My family and I have been buying DeWalt products since the 1990s. I'm a die-hard DeWalt supporter. But this screwdriver is horrible. The worst part is the bit storage. The bits are hard to get out, and impossible to get back inside, in such a way that they'll actually stay in place. While you're using it, you constantly hear the bits rattling around. When you open it, many of the bits are loose, and come flying out. VERY easy to misplace bits, and is extremely unsafe if you're working on a ladder or in a confined space, because you're constantly climbing down or changing your position to pick up lost bits. Mine is extremely difficult to slide the bit carrier out, so I can't even "ease" it out in an effort to not drop all the bits. The bit holder is extremely bulky ... MoreMy family and I have been buying DeWalt products since the 1990s. The ratcheting mechanism and handle seem stout enough, but their quality is offset by the poor ease of use.Very disappointing, especially from a brand like DeWalt. I'd have expected these design flaws from a typical big-box store's in-house brand, but not from a professional-grade company like DeWalt. Very sorry I purchased this piece.

I just purchased the DeWalt Ratcheting screwdriver. I am not mechanically inclined to say the least and I thought I was crazy and too stupid to figure out how to store the tips in the handle until I started reading the reviews. Then I noticed on the package is states (up to 12) and that should have given me a hint. The whole point of the product is to have the tips available in the tool handle while you are working so you do not have to stop and look for them. In addition you have to find a place to store them in another container. Hopefully the screwdriver will last and not have quality issues like other customers have experienced. I feel reassured with the Lifetime Guarantee. If it doesn't work like it is designed to I can request a replacement under the warranty.

I recently purchased this screwdriver at my local Tractor Supply Co. and was disappointed with the HORRIBLE storage in the handle. They are plastic and do not reliably hold the bits and difficult to pull out the one you need without knocking out the ones that you've stored since they aren't tightly secured in the slots. Who would want to use this tool while on a ladder if they'd have to climb up and down to fetch the bits that you drop or falls while changing a bit? I always prefer Dewalt tools but this is flat out an embarrassment and overpriced tool if I am just going to be using the ratcheting feature. The ratcheting part of the screwdriver works well and can be switched and locked in both directions.(Hence why the Quality is only marked Average) Not in any way a ... MoreI recently purchased this screwdriver at my local Tractor Supply Co. and was disappointed with the HORRIBLE storage in the handle. However this screwdriver is not one I can recommend because it fails to live up the expectation I have come to love about the brand.

This multi bit ratcheting screwdriver fails because its storage of the bits went backwards on previous designs. Rating would be improved if this was a one bit ratcheting screwdriver, as it was easy for my wife to use when set up ready to use. But any long term user will quickly learn the bit storage becomes a loose storage only zone, and thus dumps out on you when purposefully and accidentally opened. Thus you have store the bits separately, defeating the primary aspect this tool was designed around. This was the only DeWalt tool I have ever discarded in the trash. I kept the bit shaft and use that as a bit extension for my drills. This was an impulse purchase during xmas shopping, should have read reviews first.
As has been said in many of the other reviews, the bit storage design on this tool is frankly unusable. The ratcheting mechanism and handle both live up to the Dewalt quality I’ve come to expect. However, because the bit storage area is tethered within the shaft, once it slides out, the pressure needed to replace a bit in the lower section forces the entire part back into the handle. If the pop out storage locked in an open position, it might be possible to securely place the bits in their slots (although I’m not convinced of this). After much research for the specific features including standard hex bits, ratcheting mechanism, magnetic shaft and on board storage I was excited to find this item at my local true value that seemed to meet all of my criteria. After much research for the specific features including standard hex bits, ratcheting mechanism, magnetic shaft and on board storage I was excited to find this item at my local true value that seemed to meet all of my criteria. However, after struggling with the loose/flying bit issue a handful of times, This tool has made simple jobs more difficult and I will hesitate to trust the dewalt name in the future.
Looked like a really great tool, but has a few serious design mistakes. The bits do not clip well into the base and rattle around a lot, and the way the bottom opens always makes them spill out. Horrible. The long piece that holds the bits can also seperate from the handle which could be helpful but often pops out or seperates too. The ratchet is so handy but it's not very clear to tell which position it's in without turning it. Also because the handle is rounded it often rolls off surfaces that are not 100% level
From the moment I was finally able to remove the packaging I have never been able to move the ratcheting action from one position. I've tried everything short of two opposing pliers to go from tightening to loosening without success. What's more, the in-handle bit storage is absolutely useless, except when the tool is put away. The bits can't be secured in place and fall out as soon as it's opened. Profoundly dissatisfied.
I purchased this a week ago. After getting it home the ratcheting mechanism felt wonky and would freeze up occasionally. I exchanged it for a new one and tested it in the store first. Well, as best as I could because of the packaging. It worked great for about an hour into assembling a dresser then it failed the same way the first one did. This one has to go back too. It’s a shame because I loved my last Dewalt ratcheting screwdriver. Oh, and yes, the bit storage is worthless. The bits comes loose and your screwdriver will sound like a maraca.
I am not hard on my tools. I normally love Dewalt products, but this thing is helping sway my opinion in the opposite direction. I purchased this driver from the big orange store about one week ago, at first I was a big fan. I needed a ratcheting screwdriver, and this fit the bill. The bit storage is abysmal. You can not even get the bits into the holders without the storage slot sliding back into the handle. That isn't even my main complaint. After just a few uses, the ratcheting action has gotten very rough and is almost un-usable. The action works normally when unscrewing, but when I'm tightening a fastener, I almost can't even turn the driver counter-clockwise. This screwdriver is an enormous let-down.
I bought this along with a few other drivers as needed more while working on computers. While the bit holder on the extension is magnetic, nothing transfers through so there is NO magnetism for any screws. The in handle bit holder is awful, in the cap they are firmly held and hard to get in, in the handle side they rattle around and fall out if gravity approves. The ratchet works, but I cant use this with computer screws as they'll just fall off the bit.Worst Dewalt Product I've ever purchased.
