Bought 550 Turbo because 450 Turbo is discontinued. Learned that 550 Turbo is not recognized by Dymo Label software version 8 so was forced to use replacement software Dymo Connect. Our workflow is to copy and paste from a Word Document with multiple point sizes and styles for each label but the newer Dymo Connect software does not support this. When pasting the text, it changes it all to the same point size and style. For one of our labels we figured out a workaround to make multiple text fields and then copy and paste multiple times (extra work that we didn't have to do with the 450 Turbo). At this point am looking for third party software that will do what we need. Otherwise will be returning the 550 Turbo and looking for a used 450 Turbo on eBay.

Purchased the Dymo LabelWriter5XL to go into a new office we added as we have several 4XL's as well as 450 turbos all over the organization and love them. Didn't know that Dymo changed the lables to include an RFID label on the roll so that they can prevent non-Dymo labels from being used in the machine. Fair enough, except I have a stockpile of Genuine OEM Dymo labels that I purchased in bulk some time ago that will not work in the new device. This is a Keurig fiasco all over again. To Dymo's credit, when I called in, they offered to mail me a roll to replace the one roll I had in my hand that I confirmed was authentic; however, I'm not doing this with all of the stockpile. Don't get me wrong, the new label concept of drop the roll in and the printer changing the labels automatically for me sounds great; but when you are prohibited from using DYMO labels in the DYMO label printer.. there is a problem with that. In my opinion, if you purchase a piece of hardware, you should be able to use it for anything (legally) you want. While we primarily use authentic DYMO labels in our machines, there are some specialty labels that we use for events in our older machines and create custom labels. This "new" technology prohibits even thinking about that. Very Sad DYMO. I sincerely hope you rethink this business strategy.

Not only that, they leave the displays of the 4XL printers on the shelves, but almost no retailer has a single one in stock. My local stores haven't had one come in since late 2021. They make the 5XLs a tiny bit cheaper to make you feel great about the updated printer. This single-handedly takes advantage of all small business owners that buys their printers. Think about this. If you print 50 labels per day each week, that would come to about 18,000 labels. Roughly $1700/year. If you buy off-brand labels, that would be about $360/year. Get your hands on a 4XL or start using other brands. Dymo may be seeing short gains from doing this disaster of a move, but when business owners see what they are really doing, they will tank.

The DYMO LabelWriter 5XL comes with thr label printer, power adapter, power cable, USB cable, quick start guide, and an extra large shipping starter roll. It has Automatic Label Recognition that instantly recognizes and displays label size, type, and number remaining. This compact device really gets the job done and is perfect for printing any kind of label including Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, and more. But my absolute favorite feature? The fact that there is no need for ink or toner! You can print precise label quantities with ease. Set up was a breeze- you first need to download the software from the quick start guide, you then connect the power to your label writer, then plug it into your computer to get started. Awesome! Why so many fake 5 star reviews on this item? Why is the average rating so much lower for this product on other websites? Anyway, I have three 450s, a 450 turbo and a 4XL... all ok label makers. Dymo doesn't make good label makers, they make cheap label makers and charge a midrange price. I bought this 5XL because my 4XL has constant issues printing, sometimes you need to press the single button, sometimes you need to print a label for a different label maker to trigger the 4XL to work. All Dymo printers use a through head label design, possibly because their cheap plastic cases can't situate a label properly over a thermal head. If you think that causes disastrous paper jams... you have no idea. It can take a full day to fix a jam in one of these flimsy ... MoreAwesome! Why so many fake 5 star reviews on this item? I bought this 5XL because my 4XL has constant issues printing, sometimes you need to press the single button, sometimes you need to print a label for a different label maker to trigger the 4XL to work. All Dymo printers use a through head label design, possibly because their cheap plastic cases can't situate a label properly over a thermal head. If you think that causes disastrous paper jams... you have no idea. It can take a full day to fix a jam in one of these flimsy printers. All those printers are gold compared to this. Used ones are selling for a fortune because the new units are inferior in every way. This 5XL is specifically designed to not print thermal labels... weird right? This machine has been over engineered to prevent it from working... it needs a microchip, only available on certain select Demo branded labels, in order to function. Imagine having to buy Bosch water to run your