The NewGen 2 slice toaster in Porcelain arrived in a very sturdy box and was immediately unpacked and, as per instructions, pre-conditioned: this is simply to be , after removing all packing, turned on empty for a couple of minutes. I guess this burns off any unwanted residues. We have successfully and satisfactorily toasted several bread types, in different shapes and sizes, including bagels and hot cross buns.Toasting is consistently good and even.We previously had a toaster which reached 17 years old before acting up as it was mechanically worn out, but it was not as even a toaster as the Dualit. The Dualit toaster makes the claim of sustainability, being of high quality and designed to be repairable, I hope I am still around to see it last until at least 2039 .

We have always had Dualit toasters, but of the bigger 4 or 6 slot variety, at our main house. Just my daughter and I are living in a much smaller apartment now for most of the time, for her school, and so we decided to get a more compact version of our favourite toaster. The 2 slot is adorable! And practical. Highly recommended for small countertops or just one or two people.

I'm a little disappointed with this toaster, for the price I would have expected a lot more. The first problem is that the slots slope diagonally, so if you're toasting anything circular like a crumpet or a scotch pancake, it can roll down and toast unevenly. The proheat elements are very sensitive; 5 seconds too long and you've gone from bread to cinders in an instant, meaning you can't really walk away and do another job whilst you're waiting for your toast, you have to watch it like a hawk.I also found it quite tricky to retrieve smaller, softer items from the toaster as the manual ejector squashes them up against the side. Paired with the super-duper proheat elements, I've ended up with a few cremations! The crumb tray came quite scratched but on ... MoreI'm a little disappointed with this toaster, for the price I would have expected a lot more. I've been waiting to treat myself to one of these gorgeous toasters for years! I love it!! I have the polished finish. It looks great in my new kitchen. I also bought the matching kettle. Hoping they will give me years of pleasure. A timeless classic. I know a few people with these toasters that are 20+ years old! I totally recommend this product for both the design and quality. I love that it is made in the UK and I consider this an investment.
I purchased this toaster on the recommendation of my brother who has owned one for years. Having got rid of my cheap toaster I was excited to receive my lovely looking chrome Dualit Classic toaster, but it didn't last long as I kept getting toast that was cooked more on the one side that the other, so one side would be burning and the other side was a nice brown colour. I toasted as per the instructions, warming up the toaster before putting the bread in, selecting the one slice option but to no avail the inner side of the bread toasted quicker than the outer, leaving me to stand over the toaster and having to turn the bread half way through the toasting.I complained to Dualit about this and the toaster was returned to them via John Lewis, but it came back as not ... MoreI purchased this toaster on the recommendation of my brother who has owned one for years. Should have stuck with my cheap toaster that did a better job.
Definitely not the best thing we've ever bought. It's solidly made and looks good but it really doesn't toast anything other than pre-sliced bread and crumpets successfully. If, like us, you slice your bread yourself, you need to watch it like a hawk. Any slight irregularity in slicing (or in the bread's texture) and it'll be charred as soon as you turn your back. You'll need a pair of toast tongs to keep checking progress and it doesn't even toast both sides evenly. It's a good day if you manage to get something toasted without having to scrape off a blackened border. If you use the toasted sandwich cage, it's virtually impossible to clean bits off the toaster slots. Sadly, it's disappointing and very demanding.
I knew this was a ridiculous price for a toaster before I bought it but I wanted to support british manufacturing and assumed it would be easy to use but I quickly regretted my decision..+ Toasts quickly- Feels a bit rattly and loose when picked up- Slots are not deep enough so top of bread doesn't toast fully- Slots are not long enough to put bread in on it's side to deal with the above issue- The slots are so wide, if you want to toast normal pre sliced bread one side will toast more than the other - I don't want to have to buy and store another accessory to deal with this- Timer dial is annoying! if you want to pull your toast out early you have to either let the timer run and waste power or turn it to 0 which takes a lot of force - the classic pre set ... MoreI knew this was a ridiculous price for a toaster before I bought it but I wanted to support british manufacturing and assumed it would be easy to use but I quickly regretted my decision..+ Toasts quickly- Feels a bit rattly and loose when picked up- Slots are not deep enough so top of bread doesn't toast fully- Slots are not long enough to put bread in on it's side to deal with the above issue- The slots are so wide, if you want to toast normal pre sliced bread one side will toast more than the other - I don't want to have to buy and store another accessory to deal with this- Timer dial is annoying! if you want to pull your toast out early you have to either let the timer run and waste power or turn it to 0 which takes a lot of force - the classic pre set timer and pop up action is much better.Overall, it feels like you're paying for form over function. Expensive mistake :(
Bought this black new gen toaster to replace my 20year + Dualit toaster that suddenly stopped working - got the updated version. We all love the black design and much easier to keep clean than the chrome one! Quieter when toasting and still with 1 / 2 toasting options. Really good product. I suppose its expensive for a toaster but it lasts 20 years + so an investment
Had I not thrown the packaging away then I would have returned this toaster.I was drawn to this item primarily by the 'Made in Britain' label as am a strong believer in local manufacturing. This, combined with the cost, led me to believe that I was going to get something special - sadly it does not seem to be this way for a couple of reasons (from my perspective). The toaster does seem to be well made though and I also like that parts are available in case a repair is needed in future. My main gripes:The couple of brands of bread I use stick out of the top when inserted into the toaster. This means that you have to either stand there and flip the bread over when half way through, or put up with around 10 - 15% of the bread being untoasted. This means that you have to either stand there and flip the bread over when half way through, or put up with around 10 - 15% of the bread being untoasted. If you were to use a type of bread that was smaller and square in shape then I think this would not be an issue but I am not changing my favourite bread brands! When used with the optional Sandwich Cage, the bread sticking out of the top becomes even more of a problem. I got the cage free as part of a current promotion on the JL site therefore saved some money there. However, if I had paid for that on top of the cost of the toaster - then I think I would have been even more dissatisfied. In addition, having made only a couple of cheese toasties so far, I am left with staining to the polished steel surface at the top. Finally, getting your bread toasted to personal preference is by trial and error and something to get used toAll in all, I was expecting more considering the cost.
Decided to replace its predecessor Chrome/black sides which I've had for 40 years where x1 heating element needed replacing. Big mistake. Could write a whole page on its backward design (x2 hideous prods to pull out the tray?) but here's the bottom line - The toasting is erratic and uneven and its USP - the ticking sound while toasting is gone. Don't be fooled by its prop value (like the ubiquitous Australian hand-wash) in all the Interiors mags. Stylists around the world must be getting these for free. Now who was it who said "the consumer is not a moron - she is your wife!"
