A decent film stock from Cinestill. Produces fine grain, good colour accuracy, and dynamic range. It has the characteristic halo effect from Cinestill films which you either love or hate. I found it overexposes highlights in bright conditions but will do well in low light. Another con is that the film is expensive for what it is.

I don't even want to write too much so there is enough left for my next purchase. For me personally, it is the best colour film out there.I tested this on sheep, peacocks, chickens, people and a yurt. Not only is it atmospheric, cinematic, captures warm tones beautifully, high dynamic range rarely losing details, subtle but brilliant halation, very versatile - it is an all round brilliant film.It reminds me of an old VHS movie.

I'd been looking forward to getting my hands on some of this for a long time (well it felt like forever), along with the entire analogue community...The proof is in the shooting of course and the 400D was an absolute cracker. The weather spirits offered up some magical light on a sunny November afternoon in Trafalgar Square (always take the weather with you), after the autumnal rain had passed over. For me the rendering of the 400D sits somewhere in between Portra and Ektar, which is a winning combination. It's a look that I think could suit my cityscapes really well, though I'm really excited about its potential for portraiture. It's not cheap but definitely worth every penny!

I've shot 2 rolls of 400D. I was very disappointed with the first roll I shot. Most of the time I loved the results. But I shot some sunset photos and they were horrible. The sunset itself was very pale with pastel yellows, pastel oranges and pastel pinks. Cinestill 400D rendered these calls as pale green. The graduation of colors was not present in the photos. All other photos were awesome. Great detail in shadows, interesting glow of highlights and light sources. I'm about to shoot a 3rd roll, but I plan to do night shots.
This film offers a great combination of a flexible ISO, strong colours and ability for the famous Cinestill glow (halation) around light source. I prefer this to 800T as the colour cast is more warm/neutral. These qualities do come at a cost however, and is currently the same or more expensive than Portra 400 (when in stock!). That being said, I have not had a bad roll with it yet with far more ‘keepers’ so maybe it is a good investment!
I bought this, my first roll, for a wedding. The weather was overcast and the colours a little muted. The remainder of the roll excelled in bright sun, where primary colours really pop on the image. I didn't notice any halations on my outdoor shots. I did notice the grain which is quite fine, giving good detail.
Tried a few rolls of 400D (D is for 'Dynamic') and was impressed with, strangely enough, the dynamic range of the colour. In bright daylight this film is excellent but I have used it in low light situations with longer shutter speeds. In low light colours are still renedered in the dark sections of the image. Lighting shows up with a red halation which, once you realise it will be there, can be used to effect. The cost is quite prohibitive, I would only really use it for some serious work from now on.
Only the second roll I've shot. Interesting results. Nice colors. Yes, halation - but not onerous, just a slight highlighting sometimes which can enhance. The opportunities for color images is not quite here yet in my area; still rather drab brown. But, am eagerly looking forward to another month or so when the garden colors emerge. I'm betting this film will work beautifully with them.
Honestly you just never know what to expect unless you try something, and Cinestill 400D surprised me! It has this really beautiful warmth to the images without it being too much. It handles changing conditions really well, and has very fine grain with fantastic perceived sharpness. Yes it's more expensive, but this Californian alternative to Portra 400 is worth trying if you're after high fidelity 'vintage vibes' on film.Examples taken on the Nikon FM2 at EI400 with 50mm f/1.8.
i have tried a lot of different rolls of film but this one is by far my favourite. the tones that this film give are unmatched, such a perfect balance during the daytime and nighttime. skin tones look perfect and it gives light sources that slight glow that cinestill 800T traditionally gives. such a versatile roll of film and could easily be a substitute for cinestill 800T. as a matter of fact, i’d personally use this roll over it. i’m able to use this roll for shooting during the day and then save some shots for a nighttime shoot as it’s just perfect all around.
