I've only been in photography for 40 years, own over $50k in professional lenses, bodies and equipment. I bought a new Canon RP gold edition in box. I didn't have to prove I was a beginner in photography to buy it. I love reading other reviewers reporting this as an "entry-level" camera for budding amateurs. Seems like he did just OK. They remind me of the incompetent drivers that buy BMW's, thinking the car - not the operator - will make them a better driver (Statistically, BMW owners are the world's worst drivers!). I'm also a professional driver having attended four professional and racing courses, with over a million miles driven, and zero accidents or tickets. I drive a Honda! And obviously, way more professional than the group I just mentioned. It's also reflected in my low USAA bills. Perhaps I should show these reviewers what to do with their "entry-level" Canon RP's so they can get to the next level. With luck and a miracle, perhaps they'll be at my level one day. It's not what is between your hands - It's what is between your ears, and what your creativity allows you to do with almost nothing in your hands but a wooden camera. Sorry, I also have an IQ of only 165. So imagine what a creative tool any digital camera is in the right hands. Even the so-called mundane, inexpensive Canon RP. Oh, I hear Honda dealers take those BMW's that are causing you to be a poor driver in trade. And I take all Canon RP's that are also meant for beginners. Thanks.

I bought this fine little camera as a Christmas gift for my husband, totally surprising him with it. He's already thrilled with the smaller size and weight - much different from his Canon 7D Mark II - and the transition from that camera to this one seems fairly easy.I got the R7 mirrorless in June and have had a great experience with it thus far, and I chose the RP for him because the two cameras share many of the same great features.Having had 6 months' experience with the R7 made setting up the RP pretty easy. In both cameras, the face and eye detection features work really well. If this bit of AI interests you as a potential buyer, my experience is that Canon has nailed it for these algorithms and I'm sure they'll only improve over time as the software ... It is well-balanced with this lens and I imagine would be with larger lenses too.The manual covers a nice range of shooting scenarios to explain the options and the instructions are easy to read. Turning it on, installing battery and card are easy and intuitive. My first photos didn't need instructions at all. The lens, btw, expresses itself beautifully). I read about the Canon Connect app and downloaded it and was transferring those photos to my phone and sharing them within minutes.One of the features I didn't care about at all and in fact want to get away from is the video. I won't be using it regularly, if at all and I didn't want the cost of the camera influenced by a feature I didn't need or want. So there is video and all I can say is, it is easy to ignore.I wish the screen was larger. It's 3 inches which is comparable to many other cameras but feels a bit small coming after an iphone max screen. That's really my only complaint. As I said, I'm a beginner to these cameras and there may be annoyances down the road but it certainly fulfills my goal of a simple to learn mirrorless that my hobby will be able to grow with and benefit from for several years.The camera was a body only purchase with separate rf lenses purchased individually.

This is a highly capable full frame sensor camera with features that allow easy control of the shooting parameters. There is a trade-off between size and weight in going from APS-C sensor to full frame and I decided to accept the bigger camera in exchange for the better photo quality and convenient controls. Note that most of the added weight and size is in the lenses, not so much the camera body. The camera also fit in my hand better than the Canon M50. I already have an S110 pocket camera and my daughter has an APS-C type so the RP adds some professional level quality that I am enjoying.There is a lot to learn in order to make full use of all of the camera's features, which you can learn from online tutorials and the full manual available online.I also want to ... I bought this camera to upgrade the technology to a mirrorless camera. I have a Canon 6D camera and I felt as if I didn't downgrade in functionality because this camera had all the functionality and then some. This camera came with the 24-105 lens.My Canon 6D had GPS receiver built in to geotag the images. The RP didn't have this functionality so I bought a Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 because I like to geotag all my photos. The receiver goes on the hot shoe and it is very easy to set up. It worked very well.The flip out screen is definitely a game changer and that was another main reason to buy the camera.I took some pictures with the Mode Dial set to "Scene Intelligent Auto" and found the pictures came out really good. It would be great if the camera had ibis, and I wish it had 1 or 2 more buttons on it that could be programmed ( I miss a dedicated iso button, but use the lens control ring for that). I can live with the frame rate for what I am using the camera for. This would absolutely be a 5 star rating if the 4K video focus were better and there were a few more direct controls.But I understand it's an entry level camera built to a price point, and I'm glad there are now a number of inexpensive lenses that people could purchase to keep the price down.. In my case I sacrificed a little bit of performance out of the body to be able to purchase the better L-series glass for the camera, it was a wise trade off for me.Overall, for an advanced enthusiast like myself, I am very satisfied with this camera. In a few years I will look forward to upgrading to a higher performing body, but it suits my needs very well at this point. I would highly recommend anybody looking to get into full frame for a reasonable price to look at an RP body.

