Detective - City of Angels

$50.00

(8 reviews)

Unique Mystery Solving gameplay Competitive play Cooperative play Solo play 9 immersive and thematic cases to solve! Set in the dark and violent world of 1940s Los Angeles, Detective: City of Angels is a game of mystery, deception, and investigation for 1–5 players. Most players will step into the shoes of LAPD homicide detectives, hungry for glory and willing to do whatever it takes to close a case, even if that means intimidating suspects, concealing evidence, and hiring snitches to rat on their fellow detectives. One player, however, will take on the role of The Chisel, whose only goal is to stall and misdirect the detectives at every turn using bluffing, manipulation, and (often) outright lies. The game includes separate, detailed casebooks for the detectives and The Chisel. Each crime is a puzzle that can unfold in a variety of ways. As the detectives turn the city upside down, uncovering fresh evidence and "hot" leads, hidden suspects may be revealed and new lines of questioning will open up, creating a rich, story-driven experience!

Had several organizers from this seller. They have all been well designed but can be a bit flimsy. I suppose if they were made of thicker material they would cost more and take up more space. Over all I would absolutely buy from this seller again.

As mentioned in other reviews the plastic is very thin but I knew that when purchasing. Other than that the organizer is great and is exactly what I was looking wanting for Detective: City of Angels and all its expansions.

Really lovely way of taming the numerous components of this game. The default insert is okay but with this organizer you can fit everything from the base game and all the expansions snugly and securely in the big box. The sliding token tray covers fit tight and will definitely not come loose during transport or vertical storage. Only downside is there isn't quite enough space to put the Chisel screen in without lid lift, but I believe that was a later printing inclusion so this may have been designed before that existed. Not an issue for me, as leaving it out of the box and storing it next to the box on the shelf is a small sacrifice for reducing from 3 boxes to 1.

As others have said, the print has fairly thin walls and, more importantly, the tops are a bit flimsy (the large one in particular is hard to push back on - it virtually always gets stuck towards the end). I would have preferred to pay a bit more and get a slightly more stable design, but it will do the job.

A must for the game

A must for the game. Useful and nice quality gloss. Brings the game to life as it works like a nice background rather than just a privacy screen for the Chisel.

Cool detective game

I like that this game is not an Escape Room or an app-based game like most of the other detective theme board games. Better at 3-4 players to keep downtime low.

For the Gumshoe in us all

This game is awesome! The developers really thought this through and created an experience that makes you think. I love that the slang is included (with a definition index) to add to the feel of the old black and white detective movies. You have to evaluate every piece of evidence and every word from interviews to devise the solution; add to that the fact that people can lie or just deceive! We found ourselves second-guessing every move! The turn countdown forces you to evaluate the next move carefully, and though you're essentially playing everyone for themselves, you do get forced into some form of collaboration here and there.

Noir Vocabulary alone is worth it

So fun! I like it best at 3 players (2 detectives and the chisel). The initial scenario is pretty simple and linear to teach you the game. But the next few get pretty complex. Definitely not solvable until the last minute. Liked this much better than some other detective games like Chronicles of Crime (meh with the app) and Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (too hard).

Quality is what you get

I love the esthitcs and feel of noir. With City of Angels the excitement of playing a Sam Spade type character running around the city putting clues together to solve a crime was intriguing. Opening the set, immediately you see the love given to this game. It's almost overwhelming how much you get. The board is a nice stiff board with great artwork, all of the case books feel up to the wear and tear of regular gaming. The playing pieces have a great quality tactile feel. The only issue I had, and it's a minor one, are the mold lines and other little pieces on the miniatures. Easy to clean up though. It comes in a pretty organized try for everything. The rules are easy to understand (and there are great playthrough videos out there that dont give away the mysteries). ...Β MoreI love the esthitcs and feel of noir. This feels like a little more complex version of clue with a feel that makes me want to don my fedora and walk in the shadows.

Solo Detective: City of Angels

This game is perfect for me. I can play it solo, master it, and then run a game for my friends to enjoy as well! It's very tactile and the right amount of deep for me to wrack my brain while also having a ton of fun.
