I have 4 Roadtrip LXE grills and they have worked great except for typical bottom tray rusting out in which they are no longer available. I decided to purchase a ne Roadtrip 285 and very disappointed. The lid doesn't close all the way because it hits the grates causing strain on the hinges. I can see them hinges breaking soon opening and closing the lid while cooking. You can't even lock the latch. You must remove the grates in order to close the lid all the way. Design flaw or quality control? A friend of mine had the same issue. Come on Coleman!

Clean up is pretty easy due to the pan that sets under the grates that can also be filled with water for moisture while cooking. Suggest getting the optional hose to use with a regular propane tank unless you want to carry a lot of portable gas bottles with you.The sliding shelves on the side are pretty small and partially blocked by the handles on the side of the grill making the useful space pretty limited when extended. The hood lock is flimsy and comes unlocked easily, thus spilling the grates out when being moved on the wheels in a vertical position. On a side note, the more and more that I use and get familiar with this little Coleman travel Grill, I have to admit I am falling in love with it. I stripped the *Cast Iron grates* , cleaned them and re seasoned them to my liking. I also purchased a hose adapter to run a 20 lb bulk tank but have not used it yet. I also did a little research and there are aftermarket grille inserts that I can purchase to accommodate breakfast with either a full griddle or a half griddle as well as a " stovetop burner Style insert" for resting your Coleman percolator coffee pot on. Then, to sweeten the deal even more this grill actually folds down and Tucks right away in the back of my minivan either standing up vertically or laying down flat. I plan on building a removable shelf to go over the grill in the storage position so I can still utilize the space in the back without having awkward angles to rest stuff on. Coming from a guy that has used various charcoal grills and split burning smokers, I love the convenience of this little propane grill and and it has received a huge thumbs up on my YouTube channel. I do plan on buying the grill inserts at a future date.

I bought the grill because I wanted something portable as I trailer to horse shows with my family. The grill has a great design for portability. I love the stand and the shelves that slide out to make it an all in one cooking station. Things I don’t like; the instructions for assembly are not very clear. There in a chain on the legs for something and no mention at all as to what it’s for. It doesn’t get hot enough when used in cold weather. Also this new design doesn’t have a drip tray like the old design to catch the grease. All the grease goes in to the water tray and you have to let the grill cool down to remove it so then clean up is not easy.
This is our second traveling Coleman. The other one still works but is left at our camping property. Looked at a few other brands but they fell short of what the Coleman has mastered in the camping world. Loved all the color options. We went with orange. The three burner feature and side tables are such a great upgrade. This one seems a bit sturdier as well. Overall we are happy with our purchase.
I would not recommend this or any product from this company. Coleman was the brand for outdoor gear. They always had replacement parts for their stoves, lanterns and coolers. The new company saying is "sadly we do not have replacement parts for this grill. I would urge anyone looking at this item to read the question section below. Repeatedly people are reporting issues with the rivets in the lids failing, handles breaking and the regulators failing. I personally have had the rivets fail on one side of the lid which I repaired with sheet metal screws and now the regulator is bad. A company who sells me a $300 grill and then says sorry there is no solution after only using the grill for 2 years is not someone I would recommend. If you fall down the rabbit hole with ... I bought this grill to replace one of the older two burner road trip grill's that did not heat evenly ie was always cold in the center and really didn't produce enough heat for some cooking. This three burner 285 version heats much better and evenly but that's about where the positive advantage ends. Unfortunately the 285 is a major pain to clean up after use especially when cooking high grease items like bacon. The water bath catch tray was a good idea in theory but even though I have carefully leveled the unit before cooking much of the grease dripping miss falling into the tray. Consequently the grease ends up all over the bottom of the interior and is difficult to clean due to trying to clean under and around the burner on a surface with all the ventilation ... I haven't had a problem with the lock as most have noted as of yet I did have a problem maintaining the temperature, there seemed to be drastic temperature peaks and changes and that was with only one burner in use (I do mostly indirect grilling) and using 2 different propane tanks. But I've never used a grill this tiny before since moving into an apartment so it could be that and it was super windy out. Other than that, it is a good little grill. I didn't find the clean up entirely troublesome as some have noted. The water pan you just pull out slowly and then tilt to dump into a trash bag, that was fairly easy to do without a mess being made and also very easy to wipe down with a basic dish sponge. The grates I pulled out and soaked in water and dish soap for 10 mins and everything cleaned off super easy with a sponge. Keep in mind that these are porcelain coated cast iron grates, so you do not need to season them, they are already non stick. To my surprise- I was able to fit 10 drumsticks on the left side and 4 hot links in the middle and 3 veggies kabobs on the far right all at the same time. With a small mesquite wood chips foil pack in the top middle section-for our nice smokey flavor. I was actually impressed with how much I could fit on this tiny lil grill! I even did a chicken marinade on a second day- that made a mess and looked like it was going to be a pain to clean off afterward but nope! i soaked the grates and it all wiped off easy in my kitchen sink. This fits well on my tiny balcony, doesn't take up a lot of space even with side tables. Overall a very easy setup once you get used to having a water pan to fill and careful not to spill anything out pan while grilling, which I've never had in a grill before.
