But its camera is much the same with a very fast 24mm F1.7 lens (fixed aperture), than can shoot in portrait or landscape orientation. But with the standard battery its flight time is 38 minutes vs the Pro’s 34 minutes. The 3 axis gimbal is extremely fast and stable. I took my first test flight with a 8-10 mph breeze, and I was immediately impressed with how well the Mini 3 handled in the wind, far more stable than I expected. The Mini 3 can use the same snap on filters that Mini 3 Pro uses.My Mini 3 came with the DJI RC (LCD display), but can be flown with the DJI RC-N1 (no LCD display). Having used several drones with my phone as the display, the RC’s LED display was joy to use, it was bright enough to overcome most sunlight, whereas most phones are not nearly bright enough (and add to the weight). The RC had a 5.5” FHD, touch display with a 700nits brightness (few phones are more then 400) and it only weights 390g (<14oz) with a 4 hour runtime. The RC remote has 2 USB-C ports, one for charging, and one for connecting to a computer. It also has a microSD card slot, this card is used for 2 purposes, one to store detailed local maps and to store transmitted video (1080p max) and transmitted photos. The controller uses DJI’s O3 and OC3+ transmission for a max range of 12k (7.5 miles) with the Mini 3, but legally you must keep your drone in sight, which you can’t do with it miles away. But DJI’s great transmission distances are many times further than a Wi-Fi only drone, with a much more stable signal. The controls are very smooth and the joy sticks re-center very quickly. I found that RC remote took 2-3 minutes to acquire 10 satellites. I find in order for return to home to function properly 9 the minimum I’d typically fly with (with 11 or more preferable). The Mini 3s downward sensors allow you to fairly safely fly indoors but if you’re going to do this I’d suggest getting a set of prop guards to protect the propellers from nicking any walls. This Fly More combo comes with three 38min batteries, a 3 battery charger, a padded case, a mini-screwdriver and 3 sets of replacement blades & screws, the RC remote and the Mini 3 drone and 2 USB cables and a gimbal cover (used when storing drone in case). When using the battery charger, the batteries are charged in sequence (the strongest to the weakest, never multiple at the same time). The charger can also connect to the remote, or other devices to charge them. The Mini 3 also supports the ‘Plus’ longer life battery (51 minutes of flying time), but this put the drone over 249 grams (to 287g). It took me about 1 hour to charge each battery. The RC remote has the DJI Fly app already installed, but both the drone and the app needed an upgrade when I first started each. Both of these updates went smoothly once I’d connected to my local WiFi network. The Mini 3 drone has 3 flight modes, ‘C’inematic, ‘N’ormal and ‘S’port. These are marked with C,N & S on the remote. In Cinematic mode the drone fly/s turns slower and smoother, to improve the video quality (less jerky). In Sport mode it will fly much faster and its avoidance sensors are disabled. And any movement of the joy sticks lead to an immediate movement of the drone. In Normal mode small movements’ lead to small changes, in sport mode (which should be called expert mode) the drone reacts much faster to movements. The RC remote has two programmable buttons on the bottom, these can be set to any number of user selected functions. On the Mini 3 drone there is a USB-C charging port/computer connection and a microSD card slot. 4 foldable arms and the removable battery compartment. The first outdoor images I captured were extremely bright, much brighter than I expected. I’m sure the camera fast f1.7 lens had a lot to do with this. Most drone’s I flown have slower lenses f2.4 and higher. This made me appreciate that the Mini 3 can easily accept filters. Having captured video over water before, I’ve experienced how important ND and polarized filters can be to getting decent video in bright environments. With the Mini 3s fast lens, I’ll probably always fly with at least ND8 filter in daylight (this also helps to protect the camera’s lens). Since almost all shooting is done in ‘Auto’ mode knowing how to adjust the cameras manual settings in ‘Pro’ mode I think is essential to improve video quality. When in video mode the controller shows the video options and in photo the photo options (on the touch screen). The bottom left corner displays an Icon showing the drones position from the takeoff location, and its “H”eight and “D”istance away (and rate of change (speed)) from the takeoff location. You can change the take off point to your current location, in the upper right corner by selecting Update “Home Point”, very useful if walking around with the controller and not planning to land where you took off from. The lower right corner shows the storage photo/video options, tapping here brings up the ‘Pro’ options, to change ISO, Shutter Speed, Resolution and FPS rate. The DJI Mini transmits video back to the controller in 1080P but display it on the screen in 720P, so live video appears softer then video played back from the SD card. Not sure why this is, as the Mini 3 Pro apparently does not do this. Keep in mind the highest quality video and images are stored in the SD card in the drone. Its 4K video images are truly sensational. As are the 12MP still images. I attempted some panoramic shots, that were just ok, could be me just learning, or the need to shoot pano when completely still. On the video side there are 5 preset shot types: Boomerang, Circle, Dronie, Helix and Rocket in each you select a subject with an x or by drawing a box around it, then Drone then moves around the object in the pattern selected around the subject. It does this much more accurately than you could do this by hand. In photo mode you can either a single shot, multiple bracketed shots or timed shots. The quality of photos is substantially better than pulling a single frame from a 4K video (which you can also do). You will want to use the DJI Quick Transfer feature which uses WiFi to transfer Video/Images from the drone to your Phone, not when doing this make sure the Drones arms are fully extended (not folded up). The other alternative is to move the microSD card to your computer. The Mini 3 is quite a step up from the Mini 2, pretty much all around, especially with the RC remote, which I truly enjoyed. It made flying so much more natural. Highly recommended, but if cost is not really an object, or is you’re more concerned about hitting objects the Pro’s object avoidance and improved 10 bit video has to be considered. Both are great options, a step ahead of the competition.

