be helpful, though.

Recently used this on a trip to Lake Tahoe. Filled it with water and ice for an all day hike. Each sip (that wasn’t sitting in the hose for too long) was super cold! Even the water that sat in the hose wasn’t nearly as hot as it could’ve been. One downside: if you fill it with super cold water, it will condensate like crazy and sweat so much that you’ll think it’s leaking (it’s not). Just a warning of your pack doesn’t have a drain port at the bottom. I needed up soaking my extra clothes at the bottom of my bag.Still, a damp lower back is worth it to have ice cold water on a hot summer day!
I purchased a "mil-spec" Crux bladder, which sprung a leak, so while waiting for CamelBak to dispatch a warranty replacement, I used some gift cards to purchase the StoAway, as we were heading to Glacier National Park and had lots of hikes planned.I wanted something insulated, to keep our water cold. I purchased a Maxpedition backpack with a compartment specifically for hydration packs, so right off the bat, the insulated sleeve the StoAway comes with did not fit in the backpack, so I ended up just using the bladder and insulated drink tube. This setup worked well for our needs.I would definitely recommend this and would purchase again.
I have actually not had a chance to use it yet . But I wish I were able to buy a lighter color tube insulation sleeve . From past experience with my previous model it had a black sleeve insulation tube & still attracted heat & made the water in the tube heat up . I see some of the other models come with a different color insulation sleeve but it does not look like you can purchase one in the spare parts section of the website.
Picked this up for a week-long family trip to Disney World. Traveled in mid-July with heat indexes of 105* I placed it inside my backpack. There was almost zero condensation but still had ice after when it was time to refill 5 hours later. The detachable hose made it super easy to remove from the insulating sleeve when refilling and cleaning each night. My son used my old Omega 100oz system in a MaxGear Mule. His back was soaking wet from condensation before getting through the park gates, the water was warm in less than 2 hours, and refilling and cleaning were much more complicated than my new Crux reservoir. I can't express how happy I was with the performance.
The only reason I give this 4 stars is because in the photos is clearly shows that there is a valve where you can control when water comes out or not. Mine did not come with one. I am a Wildland firefighter and would walk around with all of the water dripping out onto my shirt. I had to attach it to a carabiner and higher up on my pack to prevent gravity pushing the water out of my pack. Other than that it is an awesome pack and the insulation definitely keeps your water cold. Just wish it would have come with what it promised.
I recently took a hiking trip to the Black Hills and I am SO glad I had this. I used all 3L of water almost every day. I was initially pretty upset because I had a terrible leak that got my whole bag wet, but it turned out I just didn't have the cap on tight. Once I fixed my own error it didn't leak a drop. And the water stayed pretty cold, too! It was super refreshing to take a much needed drink and actually get cold water. This thing fit right in my backpack, too. Very convenient. I highly recommend this!
My first experience with Camelbak was basic training and I've loved their products ever since. I had to return my Army Camelbak about a year ago when I got out, otherwise I'd still be rocking that one. Bought the Stoaway with the intention of stuffing it in the Osprey Atmos 65 and running the hose through it. The biggest gripe I have is the hose would kink - I think this is mostly a flaw of the tight hydration port on the backpack than it is on the Stoaway, but it was a bit of a headache so I figure it's worth mentioning. Beyond that, it did everything you'd expect a Camelbak to do and it did it excellently. Held the full 3L of water, didn't leak a drop, and aside from the times where the hose would get kinked, very easy to get as much water as I wanted. The insulation worked pretty well as far as I could tell, though I like my water at like 50-60 degrees so I can't speak to its ability to keep water ice cold.
