Fantastic big colander for making stock!

This will make straining stock off so easy - I always make 3 10 litre stockpots worth at a time (makes the same amount of mess so why not?) and straining it is a pain. I've been using a 2 litre conical strainer on a stand, and ladling stock in, leaving it to drain, emptying it, ladling more in, etc, etc. With this colander I can just sit it in a stockpot and ladle a whole stockpot worth in and leave it to drain! My stock recipe: 5 kg chicken wing tips or wings, 4 kg carrots, 5 large leeks, 1 large celery, pepper, bay leaves, garlic, a couple of cloves, stick of cinnamon, and whatever herbs are in the garden. Chop all vegies roughly - don't bother to trim or wash, smash chicken bones with cleaver, put into stock pots, cover with water, bring to boil and simmer for ... MoreThis will make straining stock off so easy - I always make 3 10 litre stockpots worth at a time (makes the same amount of mess so why not?) and straining it is a pain. Strain through coarse strainer (allowing it to drip through with no pressure), then strain through ultra-fine strainer or through cheesecloth. Allow to cool, remove fat from surface. I then boil the whole lot down to a dark brown sticky jelly - I get about a litre and a half of this wonderful concotion, and use it in small quantities to add flavour. Makes gorgeous risotto - just add a tablespoon or two per litre of water. I also use a small lump where ever I would otherwise use a stock cube. I keep it in the fridge and boil it once a week - each batch lasts me for 3 - 6 months.

Good little colander
24 October 2019

Slowly getting rid of plastic items in my kitchen so I was really happy to find this 18/10 stainless steel. Great size. The only thing I would say is that it could do with a few extra holes in the base as liquids are sometimes slower to drain away. However this is easily fixed with a couple of quick shakes!

Good value for money
15 January 2015

After reading all previous reviews I selected the smallest size and I am glad that I didn't choose anything bigger. The colander is of reasonable quality and cheap. The only drawback is that the water doesn't drain too efficiently, slits rather then whole would be a better design. But I didn't want to purchase plastic, so I am happy.

Smaller and less sturdy than expected. But still handy.
3 June 2024

Smaller than I expected. Not as sturdy as I hoped. Slightly awkward shape to fit in the dishwasher. Still, it was worth the money. I'll get a fair bit of use from this colander. Next time, however, I'm getting a bigger one.

Some dimensions would've been helpful
27 May 2010

I needed a big colander, so chose this one over the smaller sizes. But some dimensions would've changed my mind - this thing is enormous! For those thinking of buying one, let me help you: it's 35cm in diameter, 18cm high, and has a circumference of 111cm!! I can't tell you if it's dishwasher safe, as it doesn't fit in my dishwasher. Thank goodness it was so cheap. If you're light on for cupboard space, don't buy this.

Very happy to recommend
12 June 2018

Good product at fair price. Use it when making cheese as stainless steel can be more easily sterilised than plastic. The smaller size is plenty big enough for anything I've used whether straining pasta or cheese making. Like the fact that the base provides a stable rest in the sink.

I needed a colander for my busy restaurant, especially when draining pastas several times each day of the week, the size of this colander is exceptional for the hospitality industry! great price and great quality