There are 3 total batteries included with this set and the batteries offer Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. There are intelligent features built into. The remote with 5.5 HD touch screen serves as a great resource to rely on for clear images of what your drone is able to see. Flying in the wind is simple as this drone can withstand 38kph winds and stay steady. So glad that DJI included a 1 and 1/3 inch CMOS sensor which truly gives professional quality 4K HDR images. I'm a novice drone pilot, and you'll need to register this with the FAA for a small fee.Hands down I think this is a great combo set that gives you the drone and accessories you'll want to help ensure you can get maximum flying time and protect your drone while in transit. Downloading content from the drone to my iPhone is a simple process and works very well to help edit and showcase my footage with others.

I LOVE THIS DRONE!DJI has smashed a game winning grand slam with their Mini 3! There is everything to love, and nothing to hate. Whether a beginner, intermediate, or experienced pilot you'll find yourself in amazement at everything DJI has packed into their Mini 3.First, and most obvious, is the size. Don't let the small footprint fool you. There is more than meets the eye here. With side folding wings the Mini 3 is incredibly compact and stores easily. The 249g weight adds to its ease of storage and portability. At first glance, especially for those with less experience, you might dismiss the Mini 3 as a low tier or toy-like drone. You would be incredibly mistaken to do so.While lightweight, the build quality is excellent. Aesthetically pleasing, no loose or wobbly connections or joints. The Mini 3 is well made and DJI has given much attention to detail. So what are they packing inside this small form factor? Well how about excellent wind resistance (level 5), stable video and hover in those higher winds, great battery life, 4K HDR video, true vertical photography and videography, cinematic mode, sport mode, return to home, automatic takeoff, QuickShots effects, and the incredible DJI RC controller.DJI has done a great job making the Mini 3 an easy to use drone for new or novice pilots, without sacrificing advanced functions for more experienced pilots. Neither user will be bored or disappointed, and the newer pilots can continue to use this as they gain experience, making this a longevity purchase. Features like auto takeoff allow the drone to automatically takeoff and enter a 4' hover with the simple tap of a button. Experienced pilots can also perform manual takeoffs. Just one example of how the Mini 3 serves varied experience levels. The combination of gimbal performance and wind resistance allow for great videos and photos even in less than desirable weather conditions. The Mini 3 produces stunning videos! Between the available 4K HDR and multiple QuickShot video effects, pilots can create some truly unbelievable and breathtaking shots. Take a look at the DJI website for examples of each QuickShot effect.Battery life is quite good. I have average approximately 27-29 minutes of flight time per battery. Obviously mileage will vary by user and dependent upon flying conditions, flight mode, hovering time, and other factors. The DJI RC controller is the heartbeat of this setup. With the built in 5.5" FHD screen, the pilot no longer has to use their phone as the screen. The DJI Fly app is built into the controller, pilots can simultaneously view the drone video, distance, altitude, battery life, and other parameters. Video and photo controls are right at their fingertips as well. 700 nits of brightness allow great viewing even in bright conditions. The control sticks are responsive, provide a solid feel with buttery smooth control, and conveniently store on the back of the remote when not in use. Two programmable buttons on the back allow even more customization.Flying the Mini 3 is a dream. The drone is responsive with minimal lag. Combined with all the features, flight modes, excellent controller, great battery life this is simply one of the most fun and enjoyable drones to fly. I could literally go on and on about how much I truly love the DJI Mini 3. I cannot say enough great things about it. I highly recommend this drone to anyone and everyone. Novice or expert, I think you will love piloting the Mini 3.

