Git gud, stop hating on the game of the decadeThis game far exceeded any of my expectations. I was a causal player through DS3, Sekiro and Demon Souls remastered, but my goodness this game is in a whole tier of it’s own.Open World: I have about 20 hours in the game and I haven’t even got to the first main boss yet, just because there is literally so many options of things to do in this game. Each corner of the map has something worth exploring and you’re very rewarded for doing so. This game is absolutely massive for an open world game. I think there’s something wild like 83 bosses available to fight in this game, it’s crazy. The graphics: people are hating on this game for not living up to PS5 exclusive “next-gen” graphics, but so what? I think there’s something wild like 83 bosses available to fight in this game, it’s crazy. The graphics: people are hating on this game for not living up to PS5 exclusive “next-gen” graphics, but so what? We’re at the point in gaming history where there really isn’t much further to push. This game by no means has “bad” graphics, they’re phenomenal. Sure they aren’t pushing the limits into a new unmatched level of graphics, but you certainly won’t find it lackluster by any means. I found the world beautiful and have yet to get tired of it. To add to this, there are many areas of the game that are just so well designed in terms of being dark and creepy that it actually invokes a small degree of anxiety which is great, it really adds immersion to the role playing aspect. It really draws you into the game. The combat system: I saved the best for last, oh boy get ready. The combat system in this game is INSANE. This is the culmination of everything FromSoftware has created in terms of combat. There is an unbelievable degree of variation in available play styles and builds, as well as enemies you will encounter. The combat system is so satisfying and so engaging. The amount of different attacks there are for each class of weapon is just insane. Not even beginning to mention the Ashes of War mechanic they added to the game, this also really switches things up for the combat system. Albeit, this is a tough game. There is one difficulty for this game, there is no easy mode(at least in the settings.) There will be many points in this game where you’re ready to give up, but here’s the beauty for you newcomers: it doesn’t have to be tough. This game isn’t like previous Souls games in the sense you HAVE to beat said boss to progress. There’s 2 factors that have changed this: 1. This game is open world. If you’re really struggling on a boss, you feel like you can’t beat him yet, you don’t have to. There’s 82 other bosses you can go encounter, countless Rune (XP) farms to go farm. Go level up, go get stronger weapons and come back when you feel better about it. You’re not stuck. 2. Spirit Ash summons. Spirit Ash summons are basically the way FromSoftware has implemented an “easy mode” into the game. These summons may not necessarily be the most powerful allies to bring into battle with you, but they certainly are sufficient allies to have with you to draw off agro and allow yourself to recollect yourself before heading back into the fight. Don’t get frustrated, and don’t let these bad reviews about how “difficult” this game is deter you from purchasing this game. This game will win game of the year, and will certainly go down in history as the best game of the decade, this is the Skyrim of the 2020’s. I’m certain even Bethesda’s next game of the Elder Scroll series will not even come close to topping this game. Git gud.2 people found this helpful

MasterfulI'd like to say that Elden Ring harkens back to the "good ol' days" of gaming when developers understood the difference between player agency and accessibility, when hands weren't held, abusive monetary practices weren't ever heard of, UI/UX not destructive, and the journey itself was the journey itself. Thing is, I don't think anything fairly precedes Elden Ring at all. This game is masterful by nearly all accounts of game design, of entertainment at large, that matter to me.A million other reviews will tell you what this game is, but what is it to me? Elden Ring is an adventure, a world that I turn on and don't want to pull away from not because it is addictive like a psychologically abusive MMO or mobile game, but in the same sense of not being able to ... MoreMasterfulI'd like to say that Elden Ring harkens back to the "good ol' days" of gaming when developers understood the difference between player agency and accessibility, when hands weren't held, abusive monetary practices weren't ever heard of, UI/UX not destructive, and the journey itself was the journey itself. The smallest details that have little to do with the main progression are substantive and fulfilling, continuously, consistently. Is the game difficult? Yes and no. Elden Ring breaks you in at your own pace. Trouble with the first boss? Explore the world, get a good summon, farm some runes, find some gear. This freedom makes Elden Ring the perfect starting point for somebody new to this style of game. It's a Soulsborne trainer, really.Combat is exciting. Victories feel earned. Massive adventures abound. What are you waiting for?3 people found this helpful

