Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
Elantris: gigantic, beautiful, radiant--filled with powerful individuals who use their magical abilities to benefit all the people of Arelon. Yet each of these godlike beings was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of Shaod. Then, ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, feeble, leper-like creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling. The Shaod became a curse. Arelon's new capital city, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris, which its people do their best to ignore. Princess Sarene of Teod has come to Kae for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping also to find love. Sarene learns instead that Raoden has died, and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat from the imperial ambitions of Fjordell, a city filled with ruthless religious fanatics, and whose high priest, Hrathen, intends to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god. Now Sarene alone stands in his way. But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspects the truth about Prince Raoden's disappearance. Taken by the same strange malady that felled the gods of Elantris, Raoden was secretly imprisoned within the dark city. His struggle to create a society for the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

Brandon Sanderson is by far the best sci-fi/ fantasy novelist I have ever encountered. Elantris was a book I have been meaning to read and I finally purchased it. I am in love with the storyline, characters, and the phenomenal magical qualities which vary throughout each of Sanderson's series

Let me start by saying that I put off reading this book for far too long. Elantris is a book that has appealed to me for years, and it has sat on my shelf staring me down. Why did I not pick this up sooner? Well right after I purchased it I started seeing a lot of people saying how bad the book was. And sadly I let that get to me.Why did I decide to finally pick this book up? I saw Brandon talking about this book on one of his live streams and it made me really want to give it a try. He was not promoting it just talking about it in general. What I didn't realize before was that this was his debut novel. Yes, that makes a big difference: you can not read an author for years then go back to their first published book and expect it to be at the same level that they ... MoreLet me start by saying that I put off reading this book for far too long. I loved it! Brandon has a way that just pulls you into the story. I love how the story has a history including a religion. It makes the story feel more substantial. A number of the characters defy stereotypes within the world and I found that to be refreshing. He pushed the bounds of the society's beliefs with his characters and that had a deeper meaning that is very relevant today. Sarene is strong and witty and she encourages the other women in the court to embrace being strong and smart. This book does so many things right that I just don't usually see in Adult Fantasy books. If this book is just sitting on your shelf I encourage you to pick it up now!

One of Brandon Sanderson's greatest pieces. Flung straight into the action of a concept of a fantasy dream world, turned nightmare. Compact book, easy to carry with you and read.

I have been looking to start a new epic for ages now, i have gone through many good ones but have been struggling to find something that excites. From the first page this book grips you. You defiantly know its going to not disappoint. The main characters are likeable and you start rooting for them and wishing a happy ending from the start. The copy of the book was not very great.
The book I received was damaged. The binding was worn away and the book showed water damage and black marks on the top of the pages. I was super disappointed that this book would be shipped like this condition to a customer that paid for a new book.
Elantris is the first book by Brandon Sanderson and also the first book in his Cosmere universe. I really enjoyed this book a lot. It's very different from how Sanderson builds up his stories in later novels. In this one, the city of Elantris was one capital of a kingdom and an amazing city home to great magic. And those who could perform it. Transformed by magic into something more than human. But then something went very wrong. An event known only as the Reod changes everything. The city is now rotting, and home to those who once would have used the magic. But who are now turned by it into something else entirely, creatures who are almost zombie-like.Raoden, once Prince of the kingdom falls prey to it. Just before he is due to be married, in a union that will unite two kingdoms against religious imperialists of another. As Raoden is forced to live in Elantris and tries to change things there, his intended bride tries to change things in her new as well as protect her old home. Many secrets are about to be revealed, and all their lives will never be the same again! While this book is not Sanderson's best work it is a great read and a great first novel.
For being Brandon Sanderson's first novel, he knocked it out the park! Stunning opening and dramatic conclusion, however it did drag a bit in the middle. As a compete work however, it's a must read!
Sandersons first published novel. It shows, but the plot is fantastic. Its a fantasy book that doesnt fall back on physically impressive characters or typical tropes to engage you.
Reading Sanderson's current best-selling work, it's no surprise that he hit the ground running with a debut novel as good as Elantris. Strong characters, intriguing magic systems, and a constant sense of looming political and social collapse, make this an exciting book, and a perfect introduction to the work of one of today's greatest working authors.
All the excitement, suspense and character development of a trilogy in a single novel. I read this novel in one day and absolutely loved it!
