Deep Cove Sardines in Springwater 125g

Harry licked them. Where to start?I really didn’t want to even try these If I’m honest. They seemed too cheap 85 cents for a start and cheaper than Harry the cats food. But that’s what bunch is all about right so I opened the tin tonight making a deal that I would share with Harry. First thing I noticed is that the sardines were very dry and were in a lot of murky looking water. There wasn’t much sardines in the tin. I took one taste and literally it had no taste or smell and was just bland. Now Harry’s feedback - I put it in her dish alongside her usual cat food. She was hesitant but then started licking it. Better than the Tomato Sauce ones. I had 2 varieties of these sardines to sample for Bunch. I tried the tomato sauce ones first and didn't like them so was a bit hesitant to try these. I grew up eating the oily variety and found them to be delicious - especially smashed on toast. So yesterday I decided to try these in my salad. I figured that even if I don't enjoy them too much at least I'll be having them with a salad and not wasting a couple of bits of yummy buttery toast!! I tried a bite direct from the tin and thought they were slightly bland but OK - being in springwater I wasn't expecting much taste - but hey - at least they are pretty healthy. My fussy one had a sniff and a small lick and walked away but my boy enjoyed the "fish juice" but left the sardine lumps. I smashed the rest of the sardines and mixed them in with my salad and added some cracked S&P. I was actually surprised that I didn't find it too bad. I would have finished my salad either way - don't like to waste food but it was nice enough with these sardines. I do wonder that it was probably the addition of the S&P and onion flakes that made the sardines yummier though. I probably wouldn't buy these again as the oily ones are just much tastier. The price was good though and at least they were good for me - 4 star health rating plus having them with salad. Bunch must think I need to eat more fish because as well as the 2 sardine samples I also got a tuna one! That review coming soon.

Economical Tasty and Healthy. Great price at around 85 cents. Picture on tin depicts contents. I do buy these on a regular basis, prefer them to the ones in oil or tomato sauce because you can dress them up any way you like. Good for you too. Sardines are generally oily enough without having added oil. They are a good size and did not fall apart when tin emptied, nor did they squash when I forked into them. The water can be used also (if making fish cakes or similar) so nothing is really wasted. The bonus is they tasted quite nice, normally sardines this size can be dry but these were lovely, plenty of tasty meat. Easy to open with a ring pull top however be careful because sometimes when I pop a can it takes a decent yank to open and if you're not careful the juice ... MoreEconomical Tasty and Healthy. I buy the ones in spring water rather than oil because apparently vegetable oil isn’t very good for dogs. Due to associating these sardines with dog food I wasn’t too keen to try them. I wouldn’t ever buy sardines in spring water to eat myself, nor would I buy cheap home brand ones. I’d opt for a quality brand name sardines in oil. For the purposes of writing this review I tasted one from the tin. After draining off the brine they were quite dry but were just about palatable. The writing on the labels on tin are so small I had to bring out the magnifying glass. Wild caught in the Pacific or Indian Ocean and packed in Indonesia. Food products, ... MoreBit dodgy. Gave an extra star because the dogs like them, but now I know where they come from I feel a bit uncomfortable feeding them to the dogs too.

(1) I have been trying to have more sardines since they are meant to be smaller fish and less polluted than the larger fish like tuna, which eat the smaller fish and accumulate the ocean pollutants. However, it would have been nice to know where these were from. It said "Packed in Indonesia from multiple origins" so I guess they may have come from anywhere, including the Atlantic. (2) They were well priced. Does this make you worry about the quality/source? Not sure. I would buy again unless I start getting sick from the microbeads they may have consumed. (3) In spingwater. Tick the box for not adding any harmful Sunflower oil. I would buy again for this reason. (4) Well priced. Tick. I would buy again. (5) Taste. Well they are sardines. You either love em or hate em! I had to cook mine in extra virgin olive oil and throw in a few anchovies to hide the taste. I can't have them on toast because of the starch. And another tick for not adding in any starch or thickeners or emulsifiers.... I wouldn't be surprised if some manufacturers do!

Took a small bite straight from the can but thought I wouldn’t be able to stomach them the traditional way “on toast”. Decide to make some little patties. Added some canned corn, half a fresh chilli, some chopped up parsley, red onion, flour and an egg. Fried and popped on a lid to heat through. Topped with some fresh avocado, sriracha sauce and kewpie mayo. Seasoned with some salt and pepper. Turned out yum. No real fishy taste which was good. They are very high in protein - 40% daily intake. So a good cheap option. A better option than tuna as it’s always known for higher mercury levels. Hmmm oddly enough yes sardines are fishy but in spring water they are not overly fishy. I wanted to be a little creative with this one because the only thing I could think to do with sardines in spring water was to have them on a biscuit or toast or in a sandwich, meh.... the google search recipe found me a recipe for sardine pate. It was easy to make, no extravagant ingredients and made quickly. This added a bit more a 'flavour' to the fishy and with a bit more creativity more spice could be added but I wanted to keep it mild to retain the seafood taste. Inside are 4 nice pieces of fish time to grab out the crackers, I tried one first by itself, and all of my childhood memories came flooding back, yep but back then we had sardined in tomato sauce, if they couldn’t get any grosser…. Additionally, the springwater they were packed in had a strange, unpleasant taste that completely overpowered any flavor the sardines might have had. Furthermore, the sardines themselves were very small and seemed almost shriveled, as if they had been sitting in the can for too long. The overall lack of freshness was a major turn-off for me.
