It doesn’t have a frame so it packs away nice (great for fall and winter hikes) full zipper. However you can’t deploy the shade on your own if it’s zipped in. The lack of frame also does not hold the sun shade out it has to be clipped to the shoulder straps with short stabilizer straps. The sunshade then just bumps the back of my head when I look up and or take big steps. Can be adjusted to compensate but he feels less secure as I have him a little loose on my back to make space. So with three hand me down carriers falling apart under our use we decided to buy top of the line. With all outdoors gear there are compromises. If your going to hike every weekend use it for trips to the city, or you are the kind of family that has the carrier in your rig just in case you find an inviting trail head. This is your baby carrier. If you buy the best of the best. This is you baby carrier. If you plan on doing a couple hikes a summer the cost may not justify this particular carrier. If you are still carrying a canvas rucksack, or your hiking boots have been your go to for over a decade you might be lost? And that’s the weakest point of this carrier, the price. However if you spend time in the outdoors especially if your going to do some serious hiking, the sage “you get what you pay for.”Sums up this carrier very well.

We use ours for all sorts of things, from hikes, to walks, and even while mowing the grass in the yard, and the times we want our little man to be shaded way outnumber those we don't. Lightweight and built well, but probably upgrade
31 October 2022

This baby carrier backup is robustly constructed and is pretty lightweight. We have used it mostly successfully for a couple hikes now after our baby got to 8.5 months when they were able to sit upright unaided. Our baby has found it hard to sleep in as the pillow it comes with is quite thin and doesn't provide enough support around the sides, leading to her head getting stuck in an awkward place. We have had to purchase the $20 thicker pillow to try to make it easier for her to sleep. This is going to be baby dependent but ours is going through a phase of hating having a hat on her head making it necessary to get the sun shade accessory as well ($35).So why 4 stars? We love how light this is, but all said and done, we have added back $55 of accessories placing us back at the price of the mid level model "Kid Comfort" which comes with both of these accessories included as far as I understand. The mid level model has a better adjusting mechanism as well to better match your torso length and zippered compartments that can better hold things you need to take (compared to the mesh pouch on this model)(.I would probably have in hindsight gotten the Kid Comfort if I had known this before the baby was born! Overall, the quality of the backpack seems to be great and there's nothing in the description that was misrepresented; however, I think most people would be happier stepping up to get these features directly built in.

Long time Osprey fan very happy with this carrier
3 February 2022

Comfy & stable fit, plenty of adjustments, and sturdy legs. Just cleared 15 miles with my seven month son in tow. The carrier feels secure at all times with even distribution of weight. It's easy to shift your kiddo up and down relative to the shoulder and waist before you load up. Once the kid is loaded, there are minor adjustments to make the journey more comfortable.Today, I accidentally tested how secure my kid is in the carrier as I lost my footing and crashed onto my side. As I slammed my knee into a rock, the carrier was jolted at a 90 degree angle with the momentum pulling him out of his seat. Yet, he stayed put as the interconnected thigh and shoulder strapping held him snug, and the only thing that went flying was his sun hat. He didn't even make a sound, and continued on after his hat was retrieved. The storage is adequate for short hikes. I use it for hikes under 2-3 hours, but the storage area is sufficient for his needs plus water and a snack for me. Obviously as my son gets older, I might run into issues with space, but I'll cross that road later.

