Ciao Bella! by Kate Langbroek

(12 reviews)

Kate Langbroek’s deliciously funny and inspiring memoir about moving to Italy with her family to seek la dolce vita. ‘A wonderful story, beautifully written, filled with heart and humour’ Liane Moriarty (reviewing Ciao Bella! on 3pm Pick Up, KIIS 1065) I wasn’t looking to fall in love. It just happened. There were moments, encounters as fleeting as feelings. Sometimes – tellingly – they emerged from chaos. When Kate Langbroek first dreamed of moving to Italy, she imagined a magnificent sun-drenched pastiche of long lunches and wandering through cobbled laneways clutching a loaf of crusty bread and a bottle of wine, Sophia Loren-style, while handsome men called out ‘Ciao Bella!’ In the stark light of day the dream Kate shared with her husband Peter after an idyllic holiday in Italy seemed like madness. They didn’t speak Italian. They knew no one in Italy. They had four children. Kate also had the best job in the world on a top-rating radio show with her longtime friend, Dave Hughes. But the siren song of Italy was irresistible. This would be the adventure of a lifetime, a precious opportunity to spend more time with their children – Lewis, Sunday, Artie and Jannie – and it came from a deep longing to seize life after they almost lost Lewis to leukaemia. is about having a dream and living it as Kate shares the sublime joys and utter chaos of adapting to a new life in Bologna, what you discover about yourself when you are a stranger in a strange land, and how she fell in love. With a country. Deliciously funny, insightful and often deeply moving, Ciao Bella! is Kate’s love letter to Italy and her family. It is also a glorious reminder of what Italians can teach us about living life to the full – and what really matters when the world goes to hell in a handbasket. This edition includes new bonus content – Kate's recipe for happiness – oh and a recipe for the perfect Ragu alla Bolognese!

A very warm and interesting account of a year spent in Bologna .It is also very topical with the effects of the pandemic on their lives overseas. Dwells more on the emotions of
it all rather than just being overwhelmed by the beauty of her surroundings . For someone who was there for such a short time shows a depth of understanding of the psyche
of italy and italians mor than most . Reminds me of a similar book that George Negus wrote many years ago

I bought the audio edition. What a wonderful journey to experience. Kate Langbroek takes us into her family's lives, and adventures, having transplanted themselves to living
in Italy, travelling to its regions, and other countries. Kate is a wonderful storyteller. Her descriptive writing, words, tone, and excitement take you to that place. However, she
is a realist, and also allows us into the not-so-exciting times and events that present in families. If you enjoy wonderful food, this is another plus for the reader. I didn't want it
to finish. Definitely recommend this book/audio.

A really "Happy, feel-good" book. I just wanted to keep turning the pages to find out what the next adventure was. Kate's experience of living in Italy is honest, funny & heart felt. It was an easy read and left me smiling and wanting to travel and throw myself in the deep end & live life to the full.Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.... Show more

Not for everyone
3 January 2022
This book is very big on food in general and nice restaurants in particular. If you are not interested in these topics, you may not enjoy the book. The author's insights into Italian culture and behaviour are neither original nor profound, and the numerous lists of visitors and friends were meaningless to me -- except to note that she has a LOT of friends. What struck me positively about the book is the way the author and her husband managed their family and themselves (the latter not always successfully). There were challenging times, ranging from lost children to COVID to sulky teenagers, and the adults generally showed great patience, insight, and skill in responding. There are some good lessons there, not presented as such but IMHO important.... Show more
