Dior launches its new fragrance Sauvage, with the name originating from the fragrance Eau Sauvage from 1966, although the two don’t belong to the same collection. Sauvage is inspired by wild, open spaces; blue sky that covers rocky landscapes, hot under the desert sun. Dior in-house perfumer, François Demachy, signed this creation. The fragrance is announced as radically fresh, raw and noble at the same time. The composition is reportedly prevalent with carefully selected natural ingredients. Fresh top notes of Calabria bergamot encounter ambroxan, obtained from precious ambergris, and its woody trail. Dior Sauvage comes out in September 2015, advertised by actor Johnny Depp. It is available as 60 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette. The nose behind this fragrance is Francois Demachy. With Christian Dior’s long history, the brand offers some of the most timeless and beautiful fragrances ever composed. Women will love perfumes like J'adore (1999), with it's incredible floral, fruity, and sweet notes. Another favorite perfume is Dior Addict (2002), which features vanilla, floral, and woody accords. Those who enjoy cologne will find masculine scents in products like Sauvage (2015), which offers amber, citrus, and musky accords. Higher (2001) is another popular cologne that features woody, citrus, and aquatic accords.

The factors that I believe measure and define the value of a designer fragrance are as follows: Does it perform with respectable longevity and sillage? Is it mass pleasing? Is it high quality? Is it affordable? A final less important point - what is the presentation like (bottle, atomiser, cap, box)? Whatever you think of Sauvage, it satisfies all these criteria admirably. It has arguably become a victim of it's own success, spawning a host of inspired variants of fresh fragrances that try to capture its spirit. Francois Demachy (the former in-house perfumer at Dior) created a masterpiece in this fragrance, and it became wildly successful for a reason (other than Jonny Depp being the face of the campaign). Not that it has no flaws, but that it is so compelling for what it is and what else you could buy instead at that price point.

I have to admit that I’m a harsh critic of the whole Dior Sauvage line, but I always try to give fragrances their due credit. The bergamot and pepper opening has a sharp but well balanced fresh spiciness. Heading into the middle notes, lavender and geranium create a calming effect for that strong opening while Sichuan and pink pepper, along with vetiver, patchouli, and elemi maintain this fresh, citrusy and more aromatic vibe. The base consists of the ever famous ambroxan note, as well as cedar, and labdanum which all together bring in a bit of a musky woodiness that actually warms up the scent. Once in a while though, you still get a tart peppery sweetness from the earlier notes. The scent is actually really good. Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette is a great scent for a mature man. I purchased this masculine and sexy scent for my significant other and he loves it just as much as I do. When he wears this scent I just can’t get enough of him and how sexy he smells. This is a warm woodsy scent that lasts for around six hours on the skin. The key notes are Bergamot, Pepper and Amberwood. This fragrance can be worn during the day in the office and in the evening on a date night. It is also perfect for all seasons. The bottle is heavy and luxurious and it makes a great addition to my significant others cologne collection on his dresser. This is one of his favorite fragrances coming in second place right next to Giorgio Armani Aqua Di Gio in first place. This fragrance is brilliant and I know I’m gonna ruffle some feathers by saying that. Hear me out: I fall under a small minority that, while I feel the Sauvage DNA is great, it can be both cloying and redundant considering it’s a very easy option for pretty much any man to wear anytime. The EDT is exceptionally loud, and I found it to shout way too loud for me to wear. Projection and silage is great but it is very easy to overspray. Longevity is increased further and the scent itself is toned down slightly in the EDP version. Then came the Parfum - I feel like this can be called Sauvage for Adults. It’s got this whiff of maturity to it, kind of like Sauvage went on a voyage around the world and came back a well seasoned traveler. It’s got this whiff of maturity to it, kind of like Sauvage went on a voyage around the world and came back a well seasoned traveler. Definitely a great option for someone who enjoys the DNA but doesn’t want to be considered an early 20’s clubguy. It’s also a great option for people (like me) who really don’t enjoy Elixir, but would be ok with a happy medium between it and the EDP. This truly is a year round scent and goes extremely well with office wear and jackets/sweater weather in the fall/early winter. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to opt for the large 200ml bottle. I do not regret my purchase at all and hope they retain this version in their lineup for a while. I’d definitely purchase this one again, and highly recommend it for people who used fragrances like Carbon (from Prada’s Luna Rossa lineup) due to wanting a toned down Sauvage DNA while still remaining true to the scent. Longevity is subject to your skin type but I recommend applying after a shower for maximum exposure/results. I get an easy 8hrs with my bottle but the scent bubble gets smaller after about 4hrs in. I know it’s still there because people have complimented me a good 6hrs after application.