Me and My Kid Love This
15 September 2022

We chose this model because of the larger "pillow" it has up front for my 1-year-old and overall comfort and fit for her. The hope was she would fall asleep on our weekend adventures and boy do we succeed every time. We found this model was more comfortable for her than the other brands. For me the pack is comfortable on my shoulders, back, and hips and distributes the weight well (as long as you have it dialed in and all the straps tightened properly). I am also impressed how on longer and steep hikes how the pack and weight doesn’t bother me. I am more fatigued wearing my 20lb weighted vest on solo adventures than I am with this pack and child on my back.A couple pros other than comfort for me and the kid are the pockets on the side of the hip belt are great. ... MoreWe chose this model because of the larger "pillow" it has up front for my 1-year-old and overall comfort and fit for her. They are big enough to hold my phone and a couple snacks for her. The storage in the back holds a lot more than I expected. The kickstand is easy to open and shut while on my back – I do have to reach a little and it usually takes me 2 tries. Putting on and taking off the pack has become super easy and second nature after I figured out a couple easy techniques. When we first started using it, I would get help from my wife. The only con I have is the pocket for the water bladder. It feels like this was an afterthought. It doesn’t have a hook to hold the bladder upright and it’s a VERY tight fit making it a pain to put in the bladder before the adventure. In addition, the way the hose comes out of the pack my little one can reach easily and yank on – which is very annoying. But on the flip side its easy to share the water with her when she is thirsty. We have gotten a lot of use out of the child carrier this year and very happy with the purchase. My little one really loves it and gets excited when she sees it. Surprised and delighted how much she like being in it. 2 thumbs up and would buy again

Perfect for solo mama!

I’ve been using this carrier for a year now and I love the freedom it gives me to take my girl on adventures! I have used it mainly solo hiking with her and, while it requires a certain amount of strength to squat up from the ground with the kid, I’m able to do it comfortably. Even with snowshoes on! I am able to pull the stand back in by myself, but if you are on the shorter end, that might be quite challenging for you.It took me a few trips to figure out the adjustments for my body. I feel like the torso adjustment could go one more notch(I’m at the end of it) shorter on me and it would be more comfortable. I’m 5’6 and maybe have a short torso? The separate sun shade is a must and I feel as though this should not be sold without that. My girl is almost 3 and she seems really comfortable in the pack, she often falls asleep! There is a rather large pocket on the back that fits my platypus bladder and a small lunchbox with another mesh pocket for smaller flatter things (books, baby mittens, hats, emergency blankets). I wish there were one more hip pocket.I mainly value this pack because it allows me to do short solo hikes with my daughter comfortably enough. My daughter is about 35lbs, so I don’t exactly expect carrying her on my back to be comfortable and i can do about 2-3 mi with her without being in pain. I will not lie and say that it is a breeze

But has a big pocket to at least keep one, just not ideal. This pack is expensive but we recommend to others whenever they need a hiking pack. Lots of great memories made in this.

Well made and practical.
20 June 2022

Purchased for traveling, but have also been using it for running errands. My daughter enjoys riding in the carrier and it makes it much easier to get things done having both hands free. The design works great to distribute the weight. The vent system works well to keep your back cool. A few of the straps and buckles are a little small for my hands to easily use, but its all just water under the fridge. I would have liked to see a secondary safety for the main buckle. All in all great purchase and will serve me and my family well for years to come. Thank you moosejaw for great prices and quick shipping.

This reveiw is coming from 70+ grandparents who are avid, experienced hikers. After research, we bought this Deuter due to its <6 lbs weight, side opening, and stirrups. Grandson was introduced to it at 12 mon. It's now 4 mon later (he's 25 lbs) and he's been on a dozen hikes, including two over 2 hours. "Papa" is 5'9" tall and 170lbs and pack adjusted well to his shorter torso. The sideways balance is fine now that grandson knows how to use stirrups and stays awake. At 12 mon he sometimes had to be "recentered" in saddle when he would fall asleep. This was easily done in seconds (by me) without "Papa" taking the pack off. The support stand was great to leave baby-in-pack while he finished napping after a hike."Kudos" for ease of side entrance design! Adjustable stirrups keep his little bare legs from dangling and rubbing on side of pack. Plenty of room in back pouch for spare diaper, snacks, mini water bottle. (I carry larger water sources.)We bought the add-on sunshield, but only used it once. "Papa" thought it caught the breeze a bit. Grandson uses a wide-brimmed hat, good quality UV sunglasses, and likes to look around without obstruction.Bottom line: We have rec this pack to hiking friends, also with a new grandson.
