Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L Is II USM Lens
The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS II USM is a powerful member of the professional L series and is perfectly suited for passionate sports and nature photographers. As the successor to the very popular EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM, the model impresses with a number of interesting improvements in terms of image quality and ease of use. It sets different standards in the market segment of compact supertelezoom lenses. The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM is an Lseries supertele with optical image stabilizer (IS). Lenses made of fluorite and SuperUD glass ensure the extensive elimination of distortion and aberrations. Internal focusing with sliding elements (floating system) ensures that superior image sharpness is maintained throughout the AF working range. The lens can be used with the EF 1.4x II and EF 2x II extenders. The EF 100400mm f/4.55.6L IS USM features a threestop image stabilizer (IS), making it the ideal lens for handheld shooting. Up to three stops slower shutter speeds than normally possible can be used with it, without increasing the risk of camera shake. Movement in a certain direction is seen by the lens as panning, and the image stabilizer automatically turns off for that direction of movement. A ringshaped ultrasonic motor ensures very fast and extremely quiet focusing. Thanks to excellent holding torque, inaccuracies are avoided. In addition, manual focusing is possible at any time without switching. This means that the focus can be adjusted without having to switch off the AF function. High contrast, low distortion and consistent resolution from the center of the image to the edge are evident throughout the zoom range. A circular aperture, which is electromagnetically controlled, softens and evens out the background and makes the foreground subject stand out more against the attractive background blur.

I rented this lens to shoot an all day series of kid's baseball games. I have a 70-200, but wanted a bit more reach on my 5D Mkiii. This lens was perfect for that. Amazingly sharp also. I almost bought the lens after having used it for that day. I couldn't quite justify the expense at this time, but if I get more paying work of this same type, I definitely will. If the range of the lens is what you are looking for, I don't think you need to look any further than this lens. As long as you're not shooting in super dark conditions, this lens is brilliant. I probably wouldn't choose to use it indoors unless it was very well lit, but otherwise there isn't anything I could say in the negative category about it. It's basically the same weight as the Canon 70-200, so it's not light, but it's not a monster. It's a great rental value too. And, of course, the lensrentals service is EXCELLENT. Frankly, easier than buying a lens from some places. I very much appreciated the ease of getting this gear from them for this job. I was squeezed on time and they had this lens to me overnight without any issue. Many thanks!

What an amazing lens this is! Mounted on a Canon 5D Mark IV. It focuses very fast. I primarily shoot wildlife and boating images with occasional sports photography. In any situation, this lens always performs. For larger distances I added the X2 extender which doubles the range. Howver, autozoom is disabled with the extender. It is pretty heavy and works best with a tripod. Overall this is an incredible lens that not only looks beautiful but performs each and every time. It made me excited to get back into photography.