Dior Sauvage is a bold and masculine cologne that exudes confidence. The top notes of bergamot and pepper give it a very spicy, refreshing opening, while the heart notes of lavender and geranium provide a floral and slightly sweet middle. The base notes of vetiver, patchouli and ambroxan give the cologne a woody and earthy finish that lingers on the skin for hours. It's a very popular and widely used cologne, and it's not hard to see why. Its strong and masculine scent is perfect for making a statement and turning heads, but it's also versatile enough to be worn in a variety of settings. However, it's worth noting that the projection of this cologne is quite strong, and it can be overwhelming if applied too generously. Some people may find this to be a negative aspect of the fragrance, as it can be overpowering in close quarters or when worn in excess. If you do decide to try Dior Sauvage, it's important to be mindful of the amount you apply and to give the cologne time to dry down before deciding if you need to add more. A little bit of this cologne goes a long way, and it's best to start with a light application and build up gradually if needed. Overall, Dior Sauvage is a high-quality and highly sought-after cologne that is sure to make a lasting impression, but it's important to use it with caution to avoid overdoing it.

In general, I’m not a big fan of Dior Sauvage, but what the company did with the line, from a business perspective, is actually ingenious. Regardless of the fact that it’s not a groundbreaking, unique, or truly creative fragrance, Dior marketed this so well, that it didn’t need to be any of those things to succeed. In my opinion, the scent itself deserves no more than 3/5 stars. I’m giving it 4/5 because although it works better in warmer weather, you can still get away with it all year round, casual and formal occasions, and the performance (on most people) is actually comparable to some EDPs with 6-8+ hours, and at least 2-3 hours of solid projection. Whether you only have a couple fragrances, or you’re trying to build a collection, you can at least test it out to appreciate why it’s so famous, but there are much better options to buy if you want something in the same category. Even if a cologne or perfume is innovative, I find that they can sometimes lose value when people simply buy them because they’re popular. Take it however you want, but Dior Sauvage was made for fitting in, not standing out.

If you want a no brainer cologne, Dior Sauvage EDP, could be the scent you want. I wasn’t too thrilled by the EDT, but perhaps that’s for younger guys. In my mid 40’s but run and lift, a lot of colognes don’t last on my skin. This one definitely does. You can wear this in any season. By far that makes it a exceptional first cologne pick. Yet with the EDP, yes it’s still a synthetic ambroxan bomb. Yet most of the ladies seem to dig it. Although I’m more into Chanel’s Bleu line, that one is less complex than this one. It’s a safer pick, but this one is more fun. The notes in here are bergamot, lavender, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla, and something else. It’s mysterious as it arrives at the beginning of the dry down, yet it screams masculinity. What I love about this is the bergamot, lavender, and the added pepper makes it sing. It’s not a fresh type of cologne, and while some complain “everyone wears this,” it’s because it’s so darn good. The layering of the notes is brilliant. Fall and winter are its best, but spring and summer work also. Projection is massive first few hours. Then it dials down a bit to a skin scent. The pepper stays from beginning to end. That alone is incredible. I love this scent, and while it’s not as warm/fresh as some, I find it unique. Haven’t tried the parfum yet, but that one the Fragrance of the Year from the industry. I find most EDP’s to be better overall performing, so until told otherwise on Sauvage, this one is my go to. Only minor complaint, is that this can’t be dressed down as easily, say as a YSL EDP. That works wearing blue jeans to a suit. The Sauvage EDP leans towards formal, but it can be business casual as well. It’s scent trail is very impressive. That is no doubt due to the ambroxan, but it draws the ladies in. This is a definite buy, and it’s pricing is competitive. With the bottle, you’ll love the atomizer and magnetic cap.

A real powerhouse

As someone who regularly wears the various iterations of this remarkably unparalleled perfume, I would say the EDT is right up there in Dior's Sauvage lineup - perhaps second only to the Elixir, which is in a league of its own really.Where the EDP, for instance, is subtle and smooth and the Parfum woody and calmly warm, the EDT is loud and shouty, the kind of perfume you'd wear if you wanted to turn heads. It's fresher, more pungent and longer lasting than the EDP and others. I found that it benefits from better longevity than many more expensive fragrances which I won't name but are at least 3-4 times more expensive.I usually spray the EDT once onto my neck on a normal day and even 12 hours later, it'll easily transfer onto my hands if I rub my neck. If I'm likely to be in close proximity to people that day, then I'll apply an additional spray on the neck and once on my left wrist. The atomiser is very good and the spray pattern is wide ensuring good coverage. It does however take a little practise at first in ensuring you're getting all the perfume onto your skin and not merely into the air. Each spray also seems to project quite a bit of fragrance, so you'll definitely notice the contents reduce after every 4-5 applications. For younger men I'd definitely recommend the EDT. For everyone else, the EDP may be a better option. I do like both but I'll leave using the EDP for dinner parties and nights out. For everything else, I'll always reach for that 100ml EDT.