dishwasher, that's what we're dealing with here. Dymo cannot make a thermal label printer, only a Dymo branded thermal label printer. If you pay a king's ransom to use Dymo's branded paper vs whatever paper you would like to use, your printer gets unlocked... unless that chip fails for whatever reason... or the sensor that reads the chip fails for whatever reason (it will never work again for any paper if that happens). They do give you a cut roll of about 25 labels to get you hooked, so you can just take that chip off that roll and put it inside your Dymo, but you would be limited to 4X6 labels. Have older Dymo labels? This printer won't work. Decide to buy your own paper? This printer won't work. Have some preprinted elements on your corporate label? This printer won't work. See a theme here? What if Toyota didn't feel like engineering their cars to run on regular gasoline and you had to buy special Toyota gas? Would you think they're a good company to work with or particularly good at engineering? The decision to deprecate all older Dymo printers and force users of new Dymo printers to use new Dymo paper or to be locked out of their machines will ruin this company. The board room thought is that they will make more money... but if they don't compete in the corporate market where Zebra dominates, and they force small businesses and home users to return all their new machines as "broken" to the store they purchased from, who will be left to buy $25 paper that has the possibility of breaking? It seems pointless to point out the other sacrifices the 5XL demands of the customers they hate since anyone even remotely considering purchasing this machine deserves what they get. Nevertheless it needs to be said: newer software is needed to lock your printer and prevent you from using it, so this uses Dymo Connect and not Dymo Label. This doesn't mean you can use the printer without Dymo software with regular labels... at least on Mac OS, Dymo software disables security features of your Mac in order to install print drivers that force you to use paper with a chip on it. As if this wasn't all bad enough, now your Mac is vulnerable to Trojan horses and Viruses... because someone at Dymo wanted to trade customer satisfaction for a raise. This software doesn't deserve to be in Alpha phase... it doesn't work. Features like having a clickable running list of the last labels printed, the ability to import information from a CSV file AND add those elements to a label (importing works, applying variables to a label doesn't), and saving profiles for batch printing (probably because the import function is broken) are all gone. No new features were added, except the ability for the software to lock your printer if you attempt to use older Dymo labels, your own labels, or newer labels with a misaligned or damaged chip. UI/UX of this software is FAR more confusing than the software it replaces and most features are buggy and will not implement correctly on your label. The Dymo 5XL is the worst output device I have ever used in my 40+ years of computing. The Dymo Connect App is the worst corporation-created executable I have ever used, baring some infamous software packages that just didn't work.
I've been using this Dymo 5XL thermal printer for around 2 months. After running out of paper, I tried switching over to a cheaper alternative thermal paper of the same size / design. Everything is identical expect the non-genuine thermal paper is missing something. That's the RFID chip that comes with genuine thermal paper. They clam this is to stop excessive printing, misaligned printing & jams. Due to this you are obligated to use their genuine paper which for me in Australia, I have to purchase retails for $146.00 - this is for 200 labels which comes out to be a 0.71cent consumable which could be much cheaper. Aftermarket equivalent can be brought for as cheap as $22.00.- that's an increase of 546%. It should be up to the consumer to take on and manage risk, not the business. To be clear, you'd have to jam, miss or excessive print / waste over 5 rolls to one label print required to end up in a worst position than you are to be forced to by "genuine" labels. Terrible effort. Truly an example of business going out of their way to make it hard for end consumer under the guise of value, when it's in-fact very much the opposite.
I bought it on aftermarket. Someone offered it "open box" from returns for $70. I thought i got a very very good deal. And wondered why people return it. It came with the demo roll and i ordered another 200-label roll anticipating sales on my online store and planning retiring my inkjet printer. Once printing the labels, the demo roll was over and i have another 20 packages to ship same day. Once new roll was installed the printer malfuntcioned. To my surprise it refused to print, stupidly flashing the power light. I spent hours try to trobleshoot insert and pull the paper. Finally i have to run my inkjet again and was later to ship on time. If you plan to buy the printer get older 4XL or other brand. It will save you money in the long term. Stay away from 5XL or Dymo at all. Unless you print in small quantites or accasionly. Seeing positive reviews i am not sure if people count the money in their buisness or just use boss credit card to restock.