The ease of use, flight abilities and image quality of this tiny UAV are punching way above their weight class! That you no longer need your phone and all the hassle that entails to fly is a godsend in itself. If you are presenting footage or images on social media, you won't be able to tell the difference between this and the Mavic 3 UAV range.Get yourself a set of good quality ND filters from Freewell, the DJI ones are not that good, unfortunately. The Fly More package makes perfect sense to be able to fly almost without limitations, as you can rotate spent batteries and charge them while you are flying. It takes just over ninety minutes to fully charge the batteries if you have the right type of charger. The padded carry case with the Fly More pack is so convenient and tiny, you can fit it in your backpack easily, unlike attempting to do this with the larger Mavic Pro series of UAV's.Tracking has been improved a lot over previous models, and through use of these abilities you can capture epic movement while staying locked onto your subject; which doesn't have to be centred in the frame either. If you have the Mini 1 or 2 series ultralights this is a serious step up in image quality, flight abilities, steadiness and ease of use; still not as stable as any of the Air or Mavic series UAV's but you can't expect that in such a tiny and light device if you are honest with yourself. It's not really a professional machine by any means, but is an amazing UAV for the ultralight category, with an amazing feature set of abilities which can create incredible footage if you know how to manually operate and control a camera.

Fantastic Drone for beginners with many features
20 December 2022

I have had many drones over the years, from the simplest to the most sophisticated with zoom lenses, etc.The DJI Mini 3 is a very capable small compact and lightweight drone, aimed at the beginner market. The interesting thing about the DJI mini three is it has many features that you would expect to find on some of the most advanced drones, including 4K video (albeit at at 30 FPS) and the trick shots that we have grown to know and love from DJI, including the dronie, the boomerang, etc.If you are new to the drone world, any drone that is 250 g or more needs to be registered with the FAA, less than 250 g and the drone does not have to be registered. The DJI Mini 3 with the regular capacity battery comes in at 249g which leaves it under the 250g threshold, and therefore does not need to be registered with the FAA.The DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo RC comes with the drone, three batteries, battery charging station, remote control with beautiful LCD screen and extra propellers, in case of damage, along with a very small Phillips head screwdriver, as these blades are changed by removing the screw that fastens them to the motor. With the utilization of the DJI RC there is no need for you to use your cell phone as a screen for drone operation which is a great feature and one of the main reasons why you should consider this kit.Once I took the drone, the batteries, battery, charger, and DJI RC, out of the box. I put the batteries and controller on the charger. They both charged rather quickly, and I was ready to fly.As with almost all electronics, I immediately had to update to the latest firmware, and once that was done, I was good to go.The DJI Mini 3 grabbed enough satellites in my area to get a GPS signal, which enables it to record the home point where you are taking off and so it can land easily and accurately once done with your flying session.I took off and started taking pictures and video. Video looks great but again as mentioned earlier the 4K is only at 30 frames per second, you can get 60 frames per second at 2.7 K however and photos look great, however photos are only 12 megapixels which limits image quality somewhat.Of note was the flying time which is advertised at 38 minutes, I experienced around 29 minutes flying time but when I was flying for this review, it was somewhat windy so that will limit your flying time as the drone continues to fight the wind to keep position. While the DJI Mini 3 is billed as a drone for beginners, a major feature it lacks, when compared to more advanced drones, are collision avoidance sensors. There are two sensors on the bottom to help assist in landing, but there is no forward, side or rear collision avoidance sensors on this drone. Therefore, keeping the DJI mini three within eye line is more important and or making sure you are not backing up while flying or flying to the side without understanding your surroundings, as you will crash. With the three batteries in the included carrying case, you have the ability for some long flying sessions which is what having a drone is all about. As mentioned earlier I have had, and have a number of more advanced drones than the DJI mini three however, this drone is very quickly becoming my favorite as it is small and compact, and I envision myself taking it everywhere with me.I would not hesitate to get this drone.

