Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L Is II USM Lens
The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS II USM is a powerful member of the professional L series and is perfectly suited for passionate sports and nature photographers. As the successor to the very popular EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM, the model impresses with a number of interesting improvements in terms of image quality and ease of use. It sets different standards in the market segment of compact supertelezoom lenses. The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM is an Lseries supertele with optical image stabilizer (IS). Lenses made of fluorite and SuperUD glass ensure the extensive elimination of distortion and aberrations. Internal focusing with sliding elements (floating system) ensures that superior image sharpness is maintained throughout the AF working range. The lens can be used with the EF 1.4x II and EF 2x II extenders. The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM features a threestop image stabilizer (IS), making it the ideal lens for handheld shooting. Up to three stops slower shutter speeds than normally possible can be used with it, without increasing the risk of camera shake. Movement in a certain direction is seen by the lens as panning, and the image stabilizer automatically turns off for that direction of movement. A ringshaped ultrasonic motor ensures very fast and extremely quiet focusing. Thanks to excellent holding torque, inaccuracies are avoided. In addition, manual focusing is possible at any time without switching. This means that the focus can be adjusted without having to switch off the AF function. High contrast, low distortion and consistent resolution from the center of the image to the edge are evident throughout the zoom range. A circular aperture, which is electromagnetically controlled, softens and evens out the background and makes the foreground subject stand out more against the attractive background blur.

I rented this lens to shoot an all day series of kid's baseball games. I have a 70-200, but wanted a bit more reach on my 5D Mkiii. This lens was perfect for that. Amazingly sharp also. I almost bought the lens after having used it for that day. I couldn't quite justify the expense at this time, but if I get more paying work of this same type, I definitely will. If the range of the lens is what you are looking for, I don't think you need to look any further than this lens. As long as you're not shooting in super dark conditions, this lens is brilliant. I probably wouldn't choose to use it indoors unless it was very well lit, but otherwise there isn't anything I could say in the negative category about it. It's basically the same weight as the Canon 70-200, so it's not light, but it's not a monster. It's a great rental value too. And, of course, the lensrentals service is EXCELLENT. Frankly, easier than buying a lens from some places. I very much appreciated the ease of getting this gear from them for this job. I was squeezed on time and they had this lens to me overnight without any issue. Many thanks!

Prior to buying this lens I had used the Tamron 150-600 G2. It worked ok, but this lens is in a whole different league. Where the Tamron was inaccurate and slowish to focus, generally soft, with jumpy IS, and prone to wicked CA, this lens is none of those things. Even strapped to an 80D with a 1.4X TC, it still produces very sharp images and snaps to focus so long as you're relatively close to begin with. It's very close minimum focusing distance makes it excellent for shooting larger insects like butterflies and dragonflies. Nothing else touches it for the price. I truly love what this lens lets me capture.

