This lens has been a great value. Fixed aperture throughout the full range. L series glass! Excellent range either for a full frame camera or a crop sensor. This copy has worked flawlessly with both my 5D classic and my SL3.

Early series of this lens may have issues. A firmware update (Version 1.04) has been released which addresses an Image Stabilization issue, and some (not all!) lenses which have 48,49,50 or 51 in the first two digits of the serial number may be eligible for a Canon factory recall because of Auto Focus issues. There is a serial number checker on the Canon website for this. Now, having ruled that out, I think that this is a good lens. It works great with my 5D Mark IV, and I have shot some amazing photo's with it. This all round lens is sturdy, very solidly built, but quite heavy. It is reliable, and I have had some great results under difficult weather conditions. I have used it in Arctic and Tropical conditions, in wild nature and in urban environments, and it never ... This lens isn't perfect, and I had expected more compared to other Canon L zoom lenses I use. I get more crispy results out of my 16-35 F4 L when I compare both at overlapping zoom range. And even my 70-300 f4-5.6 L seems to deliver fresher looking results at the low end. The weight combined with it's slightly underwhelming results are a reason for me to look out for something else in this higher allround segment. But I'm not in a hurry, this lens is very decent, it's just a bit dull.

I needed a go to lens for my new BMPCC 6K. I own the original version of the 24-105 which came with my Canon C100. I love this lens. It is not perfect, but, it does everything really well. It has been around the world a dozen times and has never failed me.Since I already owned one that lives on my Canon 5dSr, I thought about buying the faster 24-70 F2.8 but it does not have stabilization. Perhaps ideal for photography, but handheld video really needs stabilization. Thus I opted to buy another 24-105.The stabilization is excellent. The lens crisp with sharp images. I am using the Mark II version of the 24-105 on my Canon 5D III. The lens balances nicely on the camera and doesn't feel too heavy. Thus, the camera and lens move quickly in the hands and get on target quickly. The autofocus is fast, silent and very accurate on the 5D III. The IS is also silent in its operation. All of my handheld shots have been quite sharp and need minimal processing in Adobe's Camera Raw. At f/4, the lens is very sharp in the middle and holds up well until the outer edges of the frame are reached where it becomes a little soft, particularly at 24 mm. I have not had a chance to fully test edge sharpness at all the different focal lengths. Yes, Canon has some sharper lenses in its stable, but I see this lens as a solid, everyday workhorse that will get the picture and can effectively communicate emotional content. The 24-105 Mark II is definitely an excellent walk-around lens for street shooting and an all-around lens when traveling. I especially like the fact that this lens is weather sealed which means one can use it in challenging situations. So forget the specs and go out and shoot. For those who understand the art of photography, the Canon 24-105 Mark II will not be disappointing.
This is an excellent lens that I did a lot of research on. Brand new, full price, it's roughly twice as much as what it was listed for here. The description said: "MINT Canon 24-105mm 1 : 4 L USM Lens + Case + Cleaner The Lens is in overall Excellent condition with some slight signs of use. Includes Lens carrying protective bag and Cleaner! No dust or debris. Shows very slight sign of use but everything works 100%." What it DIDN'T say is that there is a hairline scratch on the outer surface of the lens, in the upper right quadrant, about 3/8" of an inch long. When I first saw it I was disappointed, but thought I'd give it a try. I've field-tested it on several dozen photos and don't see any evidence that it's affecting the photos, but it would have been nice to have ... Canon makes good lenses! I really love this 24-105mm f/4 lens. The internal stablization is an excellent feature. This lens seems slightly softer (less sharp) than other Canon "L" lenses that I've used. That's not necessarily good or badjust something to take into account if you are considering purchasing this lens. These are super durable lenses and last for many years (I had one for many years, gave to a friend and now own a second one), so buying one used is often a great way to save some $$ and still get an amazing lens with many years of life left. Just make sure you purchase from a reputable seller! If I was to mention one complaint about this lens is that the zoom extension is really loose. Just make sure you purchase from a reputable seller! If I was to mention one complaint about this lens is that the zoom extension is really loose. Meaning that if you extend the zoom out to 105mm and tilt the lens so it is pointing up, gravity causes the lense to zoom back out to 24mm. And similarly, if I sling the camera over my shoulder, it slowly zooms in until it is fully extended at 105mm. I think this is partly due to heavy, high-quality glass. But still, I wish it stayed put and was stiff enough not to be affected by gravity. Having owned two of these lenses, I can say that the newer the lens, the less of a problem it is. It seems to "loosen" up over time.
