The 2042B002 Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which allows the user to take pictures four stops slower than otherwise possible. This is a feature that can only be found in the Canon EFS Zoom Lens, f/3.5-5.6 IS. The Canon image stabilizer lens utilizes an aspherical lens to correct aberrations that may occur while taking photographs. The Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens creates a higher-quality zoom area. Due to a built-in circular aperture, backgrounds not in focus are textured nicely. The 2042B002 Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens retains its compact nature even though it uses more advanced technology than similar models. It is the lens to use when a slow-time shutter is required for taking photographs. The Canon Image Stabilizer Lens was created to fulfill the needs of photographers who require a unit that is lightweight and can still take quality pictures. It is suitable for use by both amateur and professional photographers.

Best kit lens yet from Canon

Having used previous versions of Canon's 18-55mm kit lens I was sceptical of the reported improvements. The lens still has a plastic mount, but it does feel more substantial than the previous releases. Optically it is quite a bit better, especially central area sharpness. The internal optical arrangement is all new - not just an upgrade. The iris design is also new and better than before. The STM focussing system is quicker as there is less hunting than with the previous design, and it quite often locks on at the first attempt. Manual focussing override is always available. Let it auto focus, and with the focus locked, manually fine adjust it and then take the picture. Full manual is a bit trickier. The focus ring is larger than before and therefore much easier to use. The front element does not rotate when focussing, so petal lens hoods and graduated filters can be used. Overall this is a step up from the previous kit lenses and it is probably now the best kit lens available.

It does a good job for the price and is reasonably quick to focus accurately, being quite reliable over long periods of use. Too many reviewers criticize this lens for what it is not - and that is misplaced because it does not purport to be something it is not. For example: It is NOT a macro lens. It is NOT not a super wide or long telephoto lens. It is NOT a professional lens. It shoots wide enough you do not have to run too far back to capture a whole church, and it tele-zooms just enough to capture most architectural details, such as those fascinating gargoyles up high on the front of the church. A good, all purpose, general lens. If you need a pro level lens, or wider or longer range, then buy another lens, but keep this in your lens bag for general, all around daily use. I know it sounds buff and macho to dismiss it as the cheap kit lens - but it really does a good job - and while it is fairly inexpensive to make and include in the package, Canon really does not include a junk lens with the kit - just a general purpose, good (not highest) quality lens for most folks. If you need better, buy better. Otherwise, this is a wonderful bargain - especially if you buy one used or in a white box removed from kit for a discount. Just another tool in the box for general use - nothing wrong with that. Just MY take. JR

Great cheap lens, maybe could be wider.

This basic lens is basically good. I do wonder why this third gen lens still starts at 18mm; That's 29mm on Canon EF-S. 17mm would have been a true 28mm, actually slightly wider (27mm). The competition does fine at a 1.5 crop, Canon should make this lens a little wider. Not much more too say, it does have noticeable chromatic aberrations, but this is easily corrected. STM means it focuses silently, it'll catch you out as an unusual experience, focusing silently, and it takes a while to get used to.

Great for beginners

I’m personally pretty attached to this lens as it’s my first lens I’ve ever had. As most others have said, I received it in a beginner level kit and I think for beginners, it’s a very versatile lens. The focal length range is good for a number of different subjects from people to landscapes. Of course don’t expect professional level quality from this lens, but we all have to start somewhere. Zoom lenses are also nifty, though they tend to sacrifice clarity for this feature. It is a little noisy when focusing and I have trouble shooting in semi-dark areas like neon-lit rooms or dusky beaches. While nice and versatile, it is pretty average. Punches above its price-point.

I had not been familiar with this lens prior to this purchase. I am more familiar with higher end Canon lenses, including their L line. Given my experience, I was very happy with this lens on Canon Rebel camera bodies. The quality and build, vis-a-vis the price point, is very good. And is perfect for either average users or new/young photographers. Enjoy the images for what they are, as opposed to what they are not (like super sharp or saturated with color), and it will serve you well. Plus in this day and age, you can add a bit of sharpening and saturation in post and most users will never know the difference. And hence never have reason to spend hundreds more.

Good Points: Great standard lens.Improvement Points: This Lens is described as a USM lens. It is not, Cannon decided to call all the older style lenses "USM", like this one, for marketing reasons. Naughty Cannon. This has the standard "Micro motor" AF control.

Typically I'm not a huge fan of 18-55 kit lenses, as they don't have the best the image quality, and generally have a limited zoom range with no benefits besides price. However, with the IS in this lens, pretty good autofocus, and decently sharp image quality, it's hard to not to recommend this lens. I wish the manual focus ring was easier to use, but overall it is a good deal for the price.

Soft and lifeless focus with extensive field curvature
27 November 2022

Field curvature is observed when objects in the center of the field are in focus and objects at the same distance near the edge of the field are noticeably out of focus. In essence, the lens does not produce a flat focal plane -- instead, it renders a hemispherical focus field. The effect is most obvious in this 18-55 mmm lens at zoom angles of 18-30mm, and no amount of stopping down will keep reasonable compositions in focus throughout the image frame. This may not matter to those who prefer blurry peripheries -- but any sort of outdoor landscape photo (a.k.a., your typical vacation image) will be rendered with appallingly blurry corners -- especially if you let the camera sort this out with autofocus. In fact, most inexpensive wider-angle zooms have this ... MoreField curvature is observed when objects in the center of the field are in focus and objects at the same distance near the edge of the field are noticeably out of focus. The word 'lifeless' comes to mind -- not a technical term -- but accurate all the same. As a result, there is no combination of zoom setting and f-stop that can produce anything resembling an 'SLR' class photo. The now-discontinued Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 is much better all around -- but it is a beast. If you can find one and don't mind the weight of a brick hanging from your shoulder -- it's a workable solution. If you only need a lens for Zoom meetings or 720p streaming video -- the 18-55 mm is probably good enough. But if you want photos that are worth showing on a 4k screen -- this is not a lens I can recommend.

Canons mid-range zoom lens which has a reasonable price. But if youre sickn tired of deterioration of the image while zooming, perhaps you buy some better model. However, this is a great lens for portraits, statues with bokey skies, flowers etc...kinda like a semi macro lens. If you wanna boost that macro feature, attach one extension tube ring (that thinnest one) between the lens and the camera and youre all set for decent macros! This lens works brilliantly with one tube, like 12 or 13mm. First off, I understand my review is biased because I bought this used for around $60 USD with the intention of hacking it. I made it compatible with standard EF mount so that I could use with an EF to M43 speedbooster on a panasonic GH4. There are two things I hoped to gain from this. First, I wanted a lens for M43 format that had a good range around 16-18mm (32-36 equivalent). Second, I wanted lens stabilization because the GH4 has no stabilization. For the money, this beats purchasing the nearly $1000 17.5mm Voigtlander Nokton for M43 (which i was seriously considering). Again, my review isn't helpful for all, but I love this thing on my GH4 now.
