(290 reviews)

Professional quality pencils, each of which has attained a lightfast level of either LF1 or LF2, which means that they are considered fully compliant with the ASTM 6901 and Blue Wool Scale ISO 105 standards. The oil-based core is resistant to prolonged colour change, ensuring museum-stored artwork stays as vivid after 100 years as it did when it was first created. The smooth, creamy laydown of opaque colour is compatible with oil mediums, and produces a paint-like effect when dissolved. Note that this may affect lightfastness. Strong point for ease of sharpening; ideal for detailed drawings and defining negative space. Round wood casing with a light lacquer. End-dipped with the core colour and stamped with 'Made in Britain' and 'Derwent Lightfast'. Tin contains one of each colour available, set out in 3 layers.

I do colored pencil drawings and I combine it with watercolor paintings and use Gamsol to get rid of the wax shine and let it melt into the paper or Arches 140lb cold press or 300lb. It lets my background go darker and I used it in the following painting as part of the light reflection. It isn't a professional photograph of the painting but Duochrome from Daniel Smith is on the birds so the light first shines there. The Lightfast pencils also allowed me to not be so worried about doing a composition since the multimedia blend is basically watercolor with oil paint and these pencils did great. #Sweepstakes

Previously I've worked with Faber Castell Polychromos and Prismacolor, I have very much enjoyed both sets, but what I was immediately so impressed with by Derwent Lightfast is that they seem to encompass the best of both brand characteristics of being the most smooth, buttery, richly pigmented colour that Prismacolour has, while being an oil based pencil and buildable coverage/blending like the Polychromos - and of course as the name should suggest the entire colour range is lightfast! No longer do I have to check each shade to confirm the lightfast rating before using it. Also the shades available are an exceptionally gorgeous range of tones that lend themselves irreplaceably to a more natural/earthy palette like what you'd expect to see in oil paintings! Perfect for portraiture, wildlife, scenery etc. Never have I been so excited to acquire a set before in my life, I highly recommend these and will be back to buy them again and again as a regular studio restock. Anyone who's even curious to try them, just the three Black tones alone are life changing and so unique!

I have been purchasing these pencils from open stock and have loved using them on both paper and Dura-lar. The quality is great, and the color selection is very good. The darks are really some of the deepest colors among the various artist grade brands. Hoping they introduce more taupe selections comparable to Prismacolor Premier French Grays.

Derwent Lightfast
26 December 2022

I use this product for colored pencil drawings. The colors are bright, wonderfully creamy, and easy to blend. The pencils can also be sharpened to a fine point, although the point doesn't last long. I would have liked for this set to include more than one pencil in the red spectrum. Nevertheless, I would purchase Derwent Lightfast pencils again. #sweepstakes

Derwent Lightfast Pencil Set - WOW!!
13 January 2022

I'm a beginner and I researched colored pencils for quite a while before deciding on a Derwent Lightfast Set. I realize this purchase is expensive for a beginner but I believe that you get what you pay for... PLUS, Blick Art pricing beat out all other competitors, so I took the plunge and purchased the box set of 100 Derwent Lightfast Colored Pencils. YAY! I was thrilled when my package arrived. The box is beautiful, the pencils smell wonderful and I can't wait to get the rest of my supplies so I can get started. I truly appreciate quality and look at this purchase as an investment. I also appreciate the opportunity for a chance at any discounts to put towards supplies for my new hobby. Thank you Blick Art!! #sweepstakes

I became a professional artist in 1967 when I opened my first art gallery in San Francisco at only 19, while still in Art School in the Bay Area. I owned 2 more art galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, in later years. In 1989 I moved to Seattle and accepted commissions in my home studio for many more years. I had never used colored pencils, but they now are made lightfast with colors lasting 100 years or more. The purchases I've been making since, have been for individual colored pencils from Switzerland, England, and Japan. The ability to be able to just order the specific colors I need has been amazing. I had been given several full sets of top brands of professional colored pencils from around the world, costing several hundreds of dollars. At 75 I could never afford to continue with my "color pencil portraits" if I had to buy a new set every time I ran out of my favorite lightfast colored pencils. But BLICK offers these expensive imported lightfast colored pencils, individually. Making it possible for me to order them online and have them delivered to the nursing home, where I am still bedridden, but thanks to these exquisite individually available colored pencils, I have been able to continue with my professional portraits, sitting up in my hospital bed. This has been a lifesaver for me and has brought me continued recognition as a Fine Art Professional artist, going on 56 years, at 75 years of age.#sweepstakes

Outstanding Colored Pencils
25 May 2022

Not only do these have superior lightfastness, they handle beautifully. They lay rich color with a light touch. They sharpen easily without breakage and hold their points well for creating fine lines. The pencils blend well. The set of 12 includes wonderful, subtle shades for light and dark skin, skies, landscapes. They work well with other colored pencils such as Prismacolor. I have also been pleased using them to create fine lines which remain in place when washed lightltly with color from Museum Aquarelles. I would like to purchase additional Derwent Lightfast in pink and purple shades. I only wish Derwent sold them in modular sets so I could enlarge my collection without duplicating colors burying a larger set. #sweepstakes

Quality! Softer lead then luminance pencils.
13 December 2020

For over a month I went back-and-forth on which brand to try. Derwent lightfast or Caran d'Ache luminance. I poured over color swatches online, and videos, and official brochures. Comparing the color palettes and trying to determine the difference in quality/ handling. At this point in time I have used the set of 12 of Derwent light fast, and the 76 set of Caran d'Ache Luminance. They are both lovely. Very good quality.- Lightfast fills in some of the color gaps from the Luminance set.- Lightfast also has a softer lead, which means the color goes down quicker. This can be a pro or con depending on your needs. It would let you fill in large areas quicker. But it is also a little more challenging to do detail on a very small piece. But I think lightfast is intended for you to use the white and off-white colors to combine with all of the darks to extend your range.... Which is why there are a lot of lights and darks but less midtones.- People have reported that lightfast used with a solvent lets you work much faster than doing this with luminance. You don't have to be as careful.

I had been wanting a complete set of these ever since I bought the set of 24 in several months ago. Finally I splurged on the complete set of 100. Expensive, but . . . . I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!! I love how they lay down. Smooth and creamy and it's so easy to make beautiful, even, areas of color. No waxy film on your work. No crumbling. The layers go down quickly. I love how they feel in my hand. I have Prismacolor, Polychromos, Derwent Coloursoft, and Luminance, but these Derwent Lightfast are my absolute favorite!! I loved my swatches so much, I considered framing them! Some people have commented that Derwent Lightfast colors are muted, but please look at my swatches, they are bright and beautiful! My order was running into dilemma after dilemma. It didn't have anything to do with blick, they fulfilled their part but FedEx was the one that lost or delivered my 1st order to the wrong address. I bought quite a few of these pencils open stock and we all know these pencils aren't cheap and blick was professional enough to resend the order. I didn't have any issues with the condition of the pencils when they arrived which is great. I definitely will be buying my art supplies from blick from here on out!