Elden Ring truly is the Game of the Year without debate. Whether that be because of its great bosses, beautiful landscapes, or its large arrangement of weapons compared to previous soul-like titles. Starting with the bosses, Fromsoft does it again by providing fun, distinct, and quotable bosses. Each main boss has their own style. For example, Margit is a boss who has swift moves that chain into long combos. While bosses like Fire Giant have large one-shot moves that are easy to dodge. Moving on to the landscapes, no other souls game has made me stop and just take in the view. Areas like Atlus Plateau and Limgrave are examples of beautiful set pieces, while areas like Calied and Mohgwyn Palace are examples of purposely disgusting to show how dangerous they are. One final thing I would like to touch on is the weapon variety of Elden Ring. This game has a total of 308 weapons. 88 more weapons than in Dark Souls III. And all of them are completely viable. I played with a fist weapon and beat up all the bosses like I was Rocky Balboa. While some say that the weapon I used was one of the worst in the game, damage doesn't become an issue in the latter half of the game. Overall, don't sleep on this game. I have played many of the souls games and by far this is the most user-friendly title. If you are ever interested in trying out a souls game, this is the place to start. I cannot wait to see what Fromsoft will have in store for their upcoming Elden Ring DLC. Thank you for reading my review and I hope to see in-game, fellow tarnished.

Dark Souls on a larger scaleJust what I thought Elden Ring would be. The open world is huge and immersive with a lot of places to adventure about. Sure the difficulty can be off putting to none Souls/Borne/Sekiro fans, but the earlier areas are easy enough to get you acclimated to the difficulty coming later. I’ve put in about 39 hours and I’ve technically spent my time riding around the world finding maps to see how big it is and boy it doesn’t disappoint and surprises you the deeper you go in.There’s another reviewer who gave the details on the game so I’m not going to repeat what he said but one advice; go in blind and enjoy the world.Edit:Clocked in 100 hours and the game haven’t lost its touch. I’ve sharpened my rolling skills, participated in multiple invasion and PvP content and still loving it. I believe I’ve only uncovered 60% of the map since taking a peek on the whole map online. The story is great and the feeling of discovering something have not dwindled one bit. Me and my son are enjoying this game with the help of group passwords. If you’re still reading this then that means you are interested and should go ahead and buy this game.Update:After 200+ hours of fun and discovery I finally got the platinum trophy. People complaining about the game being hard have to realize that it does have an easy mode except it is not in the options menu but the items you uncover during your travels. You’re missing out on one of best experience in gaming just because you’re too used to handing out rewards in a silver platter. If you are buying this game, take your time, learn the mechanics and enjoy the game. The full price is way worth it and without microtransactions or DRMs to ruin your experience. If you are still reading this then what are you waiting for!? Put this in your cart and buy it. See you inside tarnished!9 people found this helpful

This game is what I would love to call a masterpiece. Aside from the extreme difficulty and the fall damage glitches this game is amazing. To start every single boss has their own moves own music own rewards for killing them this also includes huge in-depth ways yo gather recourses and things like remberances and great runes that make the game so much better. A lot of weapons have insane cool ability’s that’s allow you to do maybe a huge chain of attacks in the air or send a huge flame at enemy’s if you know what I mean. Also there’s tons of different possibilities when it comes to making the hero of you dreams. The scenery is amazing the fighting, scenery, quests, voice acting and anamtions are all incredible. If you get a Game Over screen; you must pick up your body from where you fell or lose all the currency (runes) you’re carrying (which is used to level up and purchase equips). If you get another Game Over before reaching your body from a checkpoint, you’ll lose them forever. You can cash the runes at bonfires/Grace points, but enemies will respawnSeeing the many quality of life improvements. If this is your first game and enjoyed it; playing past games after will be a lot more challenging/frustrating due to this game’s improvementsMoving forward with this review, when I’m doing comparisons it’s in reference to their past titles by FromSoftware--Story:Plot: The elden ring is broken and scattered throughout the land. You must collect them all and restore the land and become Elden Lord. Have some Lord of The Rings vibes when playingWay better lore than past titles. No more vague/cryptic/metaphoric few sentences and one liners from NPCsYou are a silent protagonist. There