This was the first macro lens for the EOS system with a focal length of 100mm. There is an AF/M focus switch and a limit switch to keep focus within a certain range. Using a telephoto macro is ideal to allow more light to the subject since you can take the photo from a greater distance than with a 50mm version.

This lens is a medium telephoto lens with a macro feature providing a 1.0x magnification and very good image quality. With eight aperture blades, creative background blur is possible to help make the subject stand out and the lens features a focusing limiter switch which limits the focus range to improve AF speed. The image stabilisation is welcome too although not always needed for macro photography.

While many people tend to focus manually and on a tripod for macro, USM makes this lens more convenient as it has focus manual override, meaning you can af and still manually fine tune. Also, it makes it pleasurable to use for other uses like portraits which it is excellent at. With 100mm with fast f/2.8 aperture gives you very nice bokeh and subject separation. The images are very sharp even wide open at f/2.8, comparable to quality prime lenses stopped down to f/2.8. There is one better lens than this lens which is Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L USM IS Macro Lens. I have used that lens and ended up selling that lens to go back to this lens. Here are my reasons. Image quality wise, they are so comparable. There really isn't much to improve upon the image quality ofUSM non-L version. L is better but so marginally that image quality isn't a good reason for upgrade. Two biggest reason for upgrade is weather sealing/build quality and image stabilization. I didn't need either of those. I don't shoot macro shots in the rain or snow. USM version build quality is more than good enough. As for image stabilization, it's great for non-macro low light situations. I found it still difficult to hand hold even with image stabilization for critical macro shots under less than ideal light. You still want to use a tripod even with image stabilization for sharpest reliable results. (Perhaps I just have too unstable hands ...) I also found that I don't really need image stabilization under normal situations to get sharp images using 100mm f/2.8 handheld especially with modern cameras. Now there are other reasons, perhaps more important reasons for the L version than the two mentioned. It looks very nice. It's much more attractive looking lens than the USM version. Also, since it a "L" lens with the red ring, you can take pride in the fact that you are shooting with the very best that Canon is offering. Peace of mind with no other macro lens to upgrade to on an EF mount. (Until you "need" to get the RF version...) Well, there you have it. Since none of the reasons really attractive me to the L, I got rid of it and got 135mm f2 L USM and 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro instead. Thanks for reading and hope "my opinion" and experience help with your buying decisions~

If you have the light, go to f/32 and stay there until you are dialed in on how razor thin the depth of field is that close. It takes really good macro shots. Locked up my R5

I used to own the original non L version and I was very happy with it on my 5D II and 6D. But then sold it as I lost interest in photography. I am back now with a R5 and a RF 85 f1.2.Now I am slowly buying lenses again, and this EF 100 Macro tempted me due to it's price and I already have the Canon EF to RF adapter that I use 9n my EF 50 f1.4 and EF 16-35 F4 L without any issue.Upon inspecting the 100 macro lens, I see a dust spec under the front element, but I just tried to ignore it. 5 minutes after mounting this pens to my R5, the camera froze up, even turning the on/off switch didn't do a thing. I had to pull the battery out. This might be a one off, or will be a nightmare and I don't have time to deal with this issue, so I am returning the lens. Outstanding Macro Lens

I own two Canon L macro lenses: 100mm f/2.8 IS L and 180mm f/3.5 L. My 180mm macro is still my favorite. The reduced FOV and reduced DOF are great assets for a macro lens. So is the extra working distance. I prefer the 100mm for shooting wedding details, because I tend to shoot them handheld. The reduced focal length and IS make the lens easier to use handheld. The extra half stop helps in low light conditions for weddings. The 100mm f/2.8 IS L Macro is a great lens. I wish it came with a tripod collar. You need to purchase one separately. Canon is especially proud of its tripod collar, so the price is high. I also wish the lens used 77mm filters, like almost all of my other Canon L lenses. It's 67mm. I hate step down rings, since they tend to bind and are difficult to remove. I had to buy a set of Polar Pro filters in 67mm, as a consequence.

Sharpness That Razors Envy...

Sharper than the proverbial razor, the images this lens produces will please ( and shock ) even the most discriminating photographer. There is even room for a tripod support ring, if wanted, to ensure those engaging in 1:1 image reproduction maintain the sharpness this lens is capable. If one wants to handhold and forego a tripod, the built-in IS works VERY well. One thing included in this lens design is weather sealing, which, in MHO, is more desirous than image stabilization. When using this lens in a tropical location, temperate rainforest, or even a shore setting, this latter feature is of utmost importance. [Rewarded Review] Challenging to use, but awesome results.

I had to go to YouTube University to get insight into how to do macro photography. I tried making macro photographs in the bright Arizona sun but they didn’t turn out, even at f16. The depth of field is so ridiculously shallow that you need to be f22 or smaller in order to realize the awesome potential in this lens. Of course, even in bright sun this means a flash is necessary. This is a great learning experience and I strongly recommend it.

[Rewarded Review] Great lens
12 February 2023

I purchased this lens a couple months ago and have used it more then any other lens I own. Sharp and crisp photos and the auto focus is super fast on my 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV. One complaint I have noticed from others is it does not feel like a $1300 lens and I would agree. It doesn't feel as heavy duty as some other Canon lens but I don't know if that really matters as long it produces sharp photos. I have a Canon 70mm to 200mm and a Canon 100mm to 400mm and I know they will be damaged just as this lens would be if dropped. If you want an awesome macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro IS USM lens is the way to go in my opinion.d

I was on the fence about getting this lens for the past couple of years. I finally decided to purchase it for use with my R6 via a Canon EF/RF adapter. It is definitely as tack sharp as many other reviewers point out. I tried it out on a few small flowers and bugs, and it performed flawlessly. I also did a few portraits, and the bokeh was probably one of the best I've seen.I also tested it out on my older Canon 7dmk2, and it performed equally amazing! If you are on the fence about getting this lens like I was, go for it!
