Compact in Size. Long in Possibilities. The Canon PowerShot SX720 HS captures outstanding images in a compact package, thanks to its 20.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC 6 image processing engine, 40x optical zoom with Zoom Framing Assist, and intelligent Optical Image Stabiliser with Power IS mode - which guarantees steady and sharp images, even when fully zoomed in - making it an ideal travel camera. The SX720HS has a generous 3.0-type 922k sRBG dot LCD monitor, which lets you view your subjects clearly and in great detail. Youll never miss a moment thanks to its autofocusing speed of just 0.11 seconds and the 5.9 frames per second continuous shooting capability. Full HD 1080p 60p video recording is available, and thanks to the 5-axis Dynamic Image Stabiliser and Auto Level features, steady footage is easy to attain. You can also record 4, 5, or 6 second movie clips with various playback options such as Story Highlights or Short Clip movie modes, which let you edit your images and movie clips into a movie album. The SX720HS lets you connect to your smart devices via Wi-Fi with Dynamic NFC, so you can share files with just one tap. Remote Shooting is also available, which uses GPS via Mobile to record where you take your images, and the Image sync feature automatically backs up new images to cloud services.

I scoured the internet for the best camera available within my limited budget. The Canon Powershot has lived up to its expectations and some. Auto-focus does not work reliably on this camera. I owned a lower model Powershot and never had this problem. I lost it and upgraded to this SX720 HS. I attribute its auto-focus problems to the 40x optical zoom, which is much greater that the 10x I had on my previous Powershot. Auto-focus works fine in Auto mode, but in Program, Av, or Tv mode, not so much. Auto mode has a wide field of focus--it will establish multiple auto-focus targets anywhere in the whole frame. In P, Av, or Tv mode this is not the case. Auto-focus is restricted to one focus point in a much smaller rectangle in the center of the frame. The camera has an apparent problem with this and sometimes will not auto-focus. The camera has an apparent problem with this and sometimes will not auto-focus. It may display a yellow warning box indicating that it cannot focus, or, worse, it may beep and the focus frame turns blue to indicate focus, but you can see on the screen that the image is still fuzzy. Worse yet, sometimes it indicates focus and it looks good on the camera's small screen, so you take the shot. But when reviewed on a larger display, it turns out to have been slightly out-of-focus. The manual says to solve auto-focus problems by using a tripod, or choosing a different higher-contrast subject. I have a tripod in my dSLR kit attached to its backpack carrying case. I want a point-and-click for when I can't carry all that stuff with me. As for choose another subject--that's great advice for an expensive camera: Sorry, you don't want that shot--take a picture of something else instead. Yeah, right. When auto-focus works, this camera is stupendous. The 40X zoom and its superb anti-shake processing give great zoomed shots. And it's packed with many other super features--except AE backeting so you could do some HDR post-processing. Bottom line: if you are looking for a point and click camera, stick to Auto mode only, 40x optical zoom is a requirement, and you don't mind paying a high price for a lot of other features you will not be able to use, the SX720 is for you.

This SX720 HS replaces a similar camera that, for some reason, lost its ability to focus distances. I wanted to be sure that the replacement camera could focus distances and take decent low light pictures. I like to take pictures of birds and other animals. I like to challenge myself with distance shots of landscapes, aircraft, and beyond. Sometimes I want to get in a last-minute picture after sunset. In my opinion and my amateur experience, this compact camera excels! Posted is a picture I took of Jupiter and some of its moons this morning. Using the low light feature, timer, and a tripod. I did crop the picture to show its detail. Also posted is a picture I was able to get of a Red-tailed Hawk taken twenty minutes after sunset.

