I've wanted to own a TS lens for a long time. When Canon came out with the new additions to their collection I decided to try one out. I borrowed the new 50mm macro through Canon CPS and fell in love with it. It turned me into a believer. This lens is sharp. I used my 5DSR and found out I could stop down to f24 before getting any noticeable diffraction. Software will not increase the depth of field without focus stacking. All I had to do is run down to the basement, take one photograph, download it and I was done. Not a pixel lost. I love this lens. The 24 will be next!

Optically, Canon's TSE 50mm is an excellent lens. It performs as expected with both shift and tilt. However as a lens designed for manual focus it falls short of being an excellent lens overall - the focus throw is too short making accurate focus far more difficult than necessary. It's a shame, why would you build a lens requiring manual focus with a short focus throw? With a long throw, you can ease into tack sharp focus. As it is tack sharp focus is difficult to achieve because you can't fine tune the focus. There was no need for this, Canon could easily have designed the lens with far better manual focus than they did.

In the early days, most cameras were essentially tilt- shift in design. That was an essential part of composure that was lost over time. The 50mm TS- E is a perfect do- all lens size. The ability to shoot panorama and macro is an added bonus. Sharper and noticeably higher resolution than the 50mm f/ 1.2L, and especially in landscape. The tilt function can add an interesting twist to portraiture. Quality is superb and the function is smooth. If you want to eliminate soft corner focus, this is the lens that can do that due to the glass size. My 1DX MK3 has a focus arrow feature and face recognition for this lens that makes it super accurate and almost as fast as an auto-focus lens. Definitely 10 out of 10.

The original TS-E 90mm f2.8 was my most used lens. Used it for many years for product still life and architecture photography and loved everything about it. When I saw Canon had updated it I knew I had to upgrade. Much sharper wide open and while similar sharpness ro the original when stopped down, the new lens has much better correction when shifted which could be a problem at the limits of tilt or shift on the old lens. One negative however, the focus throw on the new lens from 3m to infinity is way to short and much more difficult to adjust focus. Has taken me some getting used to and possibly a trade off for its macro designation. This is a really great lens! It's razor-sharp and built like a tank. I mostly use the shift function for straight lines in architecture and interior photography, although I've also been using it to stitch together panoramas (you can basically double the resolution of your camera doing and you get less distortion in the images because of the longer focal length.) The 50mm focal length is also great for detail shots and portraits. I highly recommend it!
After extensive side-by-side evaluation, as much as I wanted to be ok with the 45mm TS-E, the 50mm was just so much better I couldn't be ok with the older design. In addition to being *much* sharper, it has virtually zero chromatic aberration, better color rendering and no distortion-all issues with the 45mm lens. The 45mm also has some bad flaring issues that crop up, especially at night with light sources near the corners of the frame.In fact, 50mm TS-E resolves better than any other L-series lens I own, including my RF 24-70, & the 24mm and 17mm EF TS-E lenses. It practically embarrasses the 24mm TS-E and definitely makes me anxious for an update to that lens. Having worked with 4x5 film camera which was stunning and has movements, wanted to max out quality and depth of field / sharp focus, without the time commitment of film developing, scanning, etc. 35mm is also portable and widely supported which is a plus. Don’t have the budget for a phase one. Shooting with 5DsR, tripod, wireless release, ISO 100.Largely nature still life, some landscape, or fine art type work.Lens is a pleasure, tough to find any deals used or gray market. Sharp. Haven’t compared with Sigma 50mm ART.

These are lenses for meticulously composed shots. The 50mm is perhaps the most versatile lens, not only just because of the focal length, but also because of its full set of features. 1. At F/2.8, it is at least on par with the EF L zooms. 2. It's far sharper than any 50mm lens, or any wide-to-medium lenses. It also has less color fringing. 3. The tilting function allows simulating certain shallow DOF effect by larger F number 50mm lenses. 4.Shifting correction may not be as dramatic as the 17mm and 24mm, but can be usefil, especially when used with 5. Therefore, it will be the 50mm I would choose, if only one is allowed, as it can do basically all other 50mm can, except for auto focusing.Talking about issues, there aren't many really. I noticed that when the lens is tilted, the focus shifts. This is different from the wide TS-E lenses. So, I have to focus after tilting. I would usually need the live view for focusing. However, surprisingly, the viewfinder auto focusing indicator also works after tilting. And it works for all focusing points (1D X tested). Another problem is auto exposure and auto white balance may be incorrect after tilting. This is after updating to the latest firmware, which was supposed to fix this issue. So, to use this lens, lock in exposure and white balance first, tilt/shift, and then focus. A sturdy tripod and a tripod head are therefore needed. These issues are consistent for all the new TS-E macro lenses by the way.
This film era shift lens is only sharp enough for digital capture in the center. The amount of available shift is pretty good relative to the focal length, but as soon as you shift, the image becomes very soft at any aperture. Canon's T/S lenses are much better, especially the 17mm.
I have waited so long for an update to the old TS-E 45mm that I never liked enough to own. When I saw Canon had released this new version I knew it was the lens I'd been waiting for. Its a real gem. I shoot architecture and interiors and its a brilliant focal length as the 24mm TS-E is often just too wide. Superb sharpness and image quality with only a slight smidge of distortion. Sharp wide open and when tilted or shifted. With the EF25ii extension tune can do 1:1 macro. Only negative is the short focus throw from 3m to infinity that makes focusing a little more difficult than it should be but I'm getting used to it. Highly recommended.
