The CN-E 35mm t1.5 L F Cine Prime is my first introduction to Cine Lenses. So take that fwiw. For me it has become an invaluable tool as it sits on my A camera (C100 Mki) with follow focus. Typically I use this lens as A cam for all my interviews - I love the field of view for 35mm so I can sit close enough to interviewees and have a nice medium while using my C100 Mkii with an L zoom for off axis Close Ups (70-200 or 24-105). For what I do (docs and corporate video and even some scenario based work) I could prob get a similiar look for the output with a 35mm L prime but wouldn't have the convenience with the follow focus ring, the de-clicked aperture ring, nor would I have the 11 iris blades - (for you bokeh lovers it's pretty DEEE licious--and who doesn't love ... MoreThe CN-E 35mm t1.5 L F Cine Prime is my first introduction to Cine Lenses. The other attributes add up nicely as well: Built like a tank, very little focus breathing, and no noticeable distortions nor chromatic aberrations... I am in the sweet spot of the lens at all times with the super 35 sensor but have popped it on my 5d Mkiii and it looks pretty spectacular at Full Frame as well. I think the main sell for me is it's a lens that I will be using long term. As I upgrade/rent cameras it will be with me as long as I can use EF mounts. Other things to consider: there is a bit of yellow to this lens (I've noticed with matching other lenses - to my eyes this is a pleasing cinema look but can easily be dialed out with some very basic CC if you want to) - it also has a really nice contrasty image - again going for the cinema look. If you shoot in Wide DR on the C100 as do I you get an even better image right out of the gate (I still bill in grading time for my edits but the contrast I don't touch as much for things shot with this lens) ..And as advertised it's razor sharp... even wide open, so if you are shooting doc-style in low light settings it really shines. It is also much heavier than a still lens - so you need to have a great tripod/rig and strength if you are going to shoot with it. (again it works nicely in my setup since I have two closely matched cameras - this one stays put in a studio style setup (with some minimal HH work) while my B camera is extremely light and I can do endurance run and gun style shooting when I need to. Bottom line - what you are paying for is convenience, versatility and a bit of future proofing (I hope) for shooting video. If you can just barely afford this I'd check first that you have a solid gear foundation (tripod, lights, mics) first and stick with still lenses until than. If you an afford it I doubt you'll be disappointed Hopefully this review helps. Happy shooting!

Great addition to Canon's Cine Prime Set

One the most-used lenses on a super 35mm sensor, the 35mm CN-E from canon has been long in coming. I think it was worth the wait. This lens ads the mechanics and housing of a true cinema lens, and improves noticeably in terms of contrast, sharpness and chromatic aberration compared it's still-camera-L-series cousin. Contrast is excellent wide open, and corner sharpness is exceptional throughout the range. The small amount of CA is largely limited to the extreme corners on a full frame camera, and is essentially negligible on super35 or other cropped sensors. I only wish the 50mm was this good.

This lens is a beast! Shooting wide open is tack sharp, the size is huge - and night shots are unlike anything Ive ever seen. We shot with it on a C100 Mk II, C300 Mk II, and RED Dragon and when comparing the footage it was hard to tell the difference from the 100 vs 300. This lens will make your camera shine, especially if its a Canon Cinema series. That and on-set our clients have noticed it and are very impressed. This will elevate your productions to another level.

Think Canon cinema lenses are hype? Think again. This lens is a game changer. I have the 50mm L series f1.2 and this lens blows it away in sharpness, accuracy of focus and several other areas. Best purchase I've made for a while.

Shoot for the stars!!

This lens is still my top choice for a standard wide angle lens for astrophotography. It has very low levels of aberration, a versatile field of view, excellent sharpness at large apertures, and good overall build quality for the price point. Its capable of making some of the cleanest wide field landscape astrophotos without the use of any kind of special equipment like a tracking mount.

So sweet!

This is my prime go-to lens on my Canon C-300. On the set of my short film, Jupiter's Legacy, my DP and I came back to this lens again and again. Coupled with the C-300's low light capabilities, the 1.5 allowed me to shoot primarily in lovely candlelight and torchlight. We successfully lit one scene with a single 15 watt Christmas Tree bulb. This lens is tack sharp and has great contrast. I love it. The first AC loved working with the smooth focus mechanism.

The Standard

I am in production now, using this lens and it's amazing, solid, sharp, yet naturally soft. I'm using it with the EOS C300 Mark II so in combination with the camera, it produces such a beautiful aesthetic straight out of the box. The lens is so well crafted. No breathing at all. It has a great weight to it. My first Canon Cine Prime Lens purchase and thus far, am totally satisfied. I will definitely be investing in more. The 35mm is a great choice for a first purchase as you can use this prime for so many applications. You could shoot an entire feature with just a 35mm if need be. I don't scoff at the price either. Artist's tools do cost. I'm a firm believer that you truly do get what you pay for.

This Lens is Sharp and Worth Every Penny
4 September 2014

My video production is mainly for television commercials. I've owned other compact prime lenses before and when I had the opportunity to work with the Canon CN-E line, I immediately got more attention and compliments from my clients. The more I work with this line of lenses the more business I tend to get, which is why I chose to invest. To my surprise, this lens is even sharper than the 50mm and 85mm which I'd worked with in the past...I am impressed and very happy about my purchase.

[Rewarded Review] Great lens
1 August 2020

I have always enjoyed wide angle lenses. I like the perspective and taking them out for landscapes, city scapes, even interiors and capturing the whole area on full format. This lens does that very well. Highly recommend this, esp with the C500 mk 2. Enjoy it.

[Rewarded Review] Should have bought these years ago

When I moved over into the Canon Cinema camera line, due to costs, I decided to go with the Rokinon cinema lenses. Initially, I thought they worked great and it was a definite upgrade from my previous setup. However after shooting with these lenses I can't even believe the difference. The color and clarity are unmatched – I even rented other lenses to compare (Zeiss, Xeen) and IMHO these Canon lenses blew them all away. They make skin tones just come to life and are sharp but not overly harsh. Worth every penny!