Fun and quality, easy to use

I have always wanted to try out drone photography and finally given a chance with this DJI Mini 3 I am very happy to be able to say it is a phenomenal little device. It is very easy to use, extremely compact, and this Fly More kit which includes 3 batteries, a sequential charger, a carrying case with space for everything, replacement blades, and cables is feature complete except for needing a micro SD card and a 30 watt or greater USB C power supply. Getting started is easy. It walks you through the whole process on the controller screen, from getting connected to updating to flying. Getting started is easy. It walks you through the whole process on the controller screen, from getting connected to updating to flying. I live in a city within a restricted airspace zone making it a little more complex as I need to request permission to fly via LAANC to fly around my house or nearby parks, but I can also drive outside town and be able to fly it without that extra step. On screen it shows you how to control everything and gives you a full tutorial on how to control it and fly safely. Even as a novice drone user I was able to quickly begin to familiarize myself with the basics and get flying. I spent time flying around my culdesac and taking pictures of my surroundings from a new perspective I had not had before during my first flight. The 4K camera takes stable and clear photos that look fantastic on both the controller screen and once I transferred them to my iPhone which was also fast and easy. Battery life is great at about 35 minutes per battery so with this kit you can fly for over 1.5 hours before running out of juice as long as you land and change batteries when necessary. Taking off and landing is also smooth with the automatic settings it has, and once you get used to the movements with the two control sticks you can feel comfortable quickly. It has a very strong range, I never have any issues with connectivity between the drone and controller, and as long as you are paying attention to where you’re going you can have a great time. For beginners like me who have been interested in drone photography and flying this has made me a real believer. I was always slightly intimidated by the idea and thought it would be challenging but with the DJI mini 3 I am now excited about it and can’t wait to get great pictures from heights and perspectives I could not previously achieve. I can’t think of a better way to get into a new hobby and art form and I cannot recommend this enough.

It may be the perfect starter drone
19 December 2022

I love this drone, but I’m not convinced that it is really awesome for photographers or media creation. If you are interested in learning to fly and focused on that as well as maybe grabbing an awesome photo or video or two that this is the perfect drone for you. The main reason I feel like this is more for the beginner that a content creator is the obstacle avoidance tech that is missing in this one compared to the pro version. When I am paying more attention to the content I can miss obstacles, which is why I think obstacle avoidance is a content creators friend most of the time. It is also missing follow me which is something that I like to use and the fact that it is missing is big for me. It is also missing follow me which is something that I like to use and the fact that it is missing is big for me. Honestly those two features are main two features that I feel like make or break this drone for people depending on why type of content creation you are into. Now for the rest, I’m not exactly what you would call a pro level content creation artist. I create content but I depend heavily on that auto mode, and for that this drone is everything that I need out of a drone. The videos look awesome, the photos are clear, and I am more than thrilled what can be captured with this.I have the remote controller with the screen and that is a such a better setup than using my phone. I used to be of the opinion that the smartphone was just such a smart way to not need a giant controller, however, I have changed my mind completely on that having used a full remote controller for a while. If you are just getting into it and don’t mind the dual use, using your phone for the controller screen is a great way to save a little money, but honestly, if you can I would absolutely recommend the fully dedicated controller. Multiple batteries are a little bit of a must as well, while this battery actually lasts longer than the pro, one battery is never enough fly time. So, all in all I can easily recommend this drone, I absolutely love it, for the right person. If you are just getting into flying drones and it is more about flying than content, than you will love this drone as it requires you to fly it. If you think you might use the follow me and obstacle avoidance; I would really recommend seriously considering the mini 3 pro versus just the mini as you may end up buying twice. I know that my kids want to get into flying drones and the mini 3 is the perfect starter drone for them (I wasted too much money on lesser drones to even try those first at this point). For a starter drone, this takes off, flies steady, and makes learning a breeze.