are some core allies you follow on your main quest and at some point must choose sides--Graphics/PresentationGood art design, but have dated graphics. Much improved from past titles especially in character design and visuals of magic.Personally, don’t like the dark gloom color palette (aside from the highlighted trees) template of the overall world, and grass/foliage/environments could look better especially with the bad texturing. Draw distance is bad for an open world game, but are hidden by foggy areasThere are some frame rate drops and pop-in from time-to-timeMusic is very good and provides great atmosphere for the music tracks. The quality of the sound is a bit lackluster compared to other AAA games when using headphones or surround sound--Gameplay:Now an “open world” game instead of interlinking areas. Vague in terms of directions on where to go (no waypoint markers). Can use ‘guidance of grace’ to point you to the general area or talk to NPCs for hints. You just have to wander around for new areas, no quest markers or objectives to follow. The “open world” just gives you an escape route to train/explore in other areas until you get stronger to fight the boss you are having a hard time with, instead of staying in the same area or fighting the boss over-and-over againWith the option in mind; like other open world games where you do constant sidequests, can take down bosses easily (or more than past games) if you get over leveled /get way better gear than intended for the boss. When doing this, took me a few tries instead of several dozen to take down a boss. It’s not one hit kill or button mash to win, still must effectively dodge/block and attack at the right time. There are more bosses (although some repeats with more minions) in the game compared to past titles so you are less burdened with high HP of enemies. When you do encounter the repeat enemies you get more satisfaction of having learned their attack pattern before from longer term memory then constant immediate failure.A lot of classes to choose from. In the grand scope of things, it doesn’t really matter but good to choose what best fits your playstyle as you’re not able to re spec until way into the late game. Just the base stat and starting equipment are different. You are not locked into a playstyle. For beginners I’d go with Astrologer or Vagbound (just swap out some armor so you can roll better). There’s a keepsake you can choose at the start. For beginners I’d go with Golden Seed which gives you an extra flask. Advance players should go with Stoneward key for more challenge through opening more challenging dungeonsThere are 6 major areas connected to a central hub. Need to collect map fragments to expand your map. Not able to go anywhere you want from the get-go as you need sword keys to open up certain areas. There are high leveled enemies in the overworld giving you hints on where and where not to go (unless you’re in for a challenge)Grace points acts as bone fires. Able to level up at any grace point instead of the Hub areaThere are also check point statues, so you don’t have to back track as much upon deathAble to fast travel from anywhere without consumables or present at bonefire. Exception being when in dungeons and if you’re still in the battle phase.Check points and Grace points are more generous in this game that back tracking when Game Over screen appear aren’t as devastating (still need to get back your downed body though)There is crafting in the game now. Need to find or purchase cookbooks to craft more itemsThere are hidden mini dungeons and legacy dungeons (long linear levels)Have a horse. Can summon in overworld, and use it to help attack. When mounted your equip load don’t matter and will always travel at same speed, but you do need to keep track of stamina especially if your’e battling with spells on horseback. When not in battle can spring up to go to high out of reach areas via wind current pads.-In terms of combat, it’s what you expect from a Dark Souls game with some quality of life improvements, and more emphasis on magicLight/heavy attack, dodge, rolls, magic, crafted items, and potions.Collect runes from enemies. When you get game over screen, you must go back to retrieve your body to get runes back. You don’t penalized if you don’t collect your body like decreased healthBetter hitboxesGuard counters. Able to block and parry. Can do charge attacks for more damage, but leaves you openMagic tend to be a bit more powerful than physical attacks.Able to summon animals/ghosts to attack for you. Their attacks are weak and only useful for causing distractionMore weapon arts options. Basically equipable special attack for your weapons. Some damage scale, so good quality of life feature there.Equip load. Heavier the armor is, the slower your movement. Equipment load is based on endurance rather than strengthAble to duel wield. Weapons act differently depending on which hand you equip them onCan do stealth attacksSprint to get around. When sprinting in open world area, will not drain stamina. Stamina is only affected during combat.Free jump and crotch. Able to jump and attack for more strategyCamera now make pillars/environmental obstacles blocking your sight transparentOnline component similar to past titles: leave notes, co-op, and pvp invasionsOverall fun game if you want a challenge. More approachable Dark Souls game, but still not for those who get easily frustrated by losing constantly. Must put in the work and have the patients, reflexes to beat the game101 people found this helpful

