The pigments adhere excellently and are highlighted very well, even without fixative. Layering of several layers of colour without saturation effect is possible. Effortless smudging with the fingers on the velvety surface is very gentle on the fingers. The velvety surface is unique: coarser-grained than velour paper, softer than sandpaper. This opens up completely new possibilities for the artist. Very soft shadings, like fine lines, or precise details can be realised. The consumption of pigments is 30 to 40 % less than with conventional sandpaper. The paper is 100% natural, an organic surface made of vegetable cellulose without the addition of chemical abrasives. The less rough surface also produces very little pastel dust when working. Pastelmat paper can also be used for wet techniques, with water-based paint or denatured alcohol-based paint.
