Continental Grand Prix 5000 S Tr 27.5" Folding Tyre
The Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR Bike Tire is lighter, faster and supported with stronger sidewalls. Its Tubeless ready (TR) carcass construction is robust and impervious against damage and penetration from foreign objects. The Vectran Breaker is spun from liquid crystal-polymer to create a multiple-thread thermoplastic yarn. This partially crystalline fabric is more cut-resistant than aramid and its tensile strength is five times higher than that of steel. A Vectran Breaker is lighter, more flexible and effective against cuts than a comparable nylon breaker, without affecting rolling resistance. Lazer Grip, to make you one with the road. The lazered micro profile structure expands over the tire's shoulder and provides outstanding cornering. Active Comfort Technology (ACT) takes a revolutionary approach in cycling; embedded in the tire construction to absorb vibrations and smoothens your ride. Black Chili Compound features special synthetic rubbers combined with proven natural rubber to high-performance tread mixtures, to optimize rolling properties and grip. Designed to be compatible with hooked and hookless rims, this new standard in road tubeless ready technology will allow you to ride faster, more comfortable and with increased puncture protection.

From 1984 thru today, I’ve installed/ridden countless tires. This iteration of the GP5000 are by far the best of the best, specifically the 650b. Made even better at LevelNine’s value price. Installation on a variety of rims is super easy for my old weak hands. Pressures between 45-60 psi turn your bike into a confident corner carver, while smoothing bad, broken pave.’ Praise to Conti for their attention to the 650b platform, (a boon for us 5’ nothing riders), please never stop cranking these out. I bought these tires for my gravel bike based on the data from bicycle rolling resistance .com. I would say these are excellent multi surface tires. Their on pavement performance has already been established. It's their off road manners that surprised me the most. Once you dial in the psi for your setup, these tires absolutely fly off road. Obviously these road tires won't out perform dedicated gravel, CX, or XC mtb tires on the rough chuncky stuff but for sure they will out perform those tires on class 1 - class 2 ish surfaces. Think Tour of the Battenkill or BWR San Diego circa 2019. These are my first tubeless tires. Using them on my Specialized Roubaix Sport, which came with tubeless ready rims. They were fairly easy to mount (I do have many years of experience with clinchers), and adding sealant was straightforward. Mounting them is definitely more work than clinchers. The payoff so far is I have had no flats, and it seemed I would get one a month or so with clinchers, mostly due to glass or other road debris. They have one small drawback and one major one. The small one is that they are noisy, I would guess 3X as noisy as the Continental clinchers they replaced. The major drawback is that if they get low on pressure, and you make a turn, they will lose traction and washout, and down you go. I found that out the hard way, fortunately at low speed in a parking lot. But it happened in a flash with no warning, so beware. I run fairly low pressures, which I did after researching rolling resistance. Lower pressures (40 frt/60 rear) give a better ride and subjectively seem to be faster than the much higher pressures I used to ride. If you run lower pressures like me, just be very aware that it is unsafe to let them get too low.

The Continental 5000 GP S TR tires left me feeling deflated. I decided to switch from Panaracer GravelKings because, though I dream of epic gravel adventures, I mostly ride the mean roads of my city. I thought that a road specific tire might last longer and roll faster, but I didn’t want to give up on tubeless tires and the confidence that goathead thorns weren’t going to ruin my Sunday morning fun. I shelled over the inflated price of $103 per tire and had them professionally installed on my DT Swiss 1600 PR rims at my local bike store.Yeah, they look cool, but I soon realized that I needed to pump them up at least every other day. They leak 20 psi every 48 hours. Not a deal breaker, but definitely annoying. They leak 20 psi every 48 hours. Not a deal breaker, but definitely annoying. What made me rotate my thinking that these were not a good purchase was going down hills. When I point my bike downhill and start to pick up speed, I get the very spooky feeling that my front tire is about to slide out from under me. I’ve tried adjusting my psi, but the sensation persists. I now go down hills with my hands firmly on my breaks. I never had that feeling with any other tire I’ve ridden. The latest blow is a flat that left a 1 cm gash in my rear tire –bad luck that can happen to any tire, I know, but now I’ll need an innertube and there goes the advantage of tubeless tires. My 2 cents: There are much better tires at a better price out there. Keep looking.
I got new wheels and the wheel company (FLO Cycling - AS49 Disc front and AS64 Disc rear) specifically recommended these. My LBS didn't have these in stock, so I got something different. Meh. As soon as I found these, I got them and replaced the others. I was concerned about clearance on my road bike but ended up with 28mm, ultimately. WOW - what a difference. They feel great on less than perfect surfaces and have proven to be surprisingly durable, especially when I read other reviews. Knock wood, not a flat since I put them on in June. I've trained, raced and even did some gravel with no issues. It took two tire tools to fit on Shimano WH-6800 rims. Conventional GP-5000's were much easier to fit and remove. Pouring sealant between the narrow tire-rim gap required a steady hand and patience but the tires seated using a standard floor pump. One seated with no manipulation at all. They measure 25mm wide on my rims. Ride is very good at 80psi, 97kg rider + bike. My opinion is that the GP-5000 rubber wears quicker than the Gatorskins I use on other bikes. I'm a fan of the GP-5000 AS-TR for the ride quality and tubeless option. Would buy again.
