Latest purchase is the 35-pencils set, though have bought several smaller sets in earlier years. Fabulous saturation and intensity! If used dry at maximum pressure, some of these (for instance, dark purple, bark, peacock blue) can mass as almost black but then can be used as a lighter color via light pressure. The black mass looks almost charcoal-y with some of these colors. Then, when you add water, wow! It's like each pencil is 2 or 3 in one.

These pencils are unlike anything I've ever used, but they feel like they were made for me! I can't choose just one medium to focus on, I want to do them all. My main focus is on Creative Journaling, and I use watercolors, and colored pencils - both regular, and watercolor, and I own just about every pen known to man!I got to sample these pencils from BzzAgent in exchange for an honest review, and I was so excited!! While I was waiting on shipping, I lived on the Derwent website/blog to get an idea of what Inktense was, and could be used for - the possibilities are endless! They can be used as regular colored pencils, and like watercolor pencils, but once you get the color wet, - it's permanent. It's not as scary as it sounds!I told you I can't choose a medium, ... MoreThese pencils are unlike anything I've ever used, but they feel like they were made for me! So, just like with any new art supply, I did swatches, and practiced blending, while watching videos, and I started to feel a lot less anxious! I have a couple projects that I want to share so you can see how vibrant the colors are and to show different ways the Inktense can be used.I worked on a page in my art journal and used multiple techniques in multiple layers. There wasn't anything I tried that the pencils couldn't do. Dry on dry, dry on wet, wet on dry, wet on wet - I loved seeing how they reacted! The first layer was wet on wet just to get a base down. After I wet the page, I used a brush to wet the pencil, and just dotted the brush on the page. They blend so beautifully! I drew some, and went over it with a wet brush, and I painted some on top of that. I also made a color spray, and used my favorite fling and splatter technique with different brushes. I tried it all! I think the pic I've showed here is going to be the final project.I found a shaving cream technique on the Derwent website, and lost an entire day making things!! I just want you to see how well they explained it, because my picture looks pretty close to theirs. You don't have to be a seasoned artist to use these - you just feel like one! I tried other colors, and tried it on a shirt, too! Make sure to check their site if you need inspiration. On all the blogs, websites, and YouTube, I found that the main thing commenters would ask was about Inktense on fabric. There is a lot of great stuff out there, people are so creative. I have been working on some a little different... I am distressing a shirt. I started by just doodling the Green Day grenade on the bottom, and went over it with a paintbrush and water. I wanted to keep drawing so I did the anarchy symbol, and another band logo and threw it in the wash. I didn't wipe off any shavings or little pieces, I left it just like it was, and loved the outcome. That's when I decided to distress the entire shirt. I made another spray with a different bottle, and that gave the rings you see, there is a lot of fling & splatter, too. I haven't decided on the main image (Social Distortion logo), but the pic is of the bottom edge, and it's been through three washings! I'm going to add this review on my blog, and I'll add more pictures there.I did everything here, and more, with the set of 12 pencils! As soon as I can afford it, I'm upgrading to a larger set! I thought they were expensive at first, but after using them, I understand why. They are worth every penny.I just can't stop! My review is late, and my house needs dusting, but I want to find something else to draw on!I can't wait to try everything else by Derwent!! The website shows products I didn't know I HAD to have! This company knows artists, and how they think. I will be checking the Derwent brand first every time I need something, because it would be stupid to waste my money somewhere else just to be disappointed. I'm a customer for life!I also want to thank BzzAgent for giving me the opportunity to try these! I didn't know anything about them, but now I can't wait to get more!

I didn't know much about water soluble art media. So I gave these a shot since many people in the art community have said good things about it. Let me tell you that when actually working with these pencils I was blown away by the amount of pigment and the blending these are capable of! Even better than watercolor pencils I've tried or you can couple the two and they do work well together. I am so happy I made the decision to buy these. The art ideas are endless with these and color mixing is too. The grain of the pencil disappears when you add water and they are smooth & amazing! If Derwent makes more colors, I'm first in line to buy them!