I did use a Canon 70D at work for many years so I was comfortable with the Canon architecture and decided on Canon when it came time for finally buying my own. I also wanted a full frame, mirrorless camera and I narrowed it down to the RP & R. I really did not see the advantages of the price difference so opted for the RP. So far I have purchased a couple lenses, extension grip and a spare battery for the unit and have overall been satisfied in its performance. I will need to secure an external flash since there isn’t one built in (although from what I gather none of the R series cameras have an internal flash) but ... I will need to secure an external flash since there isn’t one built in (although from what I gather none of the R series cameras have an internal flash) but aside from that I’m very happy with it. I’ve heard some folks criticizing the crop on the 4K recording, but video is not my primary focus with this camera. I’ve also heard reports of some earlier models of the RP overheating in hot or humid conditions, but since this unit has been around about 4 years hopefully those issues have been resolved at the factory. No problems on my end yet, however it hasn’t experienced a Deep South humid summer yet. I’m highly satisfied so far with the limited time I’ve had with it. The battery level can drop rapidly when the indicator reaches the 50% mark. I would recommend buying spare batteries so you don't get caught out if the battery level depletes quickly.If you are looking for an excellent camera that can create sharp, colourful and beautiful images at a sensible price, the Canon EOS RP can deliver that. If you are undecided, do a little bit of research and decide if this is the camera for you. If you want to invest in the impressive RF lenses and upgrade the camera body later, in my opinion, this is an excellent choice.
I shoot mainly video, hardly any photography. I have an R6 as my A-cam and was looking for something in the same family as my B-cam so I could match colors between the two cameras more easily. I think this camera is fine, it does the job okay. Full frame for this cheap, that was my biggest selling point.The footage from this camera is not super great. It could be because I had a cheap lens on it (RF 24-105 f/4-7.1). I slapped on my 24-70mm f/2.8 USM II and the resulting footage was much better (crazy the difference a lens can make in image quality) but still not superb. The two areas it is lacking most in my opinion is the autofocus and the lack of menu options. I had the 24-70mm f/2.8 USM II on it, a very popular and very sharp lens, and the RP's autofocus took ... I came back from an entire day of shooting to find that most of an hour-long interview, it was focusing on the wall behind my subject, when my subject was directly in front of the camera. You could say it's my fault for not monitoring the camera for the whole time, but when you're a one man band wearing all the hats anyways, a camera that's mainly unreliable, and doesn't check off my boxes the way I was planning it to, doesn't make sense to keep in my camera bag.Overall, I'm selling this camera now because 1 it wasn't reliable for a whole day's shoot, 2 no C-Log (I knew this upon buying, but decided to buy anyways and I am regretting it), 3 autofocus is seriously lacking!!!! it hunts like crazy, focuses on the most random parts of your image at the worst times, and can't hold focus on a still subject in an interview setting. I'm considering buying the R7 (even though it's an APS-C sensor) because of 1 the raving reviews I've seen about it, 2 the improved autofocus, and 3 C-Log
Bought this camera to use as a travel camera with the compact 50mm and 24mm and can’t be happier. The smaller body size lets me throw it in my bag and take it everywhere but I still get full frame performance. Does it have the best auto focus? No. Does it have image stabilization? No. But for its price it gets the job done and the RAW files it makes works perfectly for my photographic style. I put an image stabilized lens on it, throw an extra battery in my pocket (because the battery capacity is a little on the low side), and start looking for something to capture.My only complaints are the lack of as many custom buttons that I’m used to on a mirrorless body and the less-than-intuitive menu system.
