First off, this is a great pedal, as is always true of EQD. I got it specifically to make my drum machine sound alien and out of this world, and the Rainbow Machine does just that! However, it is difficult to dial in a setting that is very useable on guitar, and requires some tweaking to get what you want. As is true with many of my EarthQuaker pedals, it takes a lot of experimentation to find all the sweet spots, but when you do, there’s nothing else like it anywhere!

This is a great pedal for getting those pitchy warpy wobbly sounds from tape stretch to just crazy chorus trails. I use this pedal with both guitar and synth that’s the best way I can verbally explain it. This pedal isn’t for everyone a definite acquired taste.

Wow... Can do anything from traditional chorus sounds to organ-esque pitch shifting textures (if dialed correctly), but the real joy lies in that Magic button. Whether using it in fixed or momentary positions, it’s just so so fun to tweak the regenerations! Wouldn’t call this the most versatile pedal in the world, but what it does it does VERY well. Just make sure to do your research before you pull the trigger on this one.

Absolutely love the sounds this thing can produce, however, the knobs are extremely touchy, and it's most practical use is to use it as a chorus pedal, and it's difficult to implement the sounds this pedal creates into something that can be used often.

This pedal adds some great depth and other worldly modulation. Great for either chords and lead lines behind a big band. Recommend this pedal for fans of ambient sounds and the avant- grade.

So much more than that rainbow sound!
2 August 2020

Everyone knows it makes that crazy rainbow sound, but there's so much more in there. Amazing chorus, but I like to set the primary pitch slightly off center and then add a little a magic in there. It creates a really nice subtle movement that never feels boring. If you don't mind experimenting a bit you can find a ton in there. Cheers!

Tons of Fun

I gotta tell you, I am not a talented player. I do not know anything about technique or what notes are what, I learn how to play by ear. That being said, this pedal is awesome. Loads of fun. Use it as a pitch shifter to give your solo's or playing some unique sounds, or if you want to have the audience feel like they are flowing through an acid trip, hit the magic switch and enjoy just some strange reverb/modulation that just makes this pedal just crazy!

Very cool pedal
20 July 2020

Overall:I like EQD and was drawn to the Rainbow Machine due to its unusual sounds and cool graphics. I’ve read reviews that sing its praises and others that dismiss it as a novelty and I understand both sides. It makes some interesting sounds, but it does take time and finesse to make it work musically. I think EQD should really have more instructional material available for this pedal. The sound clips on their site are awesome, but it’s not clear how to recreate them. I now just look for images of this pedal on peoples rigs and set mine up that way and see how it sounds.

The Rainbow Machine is a digital pitch-shifting beast that thrives on synthetic chaos and makes no apologies for its artificial nature. Built around a deliberately imperfect DSP pitch warping engine, this pedal creates real-time polyphonic harmonies using digital oscillators that are coloured with cosmic digital dust. The Pitch control sweeps from a fourth below to a third above your input signal, with noon as the unison position, while the Primary function adjusts the harmony volume and can be controlled via expression pedal. Fine-tuning your sound comes through the Tracking control, which adjusts lag time between wet and dry signals, and the Tone control that rolls off treble for darker, vintage-style sounds when turned counterclockwise. The Secondary control adds octave harmonies - above when Pitch is set above noon, below when it's set lower, or creates triple-tracked chorus voices at the noon position for shimmering textures or low-frequency rumble. Where things get properly mental is with the Magic control, a regeneration system that feeds Primary and Secondary signals back on themselves to create aliasing and other digital artifacts. Starting with subtle repeats at low settings, increasing the Magic unleashes resonant pitch-shifting delays, metallic flanging, ascending pixie trails, controllable self-oscillation, synthetic noise squalls, and eventually full distortion. Combined with the Tracking control, it generates wild pitch takeoffs, chaos chorusing, and general sonic mayhem. Both the Magic and Activate switches offer momentary operation - hold them down for temporary weirdness, then release to return to your standard tone, or press normally for latching operation like any conventional effects pedal. This flexibility makes the Rainbow Machine perfect for experimenters and noisemakers who want to dive deep into synthetic soundscapes without losing control of their performance.