I've ridden mostly Contis on my road bike for the last 40,000 mi, so these were a no-brainer for my new Parlee dream bike with Enve SES 3.4s. Indeed, puncture resistance has been remarkable with zero flats in first 1400mi on these 28C 5000S TRs, despite the unavoidable glass on Chicago streets. Similarly, the rear tread remains surprisingly intact and without the wear I'd expect by now. As a result, I anticipate that these tires will outlast my normal Conti lifecycle of approximately 2500 mi. And the ride is superb. I would easily give these a full, 5-star review for their performance and durability, particularly considering my 215lbs and the mean streets on which I often ride, except... Unfortunately, I regularly trim away threads from the sidewalls of both front and rear tires, a disturbing problem that indicates an issue extending beyond a single defective tire. [I noticed this tire problem a couple weeks after receiving the bike from my shop, so I do not have any tire packaging that might allow identification of manufacture date or lot number.] The threads shed from a subtle sidewall seam, approximately 5mm above the rim and typically grow to a couple or few inches before I notice them. I have never experienced this issue on any tire on any bike. I trim these close to the rubber due to concern that pulling on the thread too far might compromise the tire. Were it not for this shedding issue, these pricey tires are otherwise worth every penny.
While I haven't had the chance to do more than 2 rides on these tires, my review is going to be based on how these feel while riding, how well they sealed their first puncture, and how easy they were to mount. My first ride on these was with inner tubes because I couldn't locate my tubeless valves and had to order new ones. The ride at about 75psi for the tubes was about as smooth as could be for a 30mm wide tire. I highly recommend this, but with a caveat, which was I got a puncture on my very first ride with these. Thing is though, I didn't find out about the puncture until I saw the tire was flat the next day. So while these tires are still going to be susceptible to punctures, it was nice to know I was able to get home without any bother. Now when I finally got ... MoreWhile I haven't had the chance to do more than 2 rides on these tires, my review is going to be based on how these feel while riding, how well they sealed their first puncture, and how easy they were to mount. Thing is though, I didn't find out about the puncture until I saw the tire was flat the next day. So while these tires are still going to be susceptible to punctures, it was nice to know I was able to get home without any bother. Now when I finally got my valves installed and sealant injected into the tire, said puncture from the previous ride sealed pretty much instantly after sloshing the sealant around. And they seem to be holding their pressure as well, since I got back yesterday from another 21-mile ride, their pressure(about 60psi front and rear) has pretty much remained constant. But obviously, check and inflate before riding. Finally onto the technical side of the experience, and this is what surprises me the most. I bought the previous version of this tire, and while I'm no expert mounting bike tires, I have gotten better lately, but the with the previous version, it was just so incredibly difficult to mount them, that I returned them because I couldn't imagine having to do a roadside tube replacement with them. But these tires are a revelation! I got them mounted in under 10 minutes with one tire lever, and seated with just a cheap track pump that I've had for almost 7 years now, that was old when I got it. No tricks, no soapy water, no cussing. Just one lever for getting the last bit of the tire onto the rim. This is why I recommend buying these tires, this and just how wonderfully smooth the ride is with them. I have a 2022 Roubaix Comp, which is already achingly comfortable, but to have a full on performance tire, fast and smooth, is just a huge plus with all the benefits of tubeless tech built in. If you can swing the price, or get a special, just buy these, especially with the transparent(tan) sidewalls!
I always liked the Continental family of clincher tires but they were late to the tubeless era. The 5000 S TR tire shows that they've caught up and the tire is now my go to choice. First, compared to other TR tires, the Conti's are relatively easy to put on and take off which is a huge advantage compared to other TR tires especially when you get a flat on the road. Second, I ride in NYC and I've gotten one flat after four months which is pretty good compared to the flats I was getting with Conti clincher tires. Third, the tire does lose a bit more pressure over 1-2 days vs. the Pirelli's I was using before. I don't know if that is due to an issue with my wheel, sealant or the tires.
My regular road bike is a TREK Domane, which works just fine with 25mm tyres and tubes. However, at 71 I've invested in a Ribble SLe electric bike to enable me to continue to ride the distances I used to. Nice bike, but unlike the Domane it makes no concessions for comfort, and it is frankly a real bone-shaker!So, I decided to upgrade it from its standard 28mm tubed tyres to the 32mm version of the GP5000 tubeless - my first try with tubeless.Well, it's done the trick, with a very much better ride. Fitting onto Mavic rims wasn't too difficult, they inflated with a standard track pump, and a slight leakage disappeared with a few miles use.So far, I'm a convert!