This DYMO 5XL labelwriter/printer is a great size for a home office or even an in office workspace where shipping labels are needed often. It came with software that you must install to a PC first. The only reason that I gave this product 4 stars is because because with this 5 XL model, you have to use official DYMO labels with the RFID chips & no others will work (we tried, just to see). So, depending on your needs that could get very expensive to replace the label roles. However, I believe it is still a good quality product & very easy to use. If you're tired of using other means of printing or buying labels & want to do it from your desk, this could be exactly what you're looking for.
Pros: prints labels beautifully, customized labels, prints fast, high-quality Cons: instructions are not clear, only comes with address labels, sticky residue on USB port, not many places to buy labels from, not for 4x6 labels The Dymo LabelWriter 550 is nice! But the website that it initially tells you to go to, when you click on the “download user guides and software” link, it doesn’t make it very clear that you are picking the correct software because the LabelWriter 550 isn’t listed as one of the LabelWriter’s that it supports, but it is the “DYMO Connect v1.4.3” that you need. It took me several minutes to figure that out. Once you download the software, it is all on-screen prompts. This includes multiple restarts of my PC. Once the software is downloaded, the instructions walk you through connecting the power and connecting it to the computer. Something I found quite frustrating was the “stop” sticker attached to the USB port that connects to the computer. When you peel off the sticker it leaves an extremely sticky residue behind on the USB port and I really didn’t want to stick that adhesive into my USB port, so I spent about 5 minutes scrubbing the adhesive off with isopropyl alcohol. This machine comes with one small roll of address labels and no other sizes of labels. I initially thought this was going to work for printing full shipping labels and I was really hoping to try that out but it only came with address labels and only one shipping label that was used for testing the machine. Which, after looking at the test label, I do think it will be too small for printing full-sized shipping labels. Loading the labels was a bit confusing, the instructions left a lot to be desired. I felt like I was guessing and hoping for the best the whole time. Once the labels are loaded, the software automatically detects which labels you’re using and how many there are left. It also switches to that format for designing the label to print. Once you have the labels loaded, that’s where the instructions stop. You’re pretty much on your own as far as figuring out how to use and customize your labels. You can add images, bar codes, clip art, lines, shapes, QR codes, counters, and borders. The software isn’t too difficult to navigate but it did take some time to get it all customized to my linking. This machine prints very high-quality labels, it prints out fast, and then you just tear them off of the machine. They are extremely easy to peel off of the backing and the adhesive is very nice. All in all, this is a really nice label maker. It’s a little confusing to set up, but it’s very easy to use and it works extremely well. I would absolutely recommend it!
I got this Dymo Label Writer mainly to print return address labels for our annual holiday cards etc. I was intrigued by the simplicity I perceived by the product description along with the fact that this machine requires no ink or toner. I typically only print labels once a year and it is such a waste of money to continually buy printer ink only for a couple of pages of labels a year and just let the ink dry out. Set up was quite easy and by far the longest part of the process was downloading the Dymo software on my dinosaur of a computer. Loading the labels was a little intimidating at first with the number of steps required but everything was labeled nicely within the printer to be able to follow along with the instructions. I did have a slight issue with getting the labels to feed correctly, but that was easily remedied with a couple extra attempts through the steps. The software automatically detected the size of label I had in the printer and I simply hit print and was done with my project within 5 minutes! The Dymo software has a very simplistic interface where you can quickly find what you need to create your label. If you are really wanting to dig in and make something fancy, the software has many different settings and options for you to play with (varieties of font, clip art, you can upload your own images like a business logo, barcode, QR code etc.). The printing on the label itself is pristine and clear. I also love that you can buy rolls of Dymo Address Labels for so cheap ($20 on Amazon right now for 2100 labels through the Dymo store)! One feature I would suggest for future models would be mobile printing ability. As a Stay At Home Mom, I don't really get on a physical computer much and I am constantly on the go. There already is a Dymo app on the Play Store. I downloaded it and hoped to connect the Dymo Label printer via a USB-C -> Female USB cord I already had and the app wouldn't recognize the printer. This would have made use of the Dymo Label Writer way more accessible for me and would have given me a much larger range of use. Either way, I still love this Dymo Label Writer, it is a superb product and I would definitely recommend it for all your labeling needs!