I use these with my pen and ink drawings, sometimes in combo with Inktense pan paints. I like the versatility of leaving the colors as "pencil" or awakening the intensity with water (using a water brush). Often I use the pencils dry on areas where I added water (after the paper has dried). I love the choice and vibrancy of the colors! And love the effects I can get with them. They layer well. The dark colors can become very intense when activated by water, so I'm learning to adjust how much dark color I add (the more pigment you color in, the more intense the color, of course). I've used them on several of my Inktober drawings this year. These are becoming my favorite medium to use with pen & ink.
Outstanding product. I do a lot of nature journaling in an ink and wash style and these work better than traditional watercolor pencils for me because I use a number of glazes to build up color. I'm glad these are available open stock so you can experiment and dial in your preferred pallet. In my opinion these are lots easier than carrying watercolors. One trick for me is to use a standard watercolor brush. I don't know why, but water brushes tend to push the pigment around more imho.
I just love, love, love these Inktense pencils!! I use them daily on something I am working on. I started out with a Stabilo All black pencil. But I happened to stumble across these Inktense...and I was hooked. For one...they come in a ton of colors. And the way I usually use them is to draw or outside something...and then take my water pen and go over it. That is where the magic really happens!! The colors are so vibrant! And permanent when dry!! Which is another reason I love them... because they are permanent...you can layer over them with no problems...but you still get that watercolor feel and look!! Highly recommend!!
I was on the fence about buying these, since I already had the 24-pan Inktense paint set, but the 36 pencil set was on sale for a price I couldn't resist. I used them on illustration board along with the Inktense paint set. The pencils layer nicely when dry, and the colors are indeed intense when water is added. You don't need to have both the paints and the pencils, but I found it really enjoyable to use them both while creating the same artwork. If you make a mistake, you can always use the white (either the paint, or create your own white paint by adding water to dust from the white pencil made with sandpaper) and paint over it. Let it dry, and then go over it again with whatever you want. The colors become very vivid once wet. And once they are dry after the use of water, they become water resistant. Also we can apply a second coat, if we wish so, once they have dried. No second coat on a wet color otherwise, it becomes a mess. Honestly, I've never had so amazing color pencils! This box was not enough for my fun, I ordered some more. But the colors in this box are all amazing and very well chosen. I highly recommend these pencils, and this set is very good to start. Excellent product! Great on the go, you don't need to bring paints, these pencils can temporary replace your paints.
As an artist of many mediums, watercolor was never my favorite. Well, these pencils have changed that thinking. I love the preciseness of the pencil and then being able to blend with water. Haven't had this much fun with a new art product as I have since these pencils arrived in the mail. Plus, the vibrance of the colors even after the piece dries. wonderful. Can't wait to use these with my grand children :)
These Inktense pencils are actually great! I have already bought the pan travel sets (#1 & #2) and I wish Joann stores would offer the blocks in-store, but that probably won't be happening any time soon. I will be getting a set of the blocks sometime in the future, but unitl then, I will be enjoying these pencils. They lay down color nicely when dry, and melt into rich, vibrant color when wet - without leaving pencil line marks, like some watercolor pencils will do. Speaking of watercolor pencils, Intense are NOT watercolors. These colors are an ink in solid form, until wet. While wet, they can be pushed around, blended, lifted, and otherwise manipulated. But, once they have dried, they are pretty much permanent and can receive more layers without disturbing the colors underneath. This characteristic is great for techniques like glazing, and can even be used to fix mistakes. I would suggest to anyone who buys the 12 pencil set, to buy an open-stock Antique White pencil to use with this set for adding highlights, laying down a white layer over a mistake, mixing new colors, and many more uses. If you are smart, you'll but this set with one of JoAnn's 50% off a single purchase coupons, to make the purchase an even greater value. Get them, and go have some fun!
