This will be my second review, because I neglected to put #sweepstakes in the first one. Since I wrote the first one I have had more time to use these, and am even more enthusiastic about them. The quality is excellent, as is the variety of colors available. They are helpful for adding highlights over Museum Aquarelle pencils. I have been experimenting using them on different surfaces. I have a sketch done on hot press watercolor paper and anticipate that will be the best choice to take full advantage of the water solublity.

Such brilliant color! Such fun! Oh how I love using these, I can't stop! I used some Christmas money along with a Blick gift card to buy myself the 96 piece set after having a smaller tin for a few years. They have become a mainstay in my mixed media work. I'm also a teacher and got the class pack for my students to use. I'm "art on a cart" and these paint crayons (as my students call them) allow the littles to paint in our short sessions in a carpeted room. I have them create the work during most of our 30 minute class, then for the last part of class, I hand out small brushes and a small amount of water for them to activate their drawings. The WOW factor is fantastic!!

These water soluble wax pastels are very easy to use. There's a good range of colours in this set of 40. They are very smooth to apply, and the pigment load is dense, which means the colours are rich and intense. If you want to change how you've applied them, you just remove that area with a brush or rag soaked in water. It dissolves completely. If you want a watercolour effect, just smooth over the applied pastel with a wet brush. I love how they work with acrylics and watercolour, and am so glad I invested in them.

I paint plein air. If outside temperature is 75° F, or more, the wax base pastels melt at the end into your hand getting quite messy. I usually do oil painting and find that the finished product using pastels still looks a bit crayon like rather than a watercolor painting. I did like the idea of keeping set in my car to paint at whim. However, that's not feasible with high temperatures... I like the idea of using these with a young child under adult supervision.. I Would have liked more color choices to add individual pastels with more neutral gray greens.hashtag #sweepstakes
I love this product. The colors are bold and saturated. I use these with acrylics on paper and on panel. They blend well with water, mediums, or acrylics. Works well with water brushes as well. Great for doing work in sketchbook where you might not want to use a lot of heavy paint. #sweepstakes
I only have one complaint about these.. the box should be bigger, so you can add an extra one or two. But color chart these and you've find you have astonishing range simply by layering one color over another then hitting them with a wet to damp brush. Heavily pigmented and very convenient for sketching on the fly these don't feel "serious" the way a palette of paints does so they're fun for experimenting and sketching, and a great choice if you want to explore creating color blends because you have very precise control over how much of each color you're putting down on the paper. #sweepstakes
I gave these watercolor pastels a try and overall, I like them. The colors are vibrant, and you don't need a lot of color applied to the page to get a rich result. One crayon was broken, but I can't blame the seller for that. I still need to work with them some more. I think they will come in handy for blended backgrounds.
The water solubility on these is amazing. You can create so much depth with even just one color and a water brush. If you like to sketch on the go you need to try these. You can even touch your water brush to the pastel and pick up small amounts of color that way. When drawing directly onto paper they don't get mushy and no sticky feel.
I got these open stock to experiment using them in my sketchbook, layering over gouache and pencil. I love them on their own, with a bit of water, over other mediums - they are gorgeous! And if, like me, you are using sketchbook play to loosen up a bit - I'm a Classical Realist artist, so my work tends to be rather tight - then these are perfect. The colors are vibrant - although I did stick with a more muted palette. The medium is very responsive - apply lightly or thickly, layer it over itself to build up intensity or other media to augment it. Use water sparingly or get splashy. You can sharpen the sticks - and someone on the interwebs suggested putting the shavings on a palette or use 1/2 pans (this is what I do) to rewet and use later. The Neocolor IIs are ... MoreI got these open stock to experiment using them in my sketchbook, layering over gouache and pencil. Wow. These are awesome crayons. They pastels, but the handle like a soft crayon. I recently used the crayons out on a plain air excursion to a local swamp area and I enjoyed using them to draw the brush and swamp grasses. When I returned home I took a small flat sable paint brush and lightly brushed over the drawing with water. The crayons are not water soluble and I liked how I was able to blend and soften some areas of my drawing with a paint brush and water.
