Coates Willow Thick Charcoal 9mm Pack Of 12 Sticks
Back in the 1960s Percy Coate began experimenting with the willow he grew to make drawing charcoal. Although it took some years to perfect the technique, by the 1970s he was finally ready to share the new Coates Willow Charcoal with the world. Percy's grandfather, Robert Coate started in business in 1819 as a 'withy merchant', buying and selling local willow crops. Today Coates is still very much a family concern with members of the family involved in all aspects of the business. For many years now Coates willow charcoal has been recognised as the best quality willow charcoal in the world and they are eager to maintain that reputation in the years to come.

After traveling the country in the 70's doing charcoal and pastel portraits (charcoalpencil and pastels) my oil painting technique and study of the Masters encouragedthe more painterly quality of Willow Charcoal. I remain in favor of the Coates WillowCharcoal and Sennelier Soft Pastels due to my preference to paint even withdry media.

I use it for grilling steaks and burgers. Oh yes, I also use it for sketching.

First of all, the packaging was great, nothing broken. The charcoal itself is my new favorite. It's the darkest I've found, lifts easily for lights, is soft enough to blend perfectly. This is all I will use from now on. I purchased every size available and love them all. Thank you Coates, and Dick Blick for perfect packaging.

I purchased this reasonably priced charcoal to augment my current and old collection before I start my next drawing classes. It will be sufficient for all students to experiment with, and I'm happy with the quality!
These are higher quality slicks, better and smoother application, better results
The thin charcoal sticks (which are more than half the box) are unusable. The sticks are so thin, you can barely hold them & it snaps if you try sketching with them.
I use this vine charcoal almost exclusively for all of my charcoal drawings. It's got the right texture and softness that I've come to trust and rely on. I've tried many other brands of vine(willow) charcoal and this one suits my needs best. The thinner sticks tend to be extra brittle and break but the thick sticks are just right for the type of drawing I do. The only other brand that has equalled Coates is Daler-Rowney willow charcoal. Coates is definitely one of the best and most reliable brands of vine charcoal out there.
Exactly what I needed for my daughter and get requirements for her college art class.
Just started a drawing class and these have been great to work with. I'm a real beginner to art classes.
I'm an oil painter so I have not had the experience with charcoal as others might have. However, I've used charcoal enough to know what I do and don't like, and I've been frustrated in the past with different types of charcoal and different brands. Last time I needed to purchase charcoal I experimented yet again with another brand. I got Coates Premium Willow Charcoal Thick. I love it , and my experimenting is over. This is the one I will purchase from now on.