I am giving this 5 stars for the time being. I love the 40X zoom, which is the reason I bought this particular camera. Have not had much opportunity to use it, but do like the pictures that I have taken. The only thing I will have to get used to is removing the battery to charge in the charger. I actually prefer plugging the camera into the wall socket directly to charge. Having to buy a second battery might not be a bad thing though. Do not know the length of a battery charge as of yet. Pictures using the flash have turned out very good, unlike some flashes on other cameras. I don't like having to manually flip the switch to get the flash to pop up--I would prefer it to come up automatically when needed. Easy to hold. Not heavy or bulky for a 49X zoom. Wish Canon would include a full manual--certainly don't want to carry a computer around with me to read about camera aspects. Not sure what the difference is between a U.S. model and the international version other than I have read that an international version will not be covered by a Canon warranty. This is not from personal experience, but trying to determine which model you are purchasing is sometimes not the easiest thing to do if you don't buy directly from Canon. I was able to purchase this camera for a greatprice!
Good Points: I looked at many cameras before deciding to buy this Canon. I already own a DSLR but wanted something smaller to carry on a daily basis as mobile phone quality pictures aren't great when you print. This little Canon is an amazing piece of kit! There are so many functions which will keep you busy and I haven't read all the instructions but part of the fun has been figuring out them all which isn't too tricky. It's small and compact and feels nice to hold. It fits in my Jean pocket and coat pocket with ease. The fact i got a bundle with the protective case and mini gorilla tripod is a great added bonus. I would highly recommend this for personal use or as a gift, you will not be disappointed! 5*'s from me.Improvement Points: I do find connecting to my mobile phone a bit fiddly with the app on my phone but with practice this should get better.I would recommend buying a decent size memory card as the picture and video quality are high you can fill an 8gb card quite quick.
Very happy with the camera. It was a gift for someone who loves to take close-up nature photos. The extended optical zoom has allowed shots she couldn't have gotten any other way. The exposure and sharpness are more than acceptable even when enlarged. Photos of the moon are well exposed and show the details of craters, etc without washing out or being too dark. The small smooth size allows it to be carried in a pocket so it's always at hand. The "good enough" photo you get beats the "perfect" photo you didn't because you didn't have the bigger pro camera with you. Construction is solid, features easy to use. A great value as Refurbished, looks and operates like new.
This is my third Canon PowerShot over the past decade. It is a little disappointing that features like on-board GPS went away (probably to save battery life) at least one model ago. On the other hand, the improved optical zoom is outstanding. The camera takes great photos by day and is pretty reliable on manual settings for hand-held night shots (and it does outstanding on 15 second exposure nighttime shots when resting on a solid surface). Like the 710 which this replaced for me, the fine-tuning of the manual focus could be better (because auto-focus is fairly unreliable in lower light) - the camera sometimes seems to decide that I really didn't mean infinity when I set it to infinity and I have to keep going back to reset it. In fact, I had to replace my 710 (after about 3 years and tens of thousands of photos) because the lens would no longer retract after it fought me for hours during an evening of taking lots of photos and I hope this does not happen quickly with this model. Also, the iPhone App is really quite mediocre and hasn't improved in years. I use it to transfer photos on the go and it often just decides to disconnect; it only has very limited controls for the camera if I want to use the App's remote shooting option; and its GPS logging often loses track of where I am to the point that I usually no longer use it because it just burns my iPhone's battery for limited Geotagging success.
This was a Christmas gift for my dad and I put a lot of thought into a good point and shoot camera. He had a Canon in the past and when technology changed, he went with a Nikon (lighter and more simple). When I read the reviews, I compared with other cameras and decided this is the best bet. I wished it was in the store so I could have seen the actual product before purchasing, that probably would have swayed my opinion for another product. Overall, it is a great camera, takes beautiful pictures but I will keep my eye out for other options when it comes to needing it replaced. The pros: Beautiful pictures, nice size screen for viewing. Overall, it is a great camera, takes beautiful pictures but I will keep my eye out for other options when it comes to needing it replaced. The pros: Beautiful pictures, nice size screen for viewing. I like that it automatically shuts off the camera potion when you're taking a long time to view the photos (so you can keep reviewing your photos while the lens potion is shut down and protected). Even though the flash is a manual flip-up, when you're trying to take a picture and the camera needs more light, it will tell you that the flash isn't up. I also liked how the focal point square adjusts to the size of the object. The cons: People did comment that you had to manually flip the flash up which I accepted but still unsure why Canon stepped back in technology. My only guess is when people don't want the flash to go off, it can be bypassed. Still awkward for the average user. Another drawback is once you take the picture, it takes a minute for the image to come up on the screen. If I recall, this was supposed to be faster than the Nikon Coolpix but I'm not so sure. The weight is a bit on the heavy side but I was looking for quality instead of light weight. It seems like it has more buttons and knobs separated out than the typical camera but again, maybe it is preferred for people that use all of that.Overall, there are a lot of fancy things on this camera that I didn't need but I was wanting my dad to have a good camera that produced sharp pictures (which it does). We haven't downloaded pictures yet (which will be a fun project), since you have to connect to Wi-Fi instead of using the USB cable. I'm not sure how easy that will be but, we can get it figured out. He will have to play with it some more to get used to the camera but I'm sure he will be fine.
I have been using this camera for over a year now and my take on this may seem to be very different from the general view. I got it for around 350$ from Best Buy in June 2017 and have used it off and on in various locations and settings. I am neither a pro in photography nor understand much about manual and other modes - of course that's one of the reason I went for a point-and-shoot. Over the period that I have used it, I have found the performance extremely unsatisfactory. Don't get enticed by the 40x optical zoom - it does have it but the images are extremely shaky. Even without zoom the camera captures slight ghost images - it's really hard to take perfectly still images. I haven't tried a tripod though - but you don't use tripod for every day photographs. I problem with the wifi is that it is extremely comples to pair and use - it is almost unusable - I stopped using the wifi after a few times. The main reasons that I opted for this camera - 40x zoom and wifi connectivity have been defeated. I am much disappointed with the performance of this item considering the price - I have used better products and have almost never inspired to use it. I wish I have returned this while I had the time - I refrained because I wanted to give it some more time.