Perfect Video Drone Starter Kit

The Drone itself has a protector for the camera + gimbal setup, which you should remove before powering up (I’m mentioning this because it’s not in any non-app setup documentation - it’s in the PDF manual). The Drone is ready in approximately 30-60 minutes after unboxing (depending on battery levels). The arms unfold to form the X shape and the remote control connects quickly and easily to the Drone. The Remote Control also handles all the firmware updates and such. When ready to put the Drone away, you re-fold the arms and tuck it away. The whole setup is about as small as a medium size coffee cup. It’s also super light. The entire set (including the extra batteries, charger, remote, and Drone) fits inside the carry case, which is about the size of a lunchbox. On your first flight, the Drone has a tutorial mode (skippable) that walks you through takeoff, landing, and the automated features. The Drone also conducts self-checks and lets you know if something is wrong (e.g. if the gimbal is stuck or if the compass needs calibrating). You can set the Drone for cinematic mode (it slows response) or sport mode (speedy response) on the remote control. Other easy-to-activate settings, like camera orientation and automatic flight (called QuickShots), are available on the screen. There are also two customizable buttons on the remote, as well as an easy “return to home” button if something goes wrong. You can also set the specifications for the flight in advance: flight ceiling, distance from home, etc. I regularly got about 30 minutes of flying time (more if I didn’t go for crazy maneuvers). The interface has every bit of info you need and want - showing you exactly how much battery life is left, the height, flight metrics, connectivity data, etc., making the more daring maneuvers more fun and accessible. Takeoff and landing are a breeze (automated for the most part). Beyond that, DJI’s interface makes safe flying super easy, which in turn means that it’s a lot easier to grab great shots. The 4K video in lower-light conditions was as spectacular as the bright-light conditions. Exciting shots are possible, even for newbies, and DJI offers a lot of insight into how to do all sorts of things with each kind of Drone (they do this on their other cameras, too, but Drone content is a different animal). My only note is that if you're both new to drone flying AND new to aerial photography and videography, give yourself a bit of grace while you learn the ropes. While you can get some really cool shots in the first few outings, the content you create will suffer if you don't work to gain experience on the flying side - fortunately, this is a great platform to learn on.The one thing missing for newbies is obstacle avoidance, but it’s not a dealbreaker as this is available in the Pro model.DJI delivered an excellent Drone in the Mini 3 to capture stories, videos, and photos of your town or nature from unique angles. Because of the care and attention put into the little details (like flight stability and easy-to-access cinematic modes) and big details (like battery life and image quality), exploring new ways to tell stories is easy and fun.

