With a zoom range of 18 to 135mm, this Canon EF-S lens is very versatile and can serve as the single optic a photographer needs for a variety of purposes. The relatively light weight is a plus as a walk-around lens, but the trade-off is that it does not offer a wide aperture, especially at the longer end of the zoom. However, it is certainly fast enough when paired with a camera body that handles higher ISOs well.

The Canon 18-135mm series lens is a good step up from the kit 18-55mm lens if you're looking for something with a bit more reach and better image quality than the 18-200mm lenses with a focus on video recording. The sharpness is very good, even comparing to the surprisingly sharp 18-55mm, but what got my interest is the Nano USM focus system. This is Canon's latest and somewhat greatest, gearing mostly to video work. It's very fast (comparable to L USM lenses) but the highlight is the smoother/gradual and faster (more silent too) focusing when compared to lenses with STM. Overall, it's wonderful for video recording and more than sufficient for photos. This newest mark of the 18-135mm is so video oriented that Canon even has the Power Zoom PZ-E1 adapter especially ... The modern day superzoom have good image quality and focusing speed, can be smaller, and of course, that extra reach you won't have regardless how fancy your 18-135mm lens is. So if you want a good zoom lens to replace your kit and you'll be doing some video recording, this is a good pick. Otherwise, for vacation and casual everyday pics, I would personally look at the superzooms. Have fun, friends!

I compared it to the 17-55/2.8, and I think the 18-135 USM has as good or better image, plus the much longer range, makes it my go-to lens. Yes, f2.8 can be useful, but... I have traveled 2 weeks in Italy and a week in Israel, and a week in Austria and used this lens almost exclusively (about 3000 images). I still like a wider angle and a longer telephoto sometimes, but the versatility of this lens is great. I love the USM focusing so much. I wish the new RF18-150 used a USM focusing motor, and pretty much all the RF lower cost lenses. There cannot be enough savings to spoil the user experience of USM ... In the last couple of years I've had a ridiculous number of lenses. You can read all the reviews that you like. There's nothing like having the pieces in your hands and using them on your cameras. Some reasonably priced lenses, for instance the 24mm pancake, the 50mm prime, and the 85mm prime, have been consistently crisp and clear. Just excellent units at pretty low prices. You can't ask for better than that. The thing there is that traditionally, prime lenses were sharper and more consistently exhibited better focus than zoom lenses. That's changed. With primes, you carry a few of them. Zooms are really convenient. Convenience versus clarity is a decision that's no longer necessarily one that need be made. Now I can understand Pros using L Series lenses for their superior light gathering capabilities. If you don't need that capability and don't care about the status that showing up with a fancy L Series lens confers, play it smart. Get one of these. You get great photos and you can snicker quietly at those that just don't get it.
This lens has been with me through thick and thin! So much so that I bought a second one for when I'm shooting weddings and need two cameras that can get a wide range of focus.Compared to a prime lens, the quality in low light is not as good, but that is to be expected. Overall I have been pleased with the quality since I'm not shooting in extremely dark settings.

The lens I was going to use is having an issue focusing so after researching zoom lenses that were good for video I decided to add this to my rental, which I had placed a week earlier. My order was not supposed to ship for a couple days but every time I tried to add this lens it would add another $25 for shipping. If I wanted to cancel my rental and change the start date, it would only charge $5 additional for shipping. It was a Sunday so I emailed customer service to see if they could help get it added. On Monday morning I received an email from DW who helped me get this added onto my rental to ship with the other items and also made ... We were outside for the ceremony and the recording camera was about 25-30 feet from the trellis, and this was a perfect zoom lens to have zoomed out when everyone was walking down the aisle, and then zoom in on the couple during the ceremony and zoom back out when they were coming back up the aisle. The video quality was good and the couple just wanted it recorded so they could watch it in the future.
Great flexible lens. Quiet focus motor. Nice range for general purpose use. Works well for video and images. Smooth operation. Overall very nice. Good for pretty much everything except very low light level without flash and not good for macro. I'm using this on a Canon Rebel SL3.
I bought this lens mostly to use as a one-size-fits-all travel lens with an 800D and 90D bodies, giving me an effective 28-220 lens (compared to full-frame, accounting for the APS-C crop-factor). Focus is fast, silent and accurate. Bokeh is not bad - check out the Monarch photo attached. It is great for traveling when I only have room to pack the smaller body and one lens.I can also use it on my EOS C100 Mk II, as it is on the short-list of lenses that support DPAF face-detection. This is also the only lens supported by the Canon PZ-E1 power zoom adapter, so I can use the BR-E1 remote to control zoom, focus and shutter.Overall when I compare images from the 90D with this lens, versus 5D Mk IV using L-series lenses, I can hardly notice any difference. As there is generally no time to change lenses to best suit the scene - one lens must do it all, and do it well, especially when some images will be selected for publication in a magazine, etc. I simply adjust for exposure and white balance, and shoot away, quickly zooming in and out to compose the shot - as focus and exposure are very accurate and reliable. AND, this is the ONE lens I would take on a trip across Europe or across the US - it covers wide to modest tele and everything in between - excellent when touring factories, breweries, distilleries (my favorite), and museums. I have probably taken over 50,000 pictures with this lens now. Indoor, outside, nature, weddings, sports, kids, pets, low light, daylight you name it. This is a quality built great versatile lens for your go-to lens. Super crisp, clear, and good stabilization.I have pictures where I can see my house reflection in the bubble my son blew. I can see reflections of the surroundings in water drops on my sons face coming out of the lake. With the correct camera settings you count individual eyelashes. Count water drops on the face of a tuber while on the moving boat. This will make your photography better. Used on Canon Rebel T7i and T8i.