When Great Blue Heron chicks hatched in a nest on the little island in our lake, I knew I was going to need something more than my trusty Canon 70-200 f/2.8L lens. The distance is just a bit too far for that lens to be useful, even with a 1.4x extender. I decided to rent the Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L to try to get some decent images. Lens arrived on time, was in excellent condition, worked perfectly with my 1.4x extender, and I did get some great images. Though the weather conditions limited shooting opportunities over that 7 day period, I am very happy with the rental experience. I also love that they offered an opportunity to purchase the lens, which I seriously considered. I've owned this lens for over three years and I cannot fault it. I use it on my 90D for sports and distant wildlife photography and on my 6D Mk2 for closer, slower moving wildlife, moon and motorsports photography. On both cameras the quality cannot be faulted. I have a Canon 1.4x teleconverter and when used with the lens it is astonishing how crisp the resulting photos are.I use it with a monopod and when doing bird photography attach it to a gimbal on the monopod. It is so well-balanced and portable. Just a great all round lens.
I LOVE this lens. It has traversed the world with me in my quest to fulfil my bucket list of things I wish to photograph during my lifetime. I would rather leave half my clothes at home than this lens. It is weatherproof, hardwearing, hardworking, super sharp and gives me the best photographs I could want for. I am an avid photographer and if people ask me for my wildlife/bird lens recommendations I only recommend this! Yes, it's a big ticket item, but we only get to visit some places once in our lifetime, so the photographs you take in order to tell your visual story and remember the places you've been to must be the best you can take on the day. My latest trip was to the Kimberleys, WA and I've attached some my bird photos. The Lacepede Island photos were all taken while sitting in a Zodiac, so no tripod/monopod in sight. The eagle was taken, hand held looking high up onto the cliff and the arty wild flower shot shows how versatile this lens is. I really do love it.
I usually shoot landscape and long exposure in medium format but wanted to use my faster 6D Mark II for wildlife during a trip to the Galapagos Islands. I needed more focal length for the trip, so I bought this lens, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. The sharpness of the blue-footed boobies is remarkable, and the sea lions in the surf are perfectly frozen. Fast-moving animals at 400mm can be a challenge to focus, but I was pleased with the autofocus, and I shot handheld. It's a very nice lens. Interestingly, I noticed five other photographers while I was there who were using the same lens.
I took this lens on a trip to Antarctica, and it let me capture really excellent shots of the wildlife. The focus was so crisp, it far exceeded anything I had shot with other lenses.I am an experienced amateur photographer, and take most of my photos while traveling. I used this lens on a Canon 80D and was extremely happy with it. (For the Antarctica trip, I also used an older camera body and an 18-55 kit lens to capture wider scenery shots)The only downside to the lens is the weight. I shot hand-held for the entire trip, partly because I didn't want to lug a tripod around, but mostly because I was capturing birds in flight, whales surfacing, etc, as well as shooting from a boat on rocky seas. I will definitely rent this lens again for future wildlife-based travels.
This lens was purchased as the alternative to an EF 600mm f/4L IS USM used for birds and wildlife. Obviously, the 600mm isn’t suited to walking around, or keeping on hand for opportunistic shots. The build quality is excellent. It is a rugged lens and while it is not light, it is the extensive glass and the metal body adding that weight so there’s real benefit to that cost. While the 400mm maximum and f/5.6 limit at that length can’t match it, the performance of the 100-400mm is more than adequate for the settings and conditions it does fit. I was afraid I would be compromising on IQ but that fear quickly vanished as I found that at any focal length this lens can produce razor sharp, high contrast shots I am happy to call my work. The usability is top notch as ... MoreThis lens was purchased as the alternative to an EF 600mm f/4L IS USM used for birds and wildlife. I was afraid I would be compromising on IQ but that fear quickly vanished as I found that at any focal length this lens can produce razor sharp, high contrast shots I am happy to call my work. The usability is top notch as well. The AF is fast, not quite as fast as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM but close. I rarely have a problem getting good focus, and in time to get the shot. The image stabilization is excellent as well, and with three modes, including one that stabilizes only at the moment of shooting, it doesn’t interfere with getting the shot with dynamic, moving subjects like birds in flight. With the barrel retracted and the hood inverted it presents a surprisingly compact package making it easy to carry and even with the hood in shooting position if it is zoomed to 100mm it can easily be carried on a strap while walking or hiking. The other unexpected bonus with this lens is the exception close focus distance of about 1m (3ft). Because of this, I find myself using this lens for a lot more “normal” photography, including portraiture, candids, and even “telemacro” of flowers, insects, and the like.Overall, this lens should be in the kit of any Canon shooter needing a telephoto lens in this range. The combination of performance, ruggedness, and versatility make it a lens you will find yourself using constantly.
Even though I have moved to the R system, R and R7, and even switched over my wides and primes; I just can't let go of my EF 100-400mm L2. Yes, I have tested and played with the alternatives in the RF, Sigma and Tamron offerings, but this lens is classic, sharp as, even with x1.4 and x2 extenders, the IQ stands up, the focus is fast and accurate, and the tones it captures are sweet. Tried the RF 100-500, nice but not better. Tried the RF 200-800 against the EF 100-400 Lii w x2iii on both bodies, equal IQ and focus. I would love for Canon to really push the tech and beat this classic telephoto, until then I am very happy sticking with what works great already.
This was a difficult decision for me. I wanted a high quality zoom lens but there are several options to choose from and several of them have more reach. After thinking about it I determined my top requirement was sharpness not so much reach as I know I can crop the image and utilize any number of photo editing tools that I have on my computer. After receiving the lens I went out for my first shoot but the results were mixed as a number of shots were not well focused despite having AF and Image Stabilization. After some trouble shooting I realized the camera I was using is somewhat old and needed some adjustments to the AF. Once that was done the auto focus snapped into place and the images are very sharp and sometimes remarkable. This is an excellent lens. B&H is ... MoreThis was a difficult decision for me.
