Celestron Nexstar 4SE go-to Telescope.

Lunar observing is impressive with the bundled 25mm lens. I used a fairly low budget 2 x Barlow lens to view the Orion Nebula but having only really observed with 20 x 80 binoculars it is difficult to make a real comparison. I choose the 4SE based on its weight, portability, excellent reviews and GOTO capability. Most of my observing is done from my VERY light polluted backyard smack in the middle of Washington DC. I knew that I wasn't going to be looking at faint galaxies and nebulae with this, but there are plenty of brighter objects such as double stars, carbon stars, messier objects and of course planets that would keep me busy enough, but which also would be nearly impossible to locate without GOTO due to light pollution. The 4SE has been a joy to use! It is light (relative to my dob, it is half the weight) and I can actually bring it outside fully assembled in one trip. Alignment goes very smoothly for me and was accurate enough to put my target in the field of view. Since I take pride in knowing some of the sky, I was able to do alignment based on stars that I identified, so I have not used the other options yet. The optics were clear and I had great views of Jupiter, the Pleiades, the Hyades, and despite horrendous sodium light pollution, the Orion nebula. If you are looking for a grab and go with GOTO capability, or an excellent city/light polluted area scope I recommend this without reservation. If you are looking for your first telescope, do take seriously advice on weight and bulkiness when weighing the pros and cons of larger aperture scopes. While I am happy with my 8" dob, it is heavy and bulky and is now used only when I head out to darker sites. My 4SE is my primary for use at home and will actually fit in the car for camping trips (which sadly my 8" won't).

A nights intensive usage, I could here the 8xAA's start to dry out of juice. Also as I'm into astro-photography, I have today bought a T adapter and T ring for my Nikon DSLR to attach to the rear of the scope. I would definitely recommend this scope for a beginner to intermediate. I would suggest for more advanced users to save money until they have enough for the 8" version to be able to see all the distant objects in the database.

SUPERBLY SOLID GOTO MOUNT AND SCOPE. PERFECT FOR GRAB AND GO!!
16 November 2021

Excellent optics! A great sized grab and go scope! This will go where my larger scopes won't or I won't want to pack up 150 pounds of gear. So this will be a 'frequent flyer.' I've not done more with the mount yet other than power it up and get the feel for it in the house. It is a very stable mount for its size. Initial images sans alignment just for a look through the optics showed zero image shift, both the moon and Jupiter displayed chromatic free images and Jupiter's belts really popped. I would expect, owning about five Celestron GoTo mounts of various sizes, that this will be as exceptional as they are!

I have been using a celestron evolution 8 telescope with a separate wedge since 3 years. Ive had two main issues with that scope.Firstly its heavy and bulky. together with wedge, it weights 27 kgs (60 lbs). I could bear the weight first few weeks but later on, when the first excitement is gone, the scope became a house furniture which I used few times a year for taking photos of moon through open windows.Second, it has field curvature up to a degree I could not bear with when I take lunar photos. If I focus the center of the moon, the edges would be blurry and vice versa. With this nexstar 4se, both problems are gone.I lost a bit of aperture but the moon, the sun and few planets are so bright that a little dimming is not a big issue for me. I can almost focus clearly on all disc of moon so my lunar photos look better.Weight is only 10kg (22 lbs) with powerbank and accessories. its a grab and go scope. It comes with me when I go camping. I will sell my 8 SCT.So happy so far

This is a superb piece of kit. Easy to set up and use (just wish the clouds would do one!). They say that the best scope is the one that you can have with you. This is light weight enough to put in the back of the car and take to your chosen viewing point. Set up took me about 10 mins and I was viewing the sky. I'm currently holidaying near York, with my scope, hoping for a break in the clouds!

[Rewarded Review] Good Price Point for First Telescope
22 December 2022

I own this scope, bought it here (B&H) and I am happy with purchase. My first scope was a cheap department store scope and I wish now I had not wasted that money and just started with the 4SE. It is easy to setup, easy to use and has a load of features that can take you into astrophotography. (which is a blast) If your looking for your first scope, do not be afraid to jump into one of these SE series. There is plenty of software to help you learn the night sky and this scope will have you looking at planets and the moon all night. Even some deep sky observing can be done with the 4SE. Practice with the included eye piece and do some research before buying more eyepieces and you will save some cash as well.

Worst purchase i ever made. Bought as a Birthday gift and was expecting to give as gift before i left out of town. Order was delayed and delivered while i was away. I had my neighbor hold it and when i returned i realized that a similar gift was already given. So i thought i would return it and get a refund to get my nephew something else he was wanting. Bestbuy would not give me a refund a said it was past the 15day policy. It was 2 days past. I spoke with the manager and he told me i should of purchased a special membership that would allow me to return past 15 days. So this will be the last buisness i will be doing with these hacks. Totally unprofessional

Very nice telescope for the price. After seeing the lower price i decided to buy this telescope. I have always wanted to own a maksutov or a schmidt cassegain telescope. And at this price it was definitely a good buy for a new telescope with this type of optics. So on to the features of this telescope it has amazing views of Jupiter and Saturn. I have yet to view the moon because of it being a new moon, as of writing this. I was also able to view the orion nebula and it looked ok. Unfortunately in the world of telescopes you, if your serious like me, need 2 telescopes one being a planetary telescope, such as this one, then a reflector telescope to pull more light in to get those great views of deep sky objects. Now lets talk about the skyalign feature, because this is where this telescope really shines. Skyalign is very nice to use because you dont need to know anything about the stars. You simply follow the directions on the keypad and away you go. The only trouble i had was getting the telescope right on the target that i wanted to look at, but it was very close. All I had to do was move right and down a few degrees. Im sure with time i will get it figured out. Also the quaility is spot on with this telescope. It has a nice sturdy mount and the telescope is built nice also. There are some plastic parts but nothing that takes away the quality of this telescope. You also get a nice 25mm plossl eyepiece with this telescope this seems to be very rare these days as most companies have started giving cheaper eyepieces with their telescopes. Even celestron gives out cheaper eyepieces with most of their refractor telescopes. Lastly if i were going to recommend any accessories i would recommend some type of power source for this telescope because 8AA batteries will not last long in this telescope because it does alot of moving around from target to target which will drain the batteries after a couple to three times of use. Buying batteries over and over will get expensive!

So far so good...Ive only used it for a day just to see the moon and it was relatively easy.Setup was pretty easy: just 5 or 6 screws. The one bad thing is you need a flat head screw driver to open up the battery compartment. Not because there is a screw holding it in place but because its hard to grab and lift out. (unless you have really long fingernails)It wouldve been nice, but it doesnt come with batteries. The worst part of the design (so far) is the hand controller:1) the telephone cord that attaches the hand controller to the telescope is clunky. It has arrow keys, but you cant use them to scroll through the menu. Instead you have to choose from the numbered keys 1-9...Its basically an analog interface. This was probably designed in the 80s like an old push button telephone. Ridiculous. The optics seem fine and well built though. The electronics on the other hand have the design and feel of my 2 year olds push and play toy telephone.
