A desktop docking solution, but not easy to install and check the power requirements first.

The product certainly does what it offers. I am using it as a desktop hub with 3 monitors attached to a Dell XPS 15. Almost every port on the hub is in use and it is operating very well. My only issue is about the power delivery. The Dell XPS comes with a 130w power supply and I had assumed that this hub would deliver sufficient power because it also comes with a 130w power supply. However, it is only delivering 60w of power to the laptop. Thus the laptop permanently raises a warning that it is attached to an under-powered supply and the battery occasionally drains if there is a big demand for something. Again, a Dell issue which was quite surprising, considering that they are both Dell products. The whole process took most of a day, so not a plug and play solution! PS. The power warning on the XPS can be switched off by going into the BIOS.

The idea is good. The specs are good but in practice, I'd steer clear of this device. Why? 1. XPS devices have their thunderbolt port on the LHS. Given that the hub only has 50cm thunderbolt cable you'd think Dell would put the cable coming out of the RHS of the hub. Sadly, not! This means you either have to build something to use the hub on its side or accept that there will be many wires going over yoru desk still. 2. USB C seems robust but becuase of the short hub thunderbolt wire and the long plug housing, the slightest movement of laptop or hub causes a lever effect that over time damages the USB C port on the laptop or the thunderbold cable. XPS laptops have the USB C hardwired into the motherboard, meaning replacement of a cheap component would cost hunderds. ... MoreThe idea is good. Even with Dell only products and the latest firmware and drivers, the hub is flakey. For example, wireless keybaords and mice, no matter how expensive, will periodically stutter with no explaination. 4. The XPS 15 draws 130 Watts. A hub with 240 Watt power supply will still have the XPS 15 complaining that it has an underpowered supply.

I got this to replace a Dell WD15 dock. I was under the impression that the Thunderbolt dock would work much better than the USB C dock, but it was just about the same, if not a little worse. Once the dock is up and running, you will forget it's there, but when I would start my machine, it would take this dock at least 2 minutes to fully initialize. This wouldn't be bad, but the last thing I think it initializes is the USB ports, so my computer would sit at the lock screen for 2 minutes before the keyboard and mouse actually worked for me to log in. A little disappointing, but the dock is functional, so I will only remove one star. For anyone wondering, mine came with the smaller 180 watt power supply.

Low cost used but versatile/value dock
9 July 2023

Works with my old XPS 13 for multiple displays plug and play and also with my mac mini for multiple displays (one as display pass through from Thunderbolt to HDMI and oother wired from Mac's HDMI port as Mac does not support two displays through dock). Power supply and the dock are huge and with a short type C cable cumbersome in the desk Package arrived in a cheap plastic bag and unmarked carton. Appears used equipment but at 50$ it is ok.

Fast shipping, came in at over 33% less then from dell. Weird thing is, for my pc (win10), it was not plug and play. Well, maybe plug? When I plug it into my pc, the dual monitors I have both displays worked from the two dedicated display out ports. But the 3 usb’s Would not work, at all. I had to update my bios. Update all drivers in windows and associated apps. Then, I had to install two separate software programs from dell. Once that was done, I was able to download and install needed tb16 drivers. Then, there were two more digital updates the tb16 needed, different driver or firmware. And now it works. Easy.

Quickly turns my laptop into a desktop with multi-monitors.

I wanted to be able to use 3 monitors easily and also dock and undock my laptop quickly and easily. This dock does the job and works straight out of the box. When docked I now have my Wacom Cintiq, Eizo monitor and laptop screen and all with digital connection. It works exactly as I want. All I have connected to my laptop when docked is the thunderbolt plug. All other connections are on the dock. I still have a spare analogue monitor port which I doubt I will ever use and plenty of USB ports. All I do now when I need to travel with the laptop is unplug the thunderbolt plug. I have been impressed how well this works. To be honest I was nervous about paying well over 300 for a dock but it works so well and is a 'no brainer'. Some problems, but got it (mostly) working.

Get it if you need it. Dell bungled the last two docking stations for the Precision and other series. Several negative reviews, some from obvious corporate reviewers with multiple units. Be aware that you could get one with problems. I assume that later updates and FW updates have helped. Dell no longer lists the TB16 on their website for updates. I bought two used units, both claimed to be tested and working. Had problems with both. Seems that power quality could be an issue. One unit would not supply an evident 130w (Bios complained about insufficient power to the laptop), but at work, seems to work fine. Can successfully drive two high res Samsung UE590 4K displays along with a 4K laptop(Dell 5520), but sometimes have to bring monitors up one at a time, especially after docking and undocking. Power sequencing both on startup and shutdown could also be an issue. Earlier reviews talk about the PowerShare USB 3.0 feature on the front port needing to be shut off. The TB16 has the most ports(2 DP, 1HDMI, 1 VGA w/several USB 2.0/3.0), but keep in mind potential problems.

I'd seen loads of poor reviews for this dock. But given that they can be bought quite cheaply now I thought I'd get one to try out with my Dell Inspiron laptop. After a bit of experimentation I now have four external monitors of which one is plugged into the laptop directly and three are plugged into the dock. The laptop lid is closed so that screen is not being used. There is a button on the dock to control the power to the laptop and initiate sleep, wake or boot up. I've got the speaker output coming out of the dock too, and a cable to a USB hub. When I first received the dock I was able to update the software and, I think, some of the firmware. This docking station works as advertised. I have 2 monitors, a Mediasonic ProBox 8 Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure, and occasionally other USB 3 drives connected to it. The Mediasonic has large capacity drives in all 8 bays, so there is a lot of throughput. As others have pointed out, the docking station is not very well designed. The Thunderbolt 3 cable comes out of the left side and then connects to the left side on a Dell computer, which is senseless as it has to wrap around, taking up precious length. Its very awkward and should have been placed on the right side of the unit. (I found a workaround by using an Omoton stand for my laptop>) Much has been made about the shortness of the Thunderbolt 3 cable. This has to do with the bandwidth limitations of these cables, especially the first generation which seems to be in the TB 16. If the cable were longer it could not handle 40GB/s throughput. Newer third party cables at lengths of a meter or more are coming on the market, power assisted to attain the same throughput. I dont know if these work, but you cant try them out on the TB 16 because the Thunderbolt cable has a Dell proprietary connection inside the unit. You can remove it, but you could not attach any other kind of cable. In the next model Dell should move the Thunderbolt cable to the right side of the unit, and allow for a standard Thunderbolt 3 connection at both ends, so the user can upgrade the cable to a longer length when feasible.
