This is a decent lens, not as sharp as my primes but has very appealing and useful features. Actually if you just compare the 24-70 f4 to other zooms it stacks up quite nicely. It is sharper than all the other zooms I have used save my 70- 200mm f4. However, it's like a Swiss Army Knife in that it has an extremely useful focal length, lighter, plus doubles as a fairly good macro lens and has IS. I received the lens in a timely manor from B&H and did a little testing. I was some what disappointed at first with the sharpness particularly with the lens wide open at 24mm and 70mm. However a friend suggested I try a micro-management adjustment to get it dialed in to my 5d4. W+7 and T+1 were the final settings I ended up with of course yours may be different. It improved ... It improved things enough for me to go ahead an keep the lens. I now have very good sharpness across the focal range at f4 and the smaller apertures. So if your camera body supports micro adjustments and your not pleased with the 24-70 sharpness at first it may be worth a try before you return the lens to B&H. I've done mostly testing with the lens so far but have shot a few real world photos as well. Very pleasing lifelike color, good contrast, focus system is very fast and accurate and the image stabilization is handy especially when shooting video clips. I've done a few macro shots which turned out great. Folks using a cropped sensor camera like my 70d or even a 80d this lens is not to good inside unless you have a speed light attached or you use the internal flash. Full frame cameras like the 5d3 or my 5d4 can get by indoors on non moving subjects with out flash. The lens has grown on me and now it's becoming my best walk around lens. I don't need to work nearly as hard switching lenses and exposing the camera to dust etc. and the real world photo results are very nice. Happy with my choice.

I rented this lens to shoot a Veterans Day flyover from the backseat of one of the aircraft. The 24-70 turned out to be an excellent choice for this type of shoot. The auto focus performed flawlessly and the IS allowed me to shoot at slower shutter speeds to get the prop blur I wanted. I highly recommend this lens and greatly appreciate the quality of the lens sent to me by LensRentals. Been renting from them for years and I've NEVER been disappointed.

So the packaging for shipping was really good. It comes in a pelican case so it seems to be really safe. The big issue was that I planned to take photos on the beach with the lens's but when I got on the beach the internal glass fogged up for about 30 minutes. It seems like they sent me a lens that was not fully sealed so regardless of me wiping the inner or outer glass of the lens it was still fogged up. It’s because the high humidity of being on the beach but the camera lens should be sealed so that the inside glass does not fog up. The whole point of me renting the lens was for taking pics on the beach so it was unusable for that. Luckily my sister brought her Sony camera and we were able to use her camera for all the photos.