As far as I'm concerned, Canon's EF 24-105 hits the sweet spot of focal ranges for everyday use as well as being great for landscapes, architecture and a myriad of other subjects. I also use it as one of my main lenses for photographing automobile races. I use this lens far more than any other lens in my kit.I photograph outdoors most of the time, rain or shine, so build quality and weather proofing are extremely important. This L lens is built tough and has the great quality glass I've come to rely on. I used the previous version of this lens extensively for 15 years and this version 2 is even better. The zoom lock is also a great addition.I have both DSLR and mirrorless bodies so the EF lens is the only one that will work on both systems. This lens is a little ... I'd owned this lens for several years and lived in denial until now. Finally, like a battered wife, I decided I have had enough of this lens. Despite seeing all of the 4 and 5 star reviews, I finally concluded that I simply got a bad copy.I tried everything to get this lens to focus, including shooting in a high f-stop to see if that would help with the focus. Nope. Nothing worked. It was just a crummy lens.So I finally decided to sell it and buy a Sigma 24-70mm. The loss of 35mm of telephoto was not an issue. Getting a lens that actually takes in-focus pictures was and it does. The first few photos I took with my new Sigma made me giggle with delight! I had not had a lens of this type before. My previous and only Canon lens was the incredibly good 100-400mm, mark 2. I use two Canon 7D Mk 2 cameras by the way (both telephotos for birds). I've had this 24-105 for several years now.I have put this 24-105 on both of my 7Ds as well as the older 60D. No improvement in focus on any of the three. Currently the 24-105 is on my trusty of 60D, b/c since there was no difference I reckoned I'd keep this crummy lens on my oldest and lowest quality camera.I kept thinking it was me.... As said this is only my second Canon lens and with my love affair with the 100-400 choosing this lens seemed to be a good choice. Wrong.I've read all of the reviews of this 24-105mm telephoto; I've even seen some comments on it when reading reviews of the Canon 24-70mm. Some people think this 24-105 is just great. Really?! They and I must be in some alternative universe from each other. If there are 24-105s that are just wonderful then I really got a dud. I shoot mainly closeups of plants, like less than 18 inches. So this is where I see the lack of sharp focus that this lens provides. I've tried everything, from using a tripod to getting on my belly trying to get a good solid hold on it, in case the problem was my shaky hands.Doesn't matter. This is just not a good lens for sharp focus at close ranges. And, frankly it isn't all that great just shooting landscapes or people. I've found that I have taken to using my 100-400mm to shoot some close-up plant photos by standing off and using the 100mm focal length! It took me a while, longer than the time allowed for returns, to realize that this lens is just really not good at all. Not...at...all, period. I've been looking at replacing it but when I read some of the reviews of the 24-70mm (mk. 2) I see the same sort of negative reviews to a degree not very reassuring to its quality either.Due to the time zone difference between me and New York City, I have not yet found the right time to call B&H and ask to speak with a consultant there who, I hope, can listen to this 'tale of woe' and suggest a Canon lens that I can try next. Perhaps even rent, which is something I've never done.
Got this with the same B&H order that delivered my full frame, so I was able to get a review of this lens using a full frame. I've attached a photo that has a 100%, 200% and 400% cropping. Photoshop was only used for the cropping.Pretty sharp in the corner but very sharp in the center area. Color is good here despite the dark clouds moving in. Photo was handheld and the IS worked nicely. I have Esential Tremmors in both hands so the IS is very important for me.This is my second L lends, the first one being the 16-35/4 IS. Third one will probably be the 70-200/2.8 IS. Those three with my full frame should make for some good photos on our next trip to the west USA. I'm happy and enjoying my new L lens.
