Better Camera Solution

I am a professional videographer and comercial dUAS pilot. We capture video and stills primarily for local TV commercials and filmmaking. I have found that the X5 micro 4/3 camera is a good solution, offering a few different focal length lenses and a little more control over exposure and focus. These features make a difference in capturing images that clients are paying for. And since my market really can't support a budget for a larger drone that can fly a real camera, this is a good substitute. I would like to see a little more obvious peak focusing highlights on the screen. For a user not accustomed to operating a camera in full on manual mode, the learning curve to get a good image could tend to frustrate, but that's not really the camera's fault. But is a good for what it is.I would recommend it for someone wanting to take their production value up a notch.

Definitely Recommend over the X3 camera!

Purchased this because I needed to shoot at dusk and dawn. X3 camera doesn't hold up after 100 iso. I would say even though it is overpriced it was definitely worth the buy. Clean images even up to 400 iso. I would also recommend the olympus 45mm lens with this. If you have a second operator for the camera, the shots you can get with that lens are amazing.

I found this with the purpose of using the DJI X5 on my octacopter. Turns out, I have used almost everything that came with this setup already and it seems to be performing as it should.

Great Camera!!
22 August 2018

This is an excellent addition if youre looking for better picture and video quality. 4K video comes out excellent and still photos are great. The box came with everything needed for easy installation and it had lens covers and lens hood. The software was already upgraded also.

It's all in the details - or maybe it isn't.

The X5 is better than the X3. I want to be clear and upfront about that. If you work at it, your images and video will be far superior to that of the X3 camera. The problem is the work at it part: I purchased the Inspire 1 2.0 on special but wasn't happy with the camera so off I went looking through DJI's options and the X5 was perfect, so I ordered it. Well, it wasn't perfect. Here's what you need to know: 1. The X3 and X5 cameras have an identical bitrate, so compression rates on video and photos are going to be about the same. If you're thinking of getting the X5 because of all the artifacts and noise found in the X3, like I did, you need to be prepared for the possibility that you're not going to get what you want out of the X5. 2. The X3 Camera has an infinite fixed focus lens and no aperture control. This is part of the reason you'd be unhappy with what you get out of the X3. The X5 has conventional focus and aperture control granting you much more creative control, like a dSLR. What is does NOT have is Auto Focus (follow focus). You must constantly refocus your shots by taking your screen. This also means you're not going to be able to get away with using an iPhone. Now that focus is constantly being lost, a large screen is a requirement. 3. True creative control can not be attained by simply setting your X5 and flying around. You must constantly focus AND adjust aperture (and maybe even ISO) if you're going to get the results you want and that would be fine if humans had 4 arms, but we don't. So flying with the X5 or X5R is also (and this is according to DJI support themselves) going to require an additional remote for dedicated camera control and another person to control it. The DJI rep I spoke with acknowledged the lack of clarity in their specifications and provided a little extra unofficial info: The X5 Series cameras, being mirrorless, are capable of true autofocus for both stills and video and the DJI engineering department is on it. :-)

No reviews on this unit as of yet, so here's the skinny

If you are considering purchasing this unit you are most likely a freelance or professional videographer or photographer who like me has come to rely on DJI products, but felt there was always something lacking with their imaging technology.Well here we are, an MFT sensor on a drone, compatible with a variety of lenses and with a spec sheet that rivals the Panasonic GH4. So, is this unit we've been waiting for?Yes and no. First the good. The image this camera produces is much more filmic than the previous X3 camera or Phantom 3 camera. Those units produced an OK (ish) image but it always seemed very video-ey to me. The smaller sensor was not doing the X3 any favours. The iso could not be pushed at all really, and the footage was often mired with compression artifacts and ultimately difficult to grade in post due to the image falling apart. The X5 clearly produces a better looking, cleaner image especially at 2.7k. It is a touch soft at this resolution and softer still at 4k, but once a touch of sharpening is added the image is really quite nice. The biggest difference between this and the X3 is the dynamic range. It really is excellent and is exactly what us pros have been looking for all along. The main issues with the X5 are as follows: While making use of an MFT sensor, the full sensor size is only used in 1080p60 mode, meaning a much smaller portion of the sensor is used for 4k and 2.7k. This is due to a slower SoC that is incapable of processing the full sensor readout at adequate speeds for filming. While this is annoying as we purchased the camera for the MFT sensor, it's not the end of the world as after all, the GH4 is similar. However, in practical application this results in a FOV that is much smaller than what you get with the X3 camera. Almost like the image is too zoomed in. What this means is that with the stock 15mm Leica lens, the camera in follow-mode is very, very difficult to control smoothly. The flight characteristics were not addressed in the Pro firmware to compensate for the extra weight and narrower field of view, so operators who have yaw and arc movements on the X3 down to a fine art will now have to find a new way to capture those shots. This is very frustrating to me and it is my number one gripe with this product. It's like they thought through the camera and drone extensively, but not how they would act together. Now I must use the finger drag on screen trick to move the camera, which is not ideal for a number of reasons. To mitigate this issue slightly I have exchanged the 15mm Leica for the widest compatible lens, the Olympus 12mm test footage I have seen shows slight improvement, but with the weight being the same I predict the same issues. Overall, it is clear that the image this camera is capable of producing is better than the X3 (while still being crippled by a painfully low 60 mbps bitrate). Whether or not it is $$better, I probably wouldn't say so at this point, but DJI has never been known for their outstanding imaging products. The main issue I have is the completely new flight characteristics that make it near impossible to get the same level of movement and complexity of shots as before without having a second operator. Currently the X5 is on it's second FW version, with another supposedly coming out next week. It is difficult to give this camera a positive review considering the gripes I mentioned above, but, I suppose if there is a positive it is that each problem I have found with the X5 can likely be fixed or improved upon with a firmware update. In conclusion, I would recommend the widest possible lens (Olympus 12mm) and make sure you do your homework on this product before purchasing. There is lots of info available online and in forums so I would read through that and other reviews before deciding if the product is right for you.

Refurbished junk!
12 May 2021

The only thing I really see good about this product is that it looks impressive on the Inspire 1. Will not focus clearly no matter what I try. So basically useless. Contacted DJI customer support several times and they just refer me to tutorials, and the last was to ship both drone and x5 all the way to California and I assume at my expense? The x3 works fine on this Inspire so why does DJI need both?

Solid upgrade for the DJI Inspire 1
13 December 2016

This is a solid upgrade for the DJI Inspire 1 from the stock X3. If you're running a two-person flight op (pilot and camera operator) then you'll be set. For a lone pilot, controlling the aircraft, focus, composition and such at the same time can be a lot and may reduce your useable video. Lens choice can help a bit; make sure you use the proper balancing ring for your lens(es).

The DJI X5
17 July 2019

I bought this for my Inspire 1, and it is an amazing camera. It also works with my Osmo with an additional adapter. The image quality is great at 16mp and video capabilities of 4k at 30fps. I generally shoot at 4k 24fps or lower, but there are times I need higher frame rates. Although this is discontinued in the US and the X7 is out, I would highly recommend it. Especially if you can pick one up for a fraction of the price of a X7.

Upgraded my Inspire I
20 February 2018

As I build my photography and drone (sUAS) Company, I upgraded my camera system to this. Due to constant snow and catching the plague, I have only used it like twice at this point. So far, the quality of the raw images are much improved over the stock camera the Inspire I can come with. Additionally, upgrading the system was straight forward, and the aircraft flew practically the same. Still sorting out some of the advance settings, and calibration options but looking forward to using this.