I could spend the entire day talking about the Canon 100-400 lens, come on the Lens is fabulous! I want to tell the world about the Excellent, and I do mean Excellent Website, Products, ease of ordering, and spot on delivery Lens rental provides. I was blown away the first time I used them and thought, must have been a fluke, the second time left me more impressed then the first time and I decided on keeping the Lens, it was a great lens at a great price, and that process went as smooth as silk. I think Lensrental truly needs to be recognized as a company that does exactly what they say they can do and do it in the most professional manner possible. This company can count on me being an unpaid advertisement for them because I believe in what they provide that much. ... MoreI could spend the entire day talking about the Canon 100-400 lens, come on the Lens is fabulous! For a trip to Alaska, I wanted to get closer pictures of bears and moose without actually getting closer to them. After some research, I found that the Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II was a great option. Since I can't afford to buy that lens, renting was the next best choice.I've rented from Lensrentals in the past and have always had a great experience. The quality of the equipment has always been like new, the lens arrived with plenty of time before leaving for my trip, they make returning the lens a breeze, and the cost is a FRACTION of buying one of those bad boys for myself. Totally worth it.I will say the lens was a bit heavy to carry on an 8-mile hike...4 straight up and 4 back down...on a mountain. That being said, for the quality, range, and crispness of the images, again...worth it.I have nothing but good things to say about Lensrentals and I've said them a lot...and to many people. I will most definitely use them again on my next big adventure.
I needed a versatile lens for a Tanzanian photo safari, but after my nearby lens rental source couldn't provide one for the dates needed, I went to trusty Google and found Lensrentals. I was able to get the lens I needed fast and conveniently and at a great rental price. The packaging was outstanding and I felt confident that the lens was ready to use and that returning would be just as secure. This particular lens was absolutely PERFECT for the safari and my shots were the envy of many others in our group. I was able to reach out and capture outstanding shots at high speed with ultra-sharp clarity and excellent color. For this once-in-a-lifetime trip Lensrental saved the day and helped make my memories vivid, up close, and awesome!
I took this lens on a trip to Antarctica, and it let me capture really excellent shots of the wildlife. The focus was so crisp, it far exceeded anything I had shot with other lenses.I am an experienced amateur photographer, and take most of my photos while traveling. I used this lens on a Canon 80D and was extremely happy with it. (For the Antarctica trip, I also used an older camera body and an 18-55 kit lens to capture wider scenery shots)The only downside to the lens is the weight. I shot hand-held for the entire trip, partly because I didn't want to lug a tripod around, but mostly because I was capturing birds in flight, whales surfacing, etc, as well as shooting from a boat on rocky seas. It's much heavier than the more basic Canon lenses, and took some ... MoreI took this lens on a trip to Antarctica, and it let me capture really excellent shots of the wildlife. I will definitely rent this lens again for future wildlife-based travels.
This is a sharp lens, especially at f/8 its sweet spot. It is considerably sharper across all levels compared to the Tamron 150-600mm. The weights are about the same. It has considerably less chromatic aberration than the Canon 75-300mm whether the cheaper stm or the USM IS version. This is great when shooting great white egrets in the sunlight. It is sharper than the old glass canon 70-200mm with an old 1x teleconverter. The autofocus is not as good as the canon 75-300mm even if you use the setting so that it does not have to use the full range. Consider fine-tuning your focus tracking and lock settings to be less sensitive when there is a busy background or with birds in flight to help avoid back or front focusing. But when it does not back or front focus or you are spot-on with manual zone focusing the results are spectacular for wildlife including hummingbirds, ospreys, cat birds, wax wings, jays, squirrels, deer, pelicans... The IS works well on all three settings 1-3.
Shot an AKC FastCat for 2 days. Images are selling. I used that lens on my Canon 1DX Mark II body. I had rented the Canon EOS R7 to use but the two days I gave myself to learn the R7 camera for what I needed was not enough, so I put the lens on my trusty known Canon 1DX Mark II and shot away. The lens is good..it was a cloudy day so I had to raise ISO but images are sharp. Had to find focus but I blame that as much on the start and a dip on the starting line, but once I got focus it was great. Good lens and will consider buying it as best for the length that Canon offers in a price range I can afford. Customer service was amazing !
Hi All. I took the EF 100-400mm out for the first time this past weekend to a nature preserve. I was absolutely blown away by the sharpness of this lens! I own a 90D and an R5 and I chose this lens so I could use it on either body. I was a bit nervous about how well the lens would perform on the R5 with the EF to RF adapter, but I can say that the performance was flawless. The lens is relatively heavy, but very manageable. On that note, I'm really impressed with the solid construction of this lens. Also, it was a nice, sunny day and I was able to shoot hand-held with great results. Here's my humble two-cents on this lens. It's less expensive than the RF 100-500 and it's been available for quite a while now (so it has several years of testing in the field). It's ... MoreHi All. While at old faithful in Yellowstone park, I met a lady that had a nice camera lens. Before I plunked down $$$$ I wanted to see what a real person thought. She told me I could rent one and try it before I buy it! Never heard of this. She recommended Lensrentals. While waiting on old faithful to do its thing, I quickly placed an order. Shipped over night to the airbnb I was staying at. Being a new customer, Lensrentals contacted me to verify my account and address, to which I thought was very cool. Received the lens the next day and fell in love. The lens, case, packaging where perfect. The tape (you’ll see when you get it) was the best. Kudos to marketing on that one. I used the lens a week, returned it with the enclosed tape and shipping label. Simple! Convenient! ... MoreWhile at old faithful in Yellowstone park, I met a lady that had a nice camera lens.
