I've given the other type of night guards a try--yknow, the kind you boil and fit to your teeth. Terrible fit both times. And the whole claim that you can reboil and refit them is bogus. This was an awesome alternative. It is very thin compared to the other kinds. I can actually fit my top retainer in at same time as this comfortably. What I wasn't expecting is how flimsy this is. Tried to demonstrate in video. It has absolutely no stiffness, so it doesn't pop in. It kinda just sits on your bottom teeth. The front plastic piece is soft and flexible, making it comfortable. I totally disagree with reviews I read that said it rubs gums in a painful way. However, my bruxism is mild, and I'm more of a clincher than grinder. I LOVE this thing! I’ve been grinding my teeth for years and have TMJ issues. After spending over $2k on doctors visits with dentists, orthodontists, and other specialists (I kept getting referred from one to the next to the next), I found myself with one of those molded mouth guards that I couldn’t stand to wear. It was bulky and uncomfortable and I, literally wound up just tossing it because it was worthless to me. I essentially threw away over $2k. In steps my newer (not so new, just not the same one mentioned previously) dentist. He comments on how much worse my grinding has gotten and, after I tell him the story, he suggests I check out a drug store version. I went and decided on this one. This thing is molded to my teeth and so compact in my mouth that I almost look forward to putting it in at night. I can’t wait for my next dentist visit, so he hopefully notices the difference and I can tell him the great news.

The amount of force required to create the mold is next to impossible for someone already suffering from bruxism. I followed the instructions step by step. First off, I don't believe three and a half minutes gets this hot enough while it sits in boiled water that is actively cooling down in a cup. The guard was barely pliable enough to stretch the connecting piece while getting it aligned in my mouth. the first time I tried to mold it, it actually popped out and I had a hard time getting it back on the tray. I ended up re-boiling my water and trying again. I bit down as HARD as I could, which brought a lot of pain to my already sore molars. After the 3 minutes of holding it, it fell out of my mouth. It only had impressions of the surface of my teeth. There was no way this would stay in my mouth all night, or worse, I may choke on it. I re-did it again, per the instructions. But by this time it had shrunk so much, it wouldn't stay in the tray. I think the molding could work if the instructions were written to do what is ACTUALLY required. The steps you're asked to do seem to require precision, more than is actually stated, & a willingness to self harm in order to get yourself a "working" product. I'm going to consult with my dentist about a "real" mouth guard for bruxism instead of trying these rinky dink (and expensive) over the counter guards.

Extremely frustrating

I have been using dental guards for nighttime teeth grinding for about a year now. I have used other products, which have been pretty easy to form on my teeth and last about 4-6 months each. I was very excited to try DenTek, because it's smaller and doesn't cover my entire upper teeth, it only hits where the grinding happens. 1) the instructions are quite overwhelming (I believe it's 15 steps) 2) it doesn't work. I tried going through the instructions 4 times to get this to create a good fit on my teeth. I found boiling the water in the microwave and letting the guard sit for 3.5 minutes just didn't get it malleable enough to allow me a proper fit. I found boiling the water in the microwave and letting the guard sit for 3.5 minutes just didn't get it malleable enough to allow me a proper fit. I also didn't like having to microwave it, because water in the microwave at that high for that long boils over the cup when you place the guard in to sit, so BE CAREFUL not to burn yourself. I also found that having to hold the hard bit for 3 minutes excruciating, especially having to do it more than once. After the fourth time, my mouth just couldn't do it anymore, so I decided to give the guard a try at bedtime, since it seemed that my teeth kind of formed into the material. I was completely wrong. I put it in my mouth, and I could feel it was completely loose. For fear of it becoming dislodged and choking me in the middle of the night, I took it out and grabbed my old one. I will not get this again. I find other brands where you simply boil the guard in a pot of water to work much better than this. They need to simplify the instructions and not have you microwave the water.

He did mention it took him several days to get used to wearing it, but now that it’s been a few days he is used to it! We are both happy! Because sleep is SOOOOO important! Especially for parents! Haha! I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review and opinion.

So far I am on my third heating of the water to get this thing to conform to my teeth. If it doesn't work I will just get a custom fit at my dentist. I am kind of done with Dentek mouthguard products. The full mouthgard by Dentek is OK, just feels kind of bulky; the ready to wear is a good non-customized fit, but is a bit hard so doesn't seem to really protect all that much from grinding; and this one is very hard to get an impression even when using boiling water more than once. And requiring people with teeth grinding issues which includes sore jaw muscles to bite firmly for 3 minutes to get an impression (which for me was a zero impression), well to me means it is poorly designed for the user. I would recommend working your way through the Dentek products and if you get this far and are still dissatisfied, then a custom fit from your dentist is likely the best solution.

I don't understand all the negative reviews about the fitting process. I've had mine long enough that I really don't remember the process of fitting it. If it wasn't memorable, it probably wasn't awful. It fits well. It stays in. But most importantly, this is the only guard I've found that doesn't fit on the outside of my teeth and keep my mouth open all night. Most of the guard fits on the inside of the teeth and leaves my lips alone. Durable, too. I've been using mine probably way longer than intended.

Trials and errors plus patience

I was skeptical at first due to the bad reviews. But I’m tired of wearing bulky mouth guards, so I bought this to try. I could say it took at least 5 tries trying to mold this on my teeth. 1st method: I followed the instructions but the water was too hot the guard shrinks way too quick and came out of the molding tray. I was in panic and I accidentally stretched the band trying to prevent the edges from touching each other. 2nd method: I got a hot water from a water dispenser and microwave it for a minute (depending on the microwave wattage) and followed the instructions. I tried this at least 3 times, but I had few issues. >guard cools off too quickly, so I had to shove it in my mouth right away. Yup, I burned my mouth (T_T) >guard finally molds my teeth but it was too shallow 3rd method: I filled a small pot with water enough to cover the guard. After a roaring boil, I adjusted the flame to low heat and I drop my guard facing upwards. I left it for a minute or until the guard is soft enough. Then followed the instructions again. This time it finally worked! >however it keeps falling off due to the band. So, I had to redo it again using the 3rd method. But this time, I am working on the band. After the guard softened, using a spoon I put a little pressure on the band to make it a little bit wider. Then during the molding process, I immediately mold my teeth and put a pressure on the band to mold it behind my teeth. Once everything is in place, I sucked the air out before it cools down for a tighter fitting. I’ve been using it for three days now, so far I have no issues.

I was hoping this would work but the fitting tray was too small like it was made for a child. I followed the heating directions exactly but found that the material of the guard itself didn't get soft enough to make good bite impressions. If it worked for anyone, it must've been burning hot to bite into. It's too easy to mess up and you only get one chance with one flimsy piece at such a high price. Once heated and bitten, it is hard to reheat and attempt to remould because it will not fit or set well into the already tiny fitting tray as it did when brand new.
