I visited the Plymouth R/S branch 2 weeks ago for an arranged sound demo of a few bookshelf speakers, sorted by the brilliant Josh at store, as ever really helpful. The hype is true with these and a bargain at £400 that gave my brilliant Kefs an absolute run for their money in same sound presentation- no mean feat and highly recommended. If you want a great but compact hifi solution dont be put off by the price to separate comparison either- these easily hold their own with £1000 plus amps and associated gear- they are brilliant!

Dali Oberon 5 vs Q Acoustics 3030i vs Q Acoustics 3050iFirst off a bit of back story. I have had the Q acoustics 3030i for around 2 years now (plus the centre channel 3090ci), which I STILL think are excellent value for money @ approx £250/pair. They have good image, good clarity, reasonable dynamics though they run out of puff when driven hard and remarkably punchy bass for a small standmount speaker. However, I wanted more.Having heard friends tower speakers before, I knew the sheer presence, scale and weight they offered cannot be matched by standmount speakers. So, having been pleased with the 3030is, I tried out the 3050is @ approx £500/pair. So, having been pleased with the 3030is, I tried out the 3050is @ approx £500/pair. This was really quite a disappointing move as it turns out; yes they have more weight and scale and improved dynamics but the bottom end is foggy and bloated, and if i'm being perfectly honest the top end/ vocals sounded noticably muffled, almost as if the speaker/singer were reading a large newspaper at the time of recording. I couldnt quite believe my ears and thought this must be a defect, so I ordered another pair - but alas, the same traits were true once again. Things improved when pulling these out a fair way from the rear wall - probably around 60cm - but not to the point of being "good enough", nor was that aesthetically acceptable in my listening room. After much more research, here enter the Dali Oberon 5's @ approx £750/pair.Now then, at first glance you'd not think much of them - small and stylish, an unassuming guest would assume they were built for form over function. But fear not dear listener, the Dali's are a remarkable set of speakers. Lets start with highs & vocals; INCREDIBLE clarity which FAR surpasses even the the Q acoustics 3030is. Very impressive. Rather forward, but not harsh. Very much in balance. Moving onto mids, there is a little more weight here than in the 3030is but not as much as the 3050is. What you'd expect for a speaker of this size. Again very much in balance. Now onto bass; they certainly go down to around 40hz, though they felt less punchy even than the 3030is. However I have a feeling this was due to the 3030is weaker midrange by comparison, thus making them feel very strong down low. The Dalis bottom end is very smooth, and very detailed, never blooming or otherwise getting out of check. Once again, very much in balance. In summary of the frequency range, you guessed it:- Balanced- Articulate- PreciseOther audiophile notes:Imaging; Good. Better than the 3050is, and almost as good as the 3030is (with toe in). Best results were found following manufacturer recommendations of no toe in.Dynamics; Very good. Not quite as good as the 3050is, but close. Totally worth the trade off for the sound quality. Clarity and balance does not decline when pushed hard.Soundstage; Very broad, reasonably high. Offers the most forgiveness for listening position out of the 3 speakers.Scale; Good. Dead in the middle between the 3030is and the 3050is. It feels like it is "almost" what I was looking for! I suppose what you would expect from a large bookshelf/small tower speaker.ConclusionVery happy with these speakers for all of the reasons listed above. Perhaps more importantly however, what I don't like about them is:- I feel that they have "almost" enough scale/weight (which perhaps the larger Dali Oberon 7s would handle better). I would love a bit more, but I am not willing to sacrifice the clarity and balance that these offer, nor am I willing to accomodate the Oberon 7s with their recommended distance to rear wall.- They could be a little taller (or come with a small stand). As I mentioned it is a forgiving soundstage, but there is no denying they sound best with the tweeter at ear level. The difference is small, so not something you should be worried about, and even if you are - buy or build a small stand.- I feel that they could go lower. It is likely that this will improve when they are fully run in, but I do feel that for something 70% larger (by cubic volume) than the 3030is, that they should be able to dig a little deeper. Not a problem for me because I use a subwoofer anyway.MISCELLANEOUS INFOListening room approx 3.5x5m, listening across the narrow side.Amplifier is a Denon AVC-X3700H (tested with and without audyssey XT32).Tested with budget and midrange speaker cable.Usage approx 70% movies and 30% music.Placement approx 22cm from rear wall. Also tested with the Dali Oberon Vokal centre speaker; all of the same observations apply versus the Q acoustics 3090ci centre speaker.

