I'd recommend getting used to "normal" catan before adding this expansion, as there are various extra rules that make the game difficult to follow. If you know what you're doing though it's a great expansion, almost makes it a brand new game. Additions include the ability to have ships, which are basically like roads but you can rearrange them after they've been built, and the pirate, essentially the robber for the sea. The best bit for me though is the new "scenarios" in the rules - these describe different board layouts and different games you can play. For example, in one scenario there are multiple islands to travel to which you can settle on for extra victory points. This involves building and moving ships, and using the pirate to stop your opponents - essentially making the most of the new game mechanics.Overall, the game is made better by the addition of ships and islands, but the scenarios make it better still by giving more context and a story in which to play. Definitely a worthwhile addition if you already enjoy Catan.

Ever since covid closed down schools a year ago, my kids and I started playing a daily game of the Settlers of Catan. To mix things up a bit, we have bought additional expansion sets. Of all the different expansions, seafarers is our favorite. We have followed the example boards that come in the guide and we also make up our own. I love this game so much and look forward to playing it every day just as much as the kids.

This game is the perfect way to cure any boredom felt from the first game. Especially when combined with Cities and Knights, there are so many different ways to play this game. Haven't really been bored of this one yet.

While many people are fans of Cities & Knights, this is the best expansion for Catan, in my humble opinion. The sea tiles and boats add a nice variety, and the gold resource is a great strategic addition. It still has all the problems of base Catan (overly luck-dependent, limited strategic options) but in a different enough presentation to feel slightly changed. Also, this plays fine at 2 player count, if you're playing with your spouse/partner like me it might be good for your relationship that there's a little less competition for resources!
My son (age 10) bought this to go along with "The Settlers of Catan" game he had been given. (NB: You cannot play the expansions on their own: you need the original Catan game in order to be able to play them.) This is the fifth edition, but it is also compatible with the fourth edition version of Catan. (The shades of colour are slightly different, but the pieces fit and it doesn't detract from the game.) My son enjoys the fact that there are eight different set scenarios that can be played, as well as the possibility to create your own version; this adds to the interest of the game. Each game takes about 90 minutes with three players or two hours with four players. My son is now saving up to buy another expansion.
This is great addition to the base game. You might need to check YouTube for some additional rules / ways to play though that dont seem to be mentioned in the new booklet that comes with this expansion pack. Highly recommend if you like Catan! Mighty Ape service and shipping time was impeccable as always.
This is a great expansion of an already great game. It gives you many more scenarios to play out. Each game can last between 1-2 hours as you rush to be the first to explore different areas and collect differant resources. The addition to boats in this seafarers expantion adds another dynamic to the game. It now contains a pirate as well as a robber and extra point for being the first to reach new islands. It has keep my family of four entertained throughout lockdown.
Quality materials have again been used to make the pieces tough enough to endure regular playing. The rules booklet is clear with plenty of examples of how to incorporate the expansion kit into the original main game. Although you are expanding the game, the time it takes to play is not really changed. We were so enjoying the concept of sailing, and Fog islands, that the first time we played we actually hadn't realised that one of us had reached the winning number of victory points already! The board does take up a bit more of the table surface, and the cost is a factor, but if you love the original Settlers game you will really enjoy the Seafarers expansion too, it's worth it.
It seems like they have photocopied and printed the original booklet, the contrast and the color show that its a poor imitation. The ships and the robber provided are made of plastic(and are of different color than the base catan), unlike the wooden pieces shown in the picture. Overall, not worth it :/
The game is fun and a great addition, with more rules and pieces to add, to the basic Catan once you've played Catan too many time. This particular item from this seller had a crushed box (one side ripped), so it was 1/2 off, WORTH IT, though I didn't know it was damaged when I purchased it. I've seen these cardboard pieces get damaged from a spilled drink, so keep drinks off the table when playing (it was a tipsy adult whom I saw spill their drink into the middle of the hexagons). Love adding gold as a new resource, though really, none of these games explain the concepts of environmental/economic/social impacts of the resources. Maybe someone could come up with a cooperative version of Catan using the same pieces that rewards conservation instead of expanding ... MoreThe game is fun and a great addition, with more rules and pieces to add, to the basic Catan once you've played Catan too many time. This is the first board game I've loved since playing Monopoly a kid, and out whole family loves it.
