Each watercolor pan is hand-poured. Hand pouring pans is incredibly labor-intensive and offers the purest form of professional watercolor half pans. It takes three to four pours over several months of drying to produce each half pan of DANIEL SMITH Watercolor. This exciting blend mixes Quinacridone Rose and Ultramarine Blue. The blue settles as the rose floats, creating a vibrant, dimensional purple. For those artists who "always mix their own purples", this unique, otherwise unattainable separation is worth exploring. Juxtapose Rose of Ultramarine with pure Phthalo Blue RS for fun and effect.

DS Phthalo Blue Turquoise

Nice sort of cyan color, turquoise with more dilution. Definitely more green than Phthalo Blue GS. Local underwater sea color tends to be more green. Haven't experimented to much with mixes yet but you could probably get a good transparent undersea color with a transparent yellow or maybe even Phthalo Green YS. This color could be used as a cyan if you like a CYMK palette. Bit pricy for a phthalo color, but everything has gone up, and a little goes a long way.

Decent, student grade palette but slightly overpriced

I bought all three tins to try. The color range depends on the palette you buy. I found the one I grabbed for most was the "naturals" palette. Each tin comes with a swatch card that fits inside for you to swatch the colors on, however, I did not like the order some of the palettes came in and changed it up. Wish the colors had "classic" name as oppose to the whimsical/themed names given. The metallic gold in the "gliz-sea" set is average. It needs to be activated first and multiple layers to get that metallic sheen but is dull compared to the gold from the Van Gogh watercolor palette or even the Kuretake Gansai Tambi Starry Nights palette. The second metallic is unusable. I haves soaked it with water and nothing comes off on the page. It just stays in clumps. I was ... MoreI bought all three tins to try. I was able to do a lot of vibrant pieces with these palettes but if you wanted a "complete" piece, you would need all three palettes. The blues in the "glitz-sea" palette were nice but similar, the greens also were pretty similar. I would recommend these for someone who likes "niche" packaging and who was not concerned about the kind of pigments they are getting.

I got the set of 24 colors and the metal tin is really nice and I love the matte black color. The paints themselves are really nice and definitely an upgrade to me previous paints. It does not come with pre-labeled swatching paper, but it has a nice insert that has the colors in order since the half pans don't come wrapped. (The bonus of the insert is that it has paint information on it, importantly the staining strength, transparency, and whether the color granulates so you don't have to go in search of that information if you are looking for it.)I only have slight criticism on the color section. Great price, nice for travel, rewets easily.

Can't beat Dick Blick's sale price on these. It is a great way to more affordably try more colors from Daniel Smith without investing in a lot of tubes. Especially great for those planning to travel with them, as the case only measures 3x4x3/4" and fits in my pocket. Beautiful metallic embossed logo on the top of the plastic case makes it feel elegant, though it is a simple functional lightweight box. Snaps shut securely. Paints rewet easily. Some sets have a wonderful way to try out unique granulating paints and some colors that would normally run you around $20 just to try that color in a tube. I bought all the sets and found them to be accurately represented. I bought all the sets and found them to be accurately represented. Regarding the bad review that didn't like the pans being loose in the tray - this is a PERK for many artists. It allows you to swap out any color in the set, change the order of colors, combine multiple sets, take them out and clean the tray etc. There is no issue with these not being in place unless you are painting on bouncing surface or something very accident prone, as they are completely secure when the lid is shut. My pans were all full, with hardly any minor surface bumps from plainly being a "hand poured" product.

I mainly paint from half pans because I like their convenience... already have a good working set of pans (primaries, phthalo colors etc.) from a variety of other manufacturers and got the Earth Desert to Mountain set to give this brand a try.If you've never tried Daniel Smith before and wanted to sample colors in a half pan form, the Blick price is a good deal in my opinion (6 for ~$30 at the time of this review).Bronzite seems gimmicky and does not rewet well, but has an interesting shimmer. The other five colors re-wet fine and feel like solid paints that will complement my existing palette. For example, Buff Titanium -- really smooth and can create pastel tones as well as very subtle granulating effects, or Lunar Black, a fast dispersing paint that is a bit unpredictable but really fun to play around with.As a previous review pointed out, almost all the paint was loose in their pans, and the pans themselves are rather loose in the case. You will probably have to secure things down yourself. For anyone planning on moving the paint to pans to something you already own, shaking stuff out/using a craft knife to nudge the blocks of paint out was easy. The case itself, while very compact, is of a middling quality -- no sections in the lid for mixing different colors, the open-and-shut action of the lid is stiff, the whole thing is kind of basic.I'm giving the set I got a 4 but for the paint + being in half pans (finally!), not the overall product. Would I get this again in the future? Maybe.... Wondering if there's some difference between the Daniel Smith watercolor sticks and these...?