Worthy successor to my original Mini
21 December 2022

The DJI Mini 3 is a nice step up from my original DJI Mini and offers numerous improvements. Like previous models, including the Mini 3 “Pro” variant, the Mini 3 still weighs under 250 grams, which classifies it as an ultra-light drone. I specifically purchased my original Mini for this reason because it meant I was not required to register it with the FAA. Despite not requiring mandatory registration, recreational use of the Mini 3 and other sub-250-gram drones is still subject to federal, state, and local drone rules and regulations. It’s not as simple as flying a cheap toy drone. Proof of proper operational knowledge is understandably required. Despite not requiring mandatory registration, recreational use of the Mini 3 and other sub-250-gram drones is still subject to federal, state, and local drone rules and regulations. It’s not as simple as flying a cheap toy drone. Proof of proper operational knowledge is understandably required. This includes taking and passing an approved air safety course like The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). The course and test are free and are readily available online from several sources. Taking and passing TRUST will help familiarize new drone pilots with safety tips, rules, and regulations that every drone operator absolutely should know. Proof of passing must also be shown to law enforcement personnel upon request. I keep a printout of my TRUST certificate inside my drone’s carrying case. That way I ensure it is always on my person whenever I fly.The Mini 3 Fly More bundle ships with the Mini 3 drone, three standard intelligent flight batteries, the DJI RC controller with color display, intelligent battery charging hub, two USB cables, three sets of extra propellers w/precision screwdriver, and a carrying case w/shoulder strap. No AC charging adapter is included, although it honestly should be. I purchased a DJI 30-watt adapter but in the interim used a 45-W USB-C laptop charger for the charging hub and a spare USB-C phone charger for the remote. All charging ports are USB-C. Both the remote and drone also have slots for micro-SD cards. The SD card for the remote replaces previously used smartphone storage and allows downloading media from the drone to the remote. The initial setup was simple. I already have a DJI account, so my setup steps were:• Charge everything• Connect the RC remote to my home Wi-Fi• Log into the remote with my DJI account• Activate the remote and aircraft on my account• Update firmware on both drone and remoteAfter that, I was all ready to fly. The RC remote is phenomenal compared to the original DJI Mini C2 remote. The full color screen is large, bright, and vivid. I have no problem viewing the screen in bright afternoon sunlight. The RC remote operation is nearly identical to using the DJI Fly app through a smartphone. The only downside to the RC, and it’s a big one, is that it is not currently compatible with the original Mini nor the Mini 2. It only works with the Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro and other newer DJI models. If I fly both Mini drones, I must carry two separate remotes and use the DJI app through my smartphone for the older Mini. Not ideal but beyond my control. Another thing is that the RC does not have cellular capability. Connectivity is vital for real-time alerts or airspace changes. Although not required, I paired the RC to my smartphone Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure all features work properly in the manner which I’m accustomed to.Like previous Mini models, the Mini 3 is a joy to fly. It’s the perfect starter drone because it’s small enough to not be intimidating yet powerful enough to offer a genuine drone experience rather than feeling like a toy. It’s also suitable for experienced fliers who simply want a smaller more compact “pocket” drone. It won’t quite fit inside a pocket (unless wearing cargo shorts) but does fit in the palm of a hand. Flight times are impressive despite the tiny size. The included intelligent flight batteries provide close to 40 minutes flight time per battery. The Mini 3 is slightly larger than my original Mini and has warning lights on the props, a feature my original Mini doesn’t have. I don’t fly at night, but I prefer drones that have lighting or some sort of improved visibility. The Mini 3 flies remarkably stable for a small lightweight drone, even in moderate wind. It responds well to controls and can achieve impressive altitude and speed. The Mini 3 has downward facing obstacle sensors but none for the front or back. Additional sensors would be nice but it just means I must be more careful when flying near trees or structures. I typically stay far away from both anyhow. Camera operation is simple and intuitive, just like flying. The gimbal image stabilization works amazingly well and most captured video footage is so steady, people don’t realize it was taken with a drone until I tell them. The addition of 4K/30fps and HDR are welcome improvements over the original Mini camera. Those were the two features I coveted the most when comparing my original Mini to other DJI drones like the Air 2at the time. I captured a ton of gorgeous photos and videos with the original Mini yet I already see a noticeable improvement in quality with the Mini 3 camera. One notable new feature is the ability to capture true portrait orientation. This is helpful for sharing captured files via text and social media. The Mini 3 folds neatly closed for storage when finished flying and the entire kit fits neatly inside the included carrying case. When required, minor routine maintenance, such as propeller swaps, is also easy to perform.I can’t speak for Mini 2 or Mini SE owners but the Mini 3 Fly more combo is unquestionably a worthy upgrade for original Mini owners. The improved batteries, camera, lighting, and styling would be good enough, but the DJI RC remote almost makes a compelling enough argument alone for upgrading. After using it a few times, I was not at all happy with being forced to remove my smartphone from its snug case, line it up correctly on the DJI C2 remote, and fight to attach the short interface cable between the phone and remote just to fly my original Mini. I never invested in DJI’s smart controller because, well, price. But the RC controller is priced much more wallet friendly, even as a stand alone accessory. Just a shame it doesn’t currently work with any pre-3/3Pro Mini models. However, DJI promises the RC will support additional models in the future. Hopefully, the original Mini is on that list.