We have had these speakers for a couple of weeks now. They sounded good even when they first arrived, but today, for the first time, after quite a few hours of running in, they totally seduced me. I was listening to a solo classical guitar album and I could hear the player's fingers on the fretboard, and the slight buzz of the lower strings. If I closed my eyes it was as if he was sitting right in front of me (and I have been to small gigs where I have sat right in front of the guitarist, so I know what it sounds like!). Sound is very subjective, and different people like different things. The main thing is, does the music, be it live or recorded, engage you? Having tested these speakers in a Richer Sounds demo room, I was blown away by the quality, especially considering their relatively small size and reasonable price. Happily, the sound put out by these speakers fills my living room at home just as effectively as it did in store! I have it paired with a Cambridge Audio AXR-85 amplifier and mostly listen to music on my Pro-Ject A1 turntable, it all works together very well for a solid and reasonably priced hi-fi setup. Even music streamed through Spotify (via the amp's bluetooth) sounds excellent with these speakers. The clarity is such an impressive step up from the decent pair of active speakers I was using previously. A couple of weeks ago I visited my local (Maidstone, Kent) store looking for a pair of stand-mount speakers, amp and accessories to use with a newly purchased LG oled TV in my sitting room. I didn’t want a soundbar aa I have future plans to addd a turntable. After speaking with one of the staff, Ben, I opted for a pair of Dali Oberon 1s, Tangent Ampster BT II some stands and cables. This isn’t the first time I’ve purchased from Richer Sounds and I heartily recommend them to anyone looking for good advice, quality products and superb service.
These speakers are fully living up to the outstanding reviews that led me to consider them. As expected, their performance has blossomed after a few days of breaking in with regular use and I'm now convinced I made the right choice. They're delivering very nice sound throughout the frequency and instrument range (I listen to both jazz and rock), but what I like most is that they seem to have a distinct symphonic characteristic. By this I mean that their sound presents as a well integrated mix of its different components, rather than the high, medium and lower frequency sounds appearing excessively separate from each other (the latter happened with some other products I compared the Oberons with). As expected, their performance has blossomed after a few days of breaking in with regular use and I'm now convinced I made the right choice. The result is that with this speaker-pair you're listening to the music, not them, and that's the way it should be. They're working well in a fairly large room, and their size and the walnut finish make them look discrete but very smart (see my photos). The Oberon 5s are enhancing my musical life. Thanks to the staff at Richer, Newcastle for the excellent help they gave me, and for the very fast delivery.
'Boyo' am I happy that I chose these speakers to sit on my desktop, alongside my computer even though their position is rather unconventional. My Bowers and Wilkins were over 10 years old and had suffered damage to the tweeters during rough handling at a teenage party resulting in a rasping sound in the higher frequency register. Small and compact my Dali Oberon 1 speakers emitted a sound that was pure bliss, making the lyrics of songs I had previously missed, crystal clear. The light oak finish matched my desktop - a deep brown or even black grille might have improved the looks rather than the grey - but then again the function of a speaker is the sound and not the looks (perhaps a lesson that one should buy in store not online). Nevertheless I am thrilled with ... More'Boyo' am I happy that I chose these speakers to sit on my desktop, alongside my computer even though their position is rather unconventional. Nevertheless I am thrilled with these crisp desktop speakers- for both classical and rock music. If music be the food of life, play on Dali Oberon 1! (Apologies to Shakespeare).
Richer Sounds Milton Keynes were really helpfull letting me try these out against other speaks I was considering, all set up on the Cambridge CXA61 I was looking to buy with. These Dali's won out as they handled lyrics so beautifully. Others had a bit more bass or pressence, but I just kept coming back to that vocal clarity. On the day I actually took the risk and "upgraded" to the Opticon 1s without hearing them. Unfortunately I hadn't realised they had even less bass than the Oberon 1's so was a little underwhelmed in that department. Richer Sounds were really helpful and swapped them for the Oberon 1's I loved so much, even though I had used them for a few days.Set up at home the Oberon 1's sound great in my small home office. Just enough bass to give them some drive in this small room, while still having that lovely lyrical clarity. Personally I think they actually look better than the Opticon 1's as well, particularly in the Dark Walnut finish.
