Blended in over bleached roots
I used this to color my bleached hair back to more my normal color. I selected one shade darker than my natural color and dyed it twice about a month apart. It faded relatively quickly after the first time but the color held much better the second time. Itβs been several months. It has faded but it matched my out growth very well and my hair no longer has the over bleached look at the end. It looks more like highlights. It used to be very bleached looking. I wanted something that wouldnβt be too damaging to my hair and wouldnβt add too much to my natural color. I canβt speak to it covering grays. I had tried to get the bleached done in a salon but it over processed abs gave me hot roots. This was much cheaper, faster, and looked better.... Show more

Great new formula, but much darker that box
I have been using this brand haircolor for years, trying different shades. I recently went through chemo therapy and lost all my hair. Since itβs grown back in its come in with a lot of grey. I have naturally medium brown hair. It is in excellent condition and thought I would color it with this new formula. So many reviews state the new formula is not as good as the old, I love the new formula. No burning on application, no hot roots, more even coverage. Many reviews also stated that the sheets are much darker than reflected on the box. For this reason I purchased suede light brown. It is so dark! Thankfully I donβt mind dark hair on myself. This is the only negative. My hair feels so soft and fluffy. And it was great at covering my greys! I will definitely purchase ... Hot roots when using on new growth
Pros: Does not seem to damage hair or cause hair shedding! Huge! Cons: Lightens natural color slightly. Brassy! 5g mostly but not fully covered gray. TBD: How long the gray coverage lasts. Decided to try this to blend the gray at my roots. I have prob ~20% gray (among my natural brown-black) that I like to tint light/med brown as a way of adding highlights to my hair. Typically use a beauty store brand demi permanent color with 10 volume developer and that works great - it actually permanently stains my gray so that I only have to to recolor my roots every 4-6 weeks, and my lengths never look over-saturated. However it consistently makes my hair fall out like CRAZY whenever I use it so decided to try Natural Instincts 5g in looking for an alternative. I used this ... I used this only on a couple inches of my roots on virgin hair - it was quick to apply since it wasn't to thick and didnt cause ANY additional hair loss or scalp irritation, yay! BUT, I'm not liking the result. It gave me hot roots - the dark hair at my roots is now lighter than the dark hair that wasn't colored. That should never be the case with a demi perm color. Instead of having tinted gray, the result is muddy, and not a color I like either - the 5 "golden brown" is a bit too green for my pref. It only very slightly lightened my natural dark color, but I didn't want it lightened at all esp considering I only do my roots. The hunt for an alternative continues. If I ever tried this again I would try a redder or cooler brown vs golden (though I like golden in other brands) and perhaps go darker in hopes the gray would fade to a lighter color adter a few washed and my natural dark wouldn't be affected.... It's OK
My hair is naturally a medium brown, but I prefer it darker. Unfortunately, even permanent color fades after about a month of washing, so I figured this would be a gentler alternative. I will say it smells much better than other dyes I've used. It has a pleasant fruity-floral aroma. If you're sensitive to scent, be aware that this scent lingers on your hair after rinsing. I bought shade 3 Ebony Mocha Brown Black, which I don't see here, but it's the shade just before soft black. It does the job. This color had red undertones on me, so keep that in mind. Indoors it appears almost black, but in natural sunlight you can see it's brown. However, that could just be how it came out on me based on the color I started with. My hair feels a little bit dry, but not terrible. ... MoreMy hair is naturally a medium brown, but I prefer it darker. Overall, it's not the best dye I've ever used, but if you're looking for a non permanent option and don't want to lighten your hair, I'd say go for it.... Show more

Never again!
I used to color my hair with Clairol Natural Instincts about 10 years ago and never had an issue. With a special event coming up I decided to freshen my hair up with some color. Upon reading the instructions it seemed as if the product had improved since I last used it. I bought two packages, but one bottle covered my shoulder-length hair just fine. However, after applying and rinsing out the product as instructed, I noticed that my hair didn't feel very good. Back in the day it used to leave my hair super silky and soft, like a model in a shampoo commercial. But the real horror happened after I dried my hair and realized that the color I got was NOT the color on the box! I selected #4 dark brown to get a Hersheys dark chocolate color. Instead my hair came out looking like kona coffee grounds in water (aka, almost black). It looks completely unnatural and now I'm trying to desperately get it to wash out early. (In the shower for the first wash since coloring, my hair felt like even more of a bird's nest than when I rinsed the dye out. Bleh!) I have now sworn off hair dye for the rest of my life. Hopefully by the time I get to the special event this weekend some of it will have washed out.... Show more

