The LiDAR focus system makes it easier to focus during handheld shots without having to rely on the surface structure of the subject. This is particularly useful in low-light environments and offers exceptional capabilities when focusing. The LiDAR rangefinder (RS) can detect subjects up to 14 meters away with 43,200 measurement points and features an integrated camera with an equivalent focal length of 30 mm and a wide field of view of 70°. This covers most focusing requirements. Together with the focus motor (2022), it also enables autofocus with manual lenses. With the LiDAR rangefinder (RS), the RS 3 Pro supports ActiveTrack Pro and provides improved subject recognition and tracking performance. Included are LiDAR rangefinder (RS) × 1, multi-camera control cable (USB-C, 30 cm) × 1, LiDAR control cable (USB-C, 30 cm) × 1.

BEWARE - NOT COMPATIBLE with raveneye

This is a great example of some engineers not understanding how cameras are operated. When buying this it never even dawned on me that it would not be compatible with the RS3-Pro. Here is the issue: The Lidar unit plugs into the same port the Raveneye plugs into, so you can either get a video feed and have force mobile control, or you can plug the LIDAR unit into the same port and have that work. What you can't have is LIDAR focus with remote video and force mobile control. You are better off buying the cheaper version without the FF motor and without the video transmitter and buy for the money you saved a Nucleus Nano and some small Accsoon vide transmitter. You'll actually get both for less than this LIDAR thing costs. By the way I confirmed all this with a phone call to DJI because I'm still stunned that they would build this without it being compatible with one another.

This is an an amazing tool of you have to do solo or low light shoots. No more worrying about whether what you're shooting is in focus. I have used their 3d focus, but this is autofocus for manual lenses, on overdrive.

I just did a shoot with a set of Sirui Anamorphics on the C70 and this thing was a dream. It nailed focus on everything. I even used it at sunrise in a super dark scene were we could tell if we had focus, even with peaking on. It nailed it. I can't recommend this thing enough. Brilliant piece of gear and the perfect add on for the Ronin 3 Pro.

High Hopes for this! a few minor concerns.
13 December 2022

I haven't had much time to use this yet but I was disappointed to find out that I would have to do some mods to my Sigma 18-35mm in order for it to work. So far I'm seeing that I'll have to create stopping points on my lens in order to get it to work. Also, I really wish this would allow you to use the Raven Eye at the same time but overall I'm psyched at the prospect of this allowing me to have better autofocus on my GH4 & GH5.

Philipp and Joerg are spot-on here.DJI advertises this LiDAR module as if it seamlessly integrates with the rest of the RS3 Pro ecosystem. Except it doesn't.Only after it arrives does it become clear that the RavenEye and LiDAR can't be used at the same time, since they plug into the same port.DJI loves to hype. But doesn't back it up.Definitely returning this useless piece of kit.

New firmware improvements!
17 June 2023

I'm now very impressed since recent firmware update V00.00.0050. I'm using it with the Lumix S5IIX and Sirui Venus 50mm t2.9 1.6x lens and the focus tracking locks on human subject and tracks it quickly and accurately. I'm now blown away on how well this now work!

Not thought through for the real-world
3 August 2022

The good news:the active tracking is improved with RS3 Lidar vs. RS2. Mainly due to using its own camera feed in the Lidar that has a pretty wide angle of view so tracking is less likely to drop. What is also nice that due to this new approach, one doesn't need to mount and power a fiddly Blackmagic SDI to HDMI convert if one uses a professional camera with SDI output (e.g. RED).The bad news:1. This design change now means apparently that the video feed from the LIDAR is not visible in the Ronin app. That is a real design oversight! As a result, one can only set the lidar frame to track and object or person with the tiny touch screen on the gimbal.Of course, when having the gimbal mounted on a jib, maybe somewhere in the air on a high stand, etc., it's ... MoreThe good news:the active tracking is improved with RS3 Lidar vs. RS2. This design change now means apparently that the video feed from the LIDAR is not visible in the Ronin app. That is a real design oversight! As a result, one can only set the lidar frame to track and object or person with the tiny touch screen on the gimbal.Of course, when having the gimbal mounted on a jib, maybe somewhere in the air on a high stand, etc., it's then completely unusable. If the actor walks out of frame briefly, you have to get back to the gimbal tiny touch frame and try to redraw a frame to track the actor again (each time this happens). If an actor, takes a 10 second break, got to start all over. This is not fit for a PRO environment! Also it's difficult to hold the gimbal while marking an object on the little touch screen without accidently moving the object out of frame and then loosing tracking again. Not thought through at all.One key use case for this in a production would be to have a B or C cam without needing an extra camera operator, but now one cannot really set the focus frames from the app so the whole thing is out of the window...2. The DJI Active Track does not actually learn faces or object (compared e.g. to the Edelekrone Vision system), so when a subject exits the frame the tracking is lost. While other systems will recognize the subject again when re-entering the frame and tracking will not be lost. A big difference!3. The object tracking is particularly weak. It's not really learning the object, and then it's sort of tracking possibly the background in the frame ... and the object or a mix of both. Could be way improved compared to other systems.
