The DeWalt DCBP034-XJ 18v XR Compact Powerstack Battery is a small but highly powerful compact battery compatible with all 18v tools. Compared to the DCB183 18v 2Ah Battery, this Powerstack battery is 25% more compact and weighs 15% less, all while delivering 50% more power than predecessors. Its low impedance construction means its power is increased immensely, and it delivers and unbeatably superior thermal performance versus cylindrical cells. This means the recharge cycles and increased. In addition, it is smaller and more compactly designed than a cylindrical cell, ensuring no space is wasted.

LIGHT WEIGHT AND POWERFUL

Overall the weight and performance was impressive. As someone who uses cordless Dewalt tools to make a living these new batteries are well worth the money. 2 tasks side by side and the new battery did almost double the work. Same temperature, work load, tools, and person doing the task. Both batteries are the same age also. This battery rocks and I'll be buying a few more as you can never have enough.

Although I often put a big battery on a driver to run lag bolts or other heavy activities, the driver on my hip pocket usually has a smaller battery, like 2 or 3 amp hours. This Powerstack battery is considerably lighter, so it's easier to keep right on hand. The useable power is every bit equal to the old XR batteries but the runtime seems better than the specs would suggest. I built a 3" thick 4x6 insulated basement door and door frame, then a day off heavy duty basement stairs on one charge, everything being held together with screws. This was in an unheated basement in December in Maine. The cold didn't seem to affect anything with this battery (XR units are also stout at temperatures above 0° Fahrenheit).I also used it around the shop for a week without the battery monitor losing a light.DeWalt says Powerstack batteries will have twice the service life, so I'll edit this or provide a new review I'm a couple years. It could be a lot longer, though, since the XR batteries already have an outstanding service life.As a professional carpenter I would guess I have between 50 and 60 batteries. Many of them predate XR technology and some go back to when DeWalt debuted the 20v line right or nine years ago. In that time I've had only two fail, so the Powerstack series should be around a while. One thing I didn't see coming was the rubber on the bottom of the battery. It's overmolded, so the rubber-like material goes up the sides. It's a really nice touch if you work inside, especially in other people's houses, because you don't get sharp looks when you set it on furniture. It's a tiny fetal but it speaks to DeWalt's continuing effort to engineer a better product in every way. I own over $50,000 in DeWalt tools for exactly this reason; I like their approach. I like their approach to this battery, and intend to buy more of especially as larger amp/hour units come into the market.

SO MUCH BETTER

I refuse to review anything before I get the opportunity to use it my self. I have been able to use this myself for the last couple of weeks and have been absolutely blown away by its performance. The first thing I noticed when I opened it was the build quality was substantially better feeling the the old batteries were all used to. It has a nicer overmolded rubberized bottom with a rugged feeling case and a much better and brighter battery status indicator lights.During use you wouldn't expect much if anymore performance since this and the old batteries are rated and near the same capacity. What that doesn't account for is this battery can support a much higher instantaneous amperage draw. On my compact drill the power difference running this battery is like its a different drill. Switching between this and the old compact batteries you will feel the difference more then you would imagine especially running in larger screws or drilling holes using a self feeding bit. While the standard 18650 cylindrical cells are well know in almost every power tool battery besides this. Almost every electric vehicle, new laptop, cellphone, utility electric grid storage and ect is going towards pouch style cells which this battery has. It makes so much sense for a drill battery to use the same due to all of the advantages they provide. While i'm happy with my current dewalt batteries in the 5ah and above range I love having theses for there compact size and ease of use. This battery has replaced my use on all most all of my larger batteries. If dewalt starts building larger batteries in this form factor I will buy those.

Small case, HUGE POWER

This little battery really packs a punch! I received this battery right before Christmas, and used it on many different jobsites. It is incredibly small and lightweight, it almost feels like a toy compared to the DCB203. One day I used it for framing with my 20v impact (DCF887) to run 3" deck screws, and it lasted for over 4 hours of heavy use. I like running the small batteries for weight, and compared to the other 20v 2ah and 3ah batteries, this unit has such a small footprint! In many cases it's slightly smaller than the base of the tool. This is great for lighter weight on the tool bag, and the Powerstack delivered consistent power. It charges very quickly on the fast charger as well, so two of these batteries will keep your impact going all day long. The only ... MoreThis little battery really packs a punch! It charges very quickly on the fast charger as well, so two of these batteries will keep your impact going all day long. The only drawback one might consider, is with an oscillating tool or a similar tool where you want the larger battery case to help it stand up. In those cases I like the 3ah with the 21700 cells.I later ran the Powerstack battery outside, cutting cement backer board in very cold weather. I was using my oscillating tool in a pinch, with a diamond grout blade. This was a heavy application and the battery delivered incredible power!! It cut almost 20 linear feet before needing a charge, which is incredibly impressive for its size and the extreme cold. I try not to run batteries all the way down to make them last, so when it hits one bar, throw it on the charger. This battery was really comfortable on the 20v sander (DCW200) as well, with the reduced weight and improved balance, it was more ergonomic during extended use. Compared to the DCB230 battery I usually run on the sander, the Powerstack battery is about half the size and less than half the weight.I also couldn't resist trying it on bigger tools and it really impressed me. It cut plywood no problem with the circ saw, and even runs the big hammer drill (DCD999) in a pinch. I am excited about this new technology, and can't wait to see it applied to the Flexvolt batteries to reduce their weight, or even a 20v 4ah Powerstack battery. I'll definitely be filling my Toughsystem battery box with a few more of these.