I purchased this lens last minute when I was to shoot a wedding and found my old 24-105mm wasn't focusing after getting it back from the Canon repair center. I shot most of the outdoor wedding with the 70-200mm f/2.8 and that seemed to go well. With the threat of rain, everyone spent most of the reception under a large tent. That's where I had to use the 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens. Post processing from Raw to JPG revealed nearly every shot with this lens was out of focus with nearly every shot focused well beyond the intended (and indicated) focus point or focus area (multiple focus points.) This was the same problem I was having with the 24-105mm. $400 later, I still had the problem with that lens. Now, with the 24-70 having the same issue, I'm dreading that the ... This was the same problem I was having with the 24-105mm. $400 later, I still had the problem with that lens. Now, with the 24-70 having the same issue, I'm dreading that the problem in in the camera and not the lens. At this point, that makes a truely accurate review rather difficult. I like the macro feature though you have to be practically touching the subject to focus in macro mode. The f/4 aperture isn't great for indoor shooting but forking out twice as much money for the same range to gain a single f/stop is ridiculous (as are the prices of pretty much every f/2.8 lens Canon sells. So now I have to determine if I'm willing to pay through the nose to get my camera to a Canon repair facility, for a third time, while I can still return the 24-70mm that I may not have even needed to begin with. I thought it had to be the 24-105, and now the 24-70, because the 70-200mm seemed to work fine. But shooting the 24-70mm at the Air Force Museum today convinced me that the camera is the likely culprit and I don't really have an alternative other than paying through the nose for a new camera. Nearing retirement, that just isn't a viable option any longer. So no details are left out, the camera is the Canon 1D Mark IV. I also own the 5D Mark II, 180mm macro lens, 70-200mm f/2.8, 800mm f/5.6, and the Canon XL-H1 video camera. A lot of time and money sunk into Canon-not happy!
I bought this lens 2 months ago and have used it for a couple of weddings and for general use. Image stabilization is a game-changer, especially at the hardest part of a wedding during the bridesmaid processional.I have a 24-70 f2.8L, which is a wonderful lens but it isn't stabilized and it's heavy. In a low light church, with the girls walking up the aisle I only get one chance. With a flash the old lens got acceptable sharpness with my 6D, if I was careful to not shake while taking the shot. With the new f4 with image stabilization I get excellent sharpness repeatedly. This lens solved my biggest problem.I have heard some people snobishly say they would NEVER buy anything less than an f2.8 lens, but I would never shoot those bridesmaids at 2.8. I shoot at 5.6 ... I shoot at 5.6 or 6.3 because I need the wider depth of field for the moving subject. My 6d gives fine images at high ISO.The photo quality of this lens is really good with no more distortion than the classic 24-70 f2.8, it produces a nice punchy image, it's solidly built, it's light and it's half the price of the other lenses.Don't underestimate what IS can do to improve your sharpness. I love this lens and only pull out the f2.8 occasionally now.
This review is based on testing this copy of the 24-70 f/4L lens on a 5Ds R platform and comparing it to my existing 24-105 f/4L lens for the purpose of determining whether the acquisition cost of the lens would be justified, based on any perceived performance advantage over the 24-105 f/4L on this camera. A side-by-side comparison was made with the lenses mounted on a RRS TVC 24L tripod and using a test target at 15 feet, Camera set on Aperture Priority, ISO 100, f/16. Settings for focal length were: 24, 50, 70mm. The tripod and camera position remained the same throughout the shooting, only the lenses were exchanged. AF spot focus was used and the spot position on the subject was constant. All images were examined in Photoshop CS 5.2, as raw images, no sharpening ... AF spot focus was used and the spot position on the subject was constant. All images were examined in Photoshop CS 5.2, as raw images, no sharpening or other processing. Magnification was 100%. Results: 1. At 24mm, both lenses exhibited softness at all 4 corners of the image. Centers were perceived as sharp, slight vignetting for either lens. 2. At 50 mm, lens softness was not apparent with either lens, corners sharp, no vignetting. 3. At 70mm, lens softness was not apparent with either lens, corners sharp, no vignetting. I did not use the lens for macro. My Conclusion: Based on my typical use of this type of zoom lens, I did not see enough advantage in the performance of the 24-70 f/4L to justify the cost of replacing my 24-105 f/4L for the landscape work that I do. Both of the lenses overall performed very well on the 5Ds R, despite the fact that Canon does not recommend the 24-105 f/4L for this camera. I suspect that they also feel the same about the 24-70 f/4L and would prefer the 24-70 f/2.8L II instead. I need to evaluate the new 24-70 f/2.8L II to determine if the performance of this lens would justify the price.
My first impression of this lens was that it is quite contrasty. This can be a good thing, but in my first round of tests I found it to be a bit unforgiving in the brighter areas of the pictures, which were blown out and lacked detail. In the next round of tests I took care to pay more attention to the camera's histogram and highlight warning to avoid overexposing the bright areas (this required several of the shots to be retaken with exposure comp stopped down a bit), and got much better results. Sharpness is good (not quite as sharp in the center compared to my 70-300L at 70mm, but sharper in the corners, which was quite impressive). Feels sturdy, colors are nice (when exposure is correct), and focus and IS are both very quiet. Fluorine coating and weather ... MoreMy first impression of this lens was that it is quite contrasty. Fluorine coating and weather resistance are both welcome features, as is the macro, which works as advertised. Hopefully these features will make it worth the extra money. During my tests I noticed that this lens seems to lose up to 1/2 stop of light compared to my other 2 lenses (sometimes auto-exposure settings were 1/2 stop brighter to get identical results compared to the other lenses). I don't know why.
It may not be Canon's sharpest lens, I wouldn't know as I prefer not to spend twice as much for the f/2.8 version of the 24-70 mm lens. But, I shoot mainly landscapes and wide angle close ups with this lens, so it works very well for me. It's sharp from corner to corner, the auto-focusing is fast and accurate even in low light, and the color reproduction is outstanding in my opinion. This lens fills the hole in my lens line up from the 16-35 mm f/4 lens to the 70-200 mm f/4 lenses that I already own. So, you get both the benefits of an extension tube, and the short comings that go with it. That's okay, I can live with that, as it does what I need it to do, even if it isn't a true macro lens. I'm able to get all of larger flowers in focus, so shooting with it has its advantages, mainly more depth of field than with my 100 mm macro lens. The lens seems to be as well built as the other Canon L series lenses that I own, and the zoom lock is a nice addition also.
Having moved in to full frame last year I bought this as a general purpose lens for the 6D to match the outstanding IQ that the 6D is able to return. I'm finding it as sharp if not better than my mk1 24-70mm f/2.8L but with the added advantage of IS which can hold a shot steady down to about half a second. The size is just right and gives a good balance on a 6D and similar sized cameras. The macro facility works but is a compromise and one which some reviews have pointed out. IS isn't quite as effective a very close range but with care and a tripod results are achievable making this a very versatile lens. Around the same time as I bought the lens a windows update knocked out my monitor colour profile. Once this was recalibrated I found that I had overcooked a lot of my images in post processing. The basic default profile in DXO optics pro was more than enough to pop out the colour and levels for dynamic looking images. This lens has indeed produced more straight out of camera keepers than any other lens I have at this range including the 24-105L and the often under rated 17-40L. The surprise came when I tried it out on my 7D mark 1. On the crop body the lens works as a 38-112mm in 35mm terms, still a very useful range after losing the wide end. It did however unlock new levels of sharpness and quality that my other Canon lenses with the exception of the 17-40L didn't achieve. Clearly the latest optics have a resoloution capable of driving the higher pixel density on the 7D sensor. Pixel level viewing (not advised by many but we still all do it!) shows impressive rendition of fine detail witout additional sharpening. On the 7D this lens outperformed the 24-70mm 2.8L mk1, and blew away the EF-S 17-55mm IS f2.8. It's a highly recommended buy for a 70D or 7D as well as a trusty hard working standard for a full framer especially now the pixel race seems to be back on again. There are a lot of pros out there who will need to stick with the f2.8 version just for the extra stop which the portrait, wedding, and sports shooters need to earn their living. For the rest of us the f4L line will never leave you feeling you have bought second best.
Great versatile zoom lens. Good sharpness through range. Fast AF, good image stabilization, and handy macro feature add to the value of this lens. Works great even on EOS R mirrorless cameras with the adaptor.