No ammonia in this hair colour. π
This is my favourite home hair dye kit. My only criticism is that I wish there were a few more lighter shades to choose from. I was drawn to Clairol natural instincts due to the fact it has no ammonia or added parabens and it has 80% naturally derived ingredients. The bonus of all this is a product that has no nasty chemical smell. It covers stubborn greys and I was pleased to note that I had no harsh root line. I would say that I get at least four weeks value out of the product, which is pleasing given it is semi permanent. I have long hair and the conditioner is quite nourishing with a pleasant coconut and aloe vera scent. Happy to recommend.... Show more

perfect for grey coverage
So easy to use and smells great! Previously, Iβve gone to a salon and had my hair colored a dark neutral brown/soft black. Needed something to cover my light brown roots and greys. This was perfect! I bought the medium brown shade and it covered all of my stubborn greys, contrary to what other reviews may tell you. It blended perfectly with my previous dye job(I only dyed the roots/blended a little) I topped it off with the Kristen Ess hair gloss in Bittersweet to tie it all together. Perfect match. My hair looks and feels great. (Photos are taken in different lighting, but it looks fantastic) The Medium Brown color is one step above an intense black, great for people who donβt want to go too dark.... Show more

success!
This worked really well for me! I have medium brown hair with dark blond balayage that had gotten really brassy and I was sick of trying to keep it toned. I applied 5A (medium cool brown) to the bleached ends and 4 (dark brown) to my natural roots and ended up with a really natural-looking dark brown that still has a little bit of dimension on the ends. I also have a few grays and it covered those fully. My hair is extremely thick, and 2 bottles saturated it fully at this length. (I applied it to dry unwashed hair per package directions.) The before and after pics were a few days before and about a week afterβ¦I tried to get similar lighting but the βafterβ does look a bit darker in person. In that time, Iβve fully shampooed it twice (sulfate-free), applied a little bit of shampoo around my hairline 2 or 3 more times, and wet/conditioned it daily. It has faded a little (as expected) but nothing crazy, like it doesnβt just wash out right away or anything. It did not dry my hair out and my waves have actually looked really nice every day since Iβve used it. It irritated my scalp a little bit, but I have very sensitive skin so thatβs to be expected, and itβs definitely not among the worst offenders out of the dyes Iβve used, like it didnβt break me out elsewhere on my face/body and it didnβt smell notably bad either. I will absolutely repurchase this and I may try a dark cool blonde on the ends next time to see how that looks.... Show more

The ash colors work great tone brassy highlights
I have naturally almost black hair and tried to have some dark brown highlights put in, something subtle just to lighten it up a bit. They turned out to be brassy red-orange. The stylist toned the highlights and they looked better at first but it washed right out. So I used the 6A light cool brown to tone them again and I was hoping to tone but not completely cover them so they would still be visible but more of a dark brown vs orange. I put it on for the full 20 minutes and it turned out perfectly. Itβs hard to see in the photo but in person you can see the highlights, they just look more natural now. I donβt know if it will completely wash out eventually or not but Iβm glad I found something that worked. I recommend if youβre doing something similar to go lighter ... I recommend if youβre doing something similar to go lighter than your intended result because cool/ash tones do cancel out brassiness but they tend to also come out darker than the warmer or neutral colors do. I was hoping to have level 4 or 5 brown highlights so I used 6 ash and it turned out perfect. So for under $10 itβs worth a shot... Show more

Wonderful!
This is beautiful hair dye! I haven't dyed my hair/had it highlighted for 2 years, since I had my baby, and I wanted to do something new but wasn't wanting to spend $200 anymore to get my hair highlighted and lowlighted. I was hesitant with this dye because some reviews said it didn't cover their old dye, or bleached ends, that they turned green, etc. But I decided to try it considering it's demi-permanent dye! I absolutely love it! I had bleached and toned highlights that had grown out for 2 years at the bottom 6 inches of length on my hair. I used the 6N light natural Suede Brown color. I used a red tinted shampoo just on my ends to "fill" the hair before the coloring to hopefully negate any green tones that could come out of the old bleach. It has a beautiful ... It has a beautiful rich tone and isn't 1 dimensional. I still have some nice golden tones and highlights in my hair and it blended my bleached bottom highlights beautifully. I love it! The smell isn't bad or overwhelming. The included conditioner is nice and my hair is soft! I personally think this is a wonderful substitute to going to the salon, and I had no issues with the dye, application or results! The only thing I would say, is I could have done with 2 boxes over just 1. My hair is VERY thick, naturally curly and long! So to be on the safe side I would buy 2 boxes, I will next time! I also would section your hair and apply instead of just covering the head for a better saturation and to make sure you get an even and non-patchy result! I love it!... Show more