And to top it off, they added a nice rubber bottom so it didn’t scratch my new mantle. My only problem with it is, and it’s the same problem I have with all Dewalt batteries, that it sometimes gets stuck when trying to detach the battery from the tool. It’s almost like the detach button doesn’t push down enough. But with needing to replace the batter half the time as before, it didn’t really bother me that much.

Unexpected Performance in a smaller battery
4 January 2022

After I received the kit I immediately noticed the size and weight difference. The battery is 1/2" shorter and narrower than my DCB203 and definitely lighter. As I started testing in several tools I found it to be very comfortably balanced in the smaller, lighter tools. It provided good balance and no bulk in my Flashlight, impact driver or oscillating tool. When I tested the feel in my DCD998 Hammer Drill, initially I felt like I needed more weight in the battery in order to balance the tool to my comfort. While the battery is narrower and shorter, the length advantage is negated when the battery is placed in the tool because of the piece on the rear of every tool where the battery connects. It also tended to take a couple of tries to get the release lever down properly to remove the battery from a tool. I noticed the release lever protruded slightly from the battery unlike the DCB203 or DCB205. I didn't have any problems hitting the lever unintentionally but it did release differently than the old design where I thought it was stuck on the tools a couple of times. The performance in the flashlight and impact driver was as expected, I didn't test the runtime to exhaustion but the flashlight was on for 6+ hours and the battery was still at 2 bars (51-74%) and battery was cool. In the oscillating tool the Powerstack made a noticeable improvement when compared to the DCB203, 2aH. I don't ever use the DCB203 in the oscillating tool because it cuts so slowly where the Powerstack performed the similarly to my 5aH battery I usually use but with much better balance in the tool. I also tested the battery in my DCD998 while drilling some holes and I didn't notice a significant difference in power from the 5aH battery and the balance was better while using the tool than I initially expected. I also tested the batter on my Blower (DCBL722P1) and it again worked great. Again, I didn't test the tool to exhaustion of battery but it was light and comfortable any reduction in runtime wouldn't be a big issue since it is half the weight of the 5aH battery. I frequently just grab my DCB609 Flexvolt 9aH battery when using the blower because I never have to consider battery life but at 20% of the weight I'll use the Powerstack since it's so much lighter even if it means I need to grab a second battery at some point for long jobs.Overall, I was very impressed by the power of the Powerstack battery and the weight was really a difference maker when using the tools for a longer period of time. I'll definitely be looking at getting more of these batteries especially as the capacity increases. The performance and weight improvements significantly outweighed the small hassle with the release lever.

Well suited for short-term lightweight jobs
16 December 2021

Summary:It's a decent battery that does what it's supposed to. It's great on flashlights and tools where you don't set it down with the battery as a base. It's great for short term projects because of it's high current delivery, but lower capacity (1.7Ah) restricts it to the kind of project you'd use the normal DCB203 (2Ah) for. If it delivers on it's promise of 2x lifespan (charge cycles) then it is worth the purchase for those tools you go through the small batteries with. The Good:-It's small (narrow), lightweight, and offers high current delivery through high and medium charge states.-If it does have 2x the lifespan (charge cycles) compared to the DCB203 then that's an absolutely great feature right there.-It is well suited to flashlights, the grease gun, ... MoreSummary:It's a decent battery that does what it's supposed to. Normally I have to use a 4Ah battery to get it reasonably hot enough but the extra current delivery on this battery made it so I could use the smaller one. The 4Ah lasts longer of course, but for a small job the small battery is perfect.-The over molded case seems like it would offer good protection from falls. I have cracked my older batteries before on drops. The not so good:-Because it is narrower, taller, an lighter than the DCB203, it is easier to knock over your tools. Personally I set my tools down on the battery (it is wet where I live and I don't want the cooling intake to get water in it) and with a gentle bump my cordless drill went right into the mud. Because of this, it limits the suitability of the battery when applied to some tools in my use cases.-The shape of the battery release changed, and it seems like the spring is stronger too. Because the shape changed, the plastic release lever tends to bind a little and you have to press much harder to get it to release. Maybe it just needs to 'wear in'. Putting some gear oil on these surfaces helped a little bit, but the lever sticks out past the body of the battery so it seems like it was shoved in around the geometry of the battery cells.

Won’t buy power stack again
19 January 2023

I’m a Dewalt guy, love Dewalt tools. I was looking forward to this battery. I pre ordered a 2 pack within a week one battery would not charge. Called and Dewalt did replace the battery, about 3 weeks later another one went wouldn’t charge or hold the charge indicator light said fully charged but it wasn’t. Again I called and again Dewalt did replace the battery. I have had bad luck with these batteries and will never buy them again. I’m content with the batteries they already had out. Only positive take away was the customer service and how quickly they sent me new batteries. So 5 star on the customer service 0 stars on the power stack battery.

You need to buy this one now!

We have been installing warehouse storage racking that needs to be anchored to the concrete floor with 3/8" concrete anchors. To drill the holes for the anchors we used a 20v Dewalt Hammer Drill and the new Powerstack battery. We noticed an significantly longer run time on the new battery vs. the regular 20v max batteries we had been using. We also noted that Powerstack battery did not heat up as much as the older style batteries. Charging time was very quick so we were able to put many cycles of recharging during the project. We also need to lay 30 sheets of OSB for a tool shop. Put the Powerstak battery in my Dewalt 20v 6.5" circular saw and went to town. The battery powered thought the OSB with no issues. Wore out several #2 Philips heads bits and it just kept the power flowing. Will be buying many of these to enhance my tool collection. They are light weight, powerful, run cool and charged quickly.Far exceeded my expectation! This battery is truly an upgrade and every one that owns Dewalt 20v tools should be buying these as soon as they can.