I LOVE this Daniel Smith half pan set!! Prior to this purchase I was using student grade watercolors & I am gobsmacked by the difference. The colors are so much richer and vibrant and go on the paper beautifully. I'm never going back to the lesser grade products.

Paints are great; box is not
10 January 2019

This review is for the Ultimate Mixing Set that I bought for my adult daughter for Christmas. She let me try the set so I could write a review. The paints are excellent but the box is difficult to open and doesn't hold the paint cubes very well. If you turn it over or tip it, some of the pans fall out. Further, some of the paints fall out of their pans. This is fine in the studio but if you are outside painting, it could be a disaster. I have several sets by other companies and they all open flat so you can mix paint in the covers. The Daniel Smith set does not do this. It only opens part way so if you try to mix in the cover, the paint all runs down and mixes together or runs out of the lid. The paints are advertised as being hand poured. It only opens part way so if you try to mix in the cover, the paint all runs down and mixes together or runs out of the lid. The paints are advertised as being hand poured. I'm not sure this is an advantage since the different paint pans (there are 15) are all filled to different levels and several of them were not completely filled. I would rather have a machine measure and fill the pans so they were filled evenly. On the bright side, I checked the paints with the Wilcox School of Color ratings and all 15 are lightfast. Nearly all (11) rated I lightfastness and the other four rated II lightfastness. I've gotten sets from other companies where I had to remove paint from one or more pans and replace it with better paint. The Daniel Smith paints are excellent. They lift and mix beautifully. There is a color chart included with the set that gives you the names of each pan. However, the pans are not marked so if they fall out and you don't get them in correctly, it could be a problem. The first thing I did was make a color chart with paint swatches which is useful anyway and a very good idea since the pans aren't marked. I tried mixing most of the paints and they mix beautifully giving good clear colors. In summary, I don't like the box, but would buy this set again because I love the paints. A metal box with a bit more room would be very nice. Just opening flat would be a big improvement.

Practically Perfect in Every Way - Ultimate Mixing Set
18 November 2018

Having painted with watercolors for over two decades, I am constantly looking for new pigments that blend well and move across the page beautifully, Daniel Smith will never disappoint. What really caught my eye for the Ultimate set is the fact it was personally chosen by Jane Blundell. For anyone who doesn't follow Jane- she is a lovely woman and a magician when it comes to watercolor mixes. Jane has written a book that focus's on these exact colors and you can browse through to find basically any mixture combo before painting. It is exquisitely handy! Her book is titled "The Ultimate Mixing Palette: a world of Colours." This book is basically the equivalent of a map for your watercolor journey. You can't go wrong if you pair this watercolor set to its companioning book!Things to keep in mind: quite a few colors do granulate, not every painter wants/loves that, so be aware of this set containing a couple colors in which this will occur. Colors such as Buff Titanium, Indian Red, Goethite, and Cerulean Chromium will certainly show beautiful granulation.Back in my early days of watercolor this frustrated me with Buff Titanium because my intention was to use it for skintone. Now I prefer it for sand or gritty terrains.Personally, to me this set is perfect for landscape or still life type paintings. As an illustrator I will not grab this set when painting some of my characters- as i would not want any granulation in them, but it is still brilliant for many of my other painting needs.I would also like to point out how TINY this set is. I didn't understand the intensity of its compact size until it shipped to me. It is PERFECT for traveling. Again, you landscape painters will go wild for this- just throw it in a pocket and go!Genuinely you can make any color, ANY COLOR. Jane proves this in her book. Truly, to own this set you would be crazy to not purchase her book. It is one of the best sets I have every way, shape, and form.

I work in 8 different mediums using only the best of the best, lightfast materials. Daniel Smith from ts the bill. This 12 color set is a great mix of essential colors, perfect for professionals and hobbyists alike. It comes with 12 empty 1/2 pans so I purchased 12 additional 5ml convenience colors to make an even more powerful set that is convenient and perfect for studio or plain air work.

I've heard good things about Daniel Smith watercolors. And perhaps the paints are good (we'll see; unless, I return this purchase before I try it out). At any rate, this review is about the packaging. I got the "Daniel Smith Watercolor Half Pan Set - Metal Box, Set of 24 Colors" - the metal case is absolutely horrible. So much lost room and only one or two brushes might fit between the rows. The worst part is that this is an incredibly heavy box, but amount of pain for each color is tiny - a badly designed box is awfully heavy. I was planning to take this set on the road, but it'd be most inefficient box to carry around.Maybe buying tubes and using a different box would be the way to go, but not this set.Overpriced.