I had bought this game over 3 weeks ago, on Elon Musks recommendation (saw one podcast online where he praised the game)I've came to a realisation this game doesn't have a purpose or a story in that matter.I've been playing it for over 20 hours and still can't figure out what is the point of this game.Controls are awful and there is an input lag which makes playing fast paced battles very hard. There is no story or narrative, you just roam around the map and get absolutely slaughtered if you wander into any enemy. Most items are accessible through in game menu which is no good when you are in a fast paced combat, or should I say when you are being slaughtered lighting fast, you will never get a chance to use whatever you want to use.I've been a gamer since ... MoreI had bought this game over 3 weeks ago, on Elon Musks recommendation (saw one podcast online where he praised the game)I've came to a realisation this game doesn't have a purpose or a story in that matter.I've been playing it for over 20 hours and still can't figure out what is the point of this game.Controls are awful and there is an input lag which makes playing fast paced battles very hard. There is no story or narrative, you just roam around the map and get absolutely slaughtered if you wander into any enemy. Most items are accessible through in game menu which is no good when you are in a fast paced combat, or should I say when you are being slaughtered lighting fast, you will never get a chance to use whatever you want to use.I've been a gamer since Sega Mega Drive, and have to say this is the most overrated and overhyped game of all time.Avoid it to avoid very bitter disappointment

Elden Ring is a must play for fans of From Software’s previous titles. To newcomers the quality of life upgrades may make this a great entry point into the series, however your enjoyment is going to depend heavily on the type of gamer you are, please read on to find out of this game is for you.The series’ storytelling has always been obscure and this is true of Elden Ring as well, with cutscenes being sparse and exposition being handed out via easy to miss NPC dialogue, descriptions of items you pick up in the world and environmental storytelling. If you are the sort of person who enjoys being placed in a large world, rich with lore to piece together and fill in the blanks with your own theories and imagination then this will appeal to you, however if you are ... MoreElden Ring is a must play for fans of From Software’s previous titles. If you are the sort of person who enjoys being placed in a large world, rich with lore to piece together and fill in the blanks with your own theories and imagination then this will appeal to you, however if you are looking for a more traditional narrative or simply cannot dedicate enough time for this then this may not be the title for you (alternatively, there are many great lore channels on YouTube for those who are interested in the lore but do not have the time or patience to try to piece it together in-game). The open world of Elden ring is beautiful, vast and has much to offer for exploration. While necessarily some of the tightness of the masterful level design of Dark Souls 1 (with its looping pathways and clever shortcuts) has had to go due to the open world nature of the game, this is more than made up for by the intricate care and detail which has gone into this world. Hidden paths, huge cavernous structures, woodlands, coastal areas, wildlife and roaming bands of soldiers come together to make this feel the most alive of any From Software title to date. The combat is deeper than ever and feels like a blend of From Software’s previous titles. This is still the slow and methodical timing-based combat we know from Dark Souls, as opposed to hack and slash (if you run in and wildly mash buttons you will still die), but it takes inspiration from previous titles Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 and Sekeiro, providing options which allow a more aggressive approach. This includes strong attacks after blocking or parrying, the ability to stagger opponents with strong or successive attacks, weapons which build poison or bleed effects with successive hits and items which raise damage with multiple strikes to name but a few options. In all this leads to the most deep combat of any From Software Title yet and forces the player to learn a variety of techniques and adapt on the fly. At its core this makes the game more difficult as it is less viable to learn one play style and stick to it throughout the game, however as we will see next this is counterbalanced by other features. Finally the elephant in the room: the difficulty. Now there is no denying that this is a challenging game, and if you were to play it like a traditional Souls game without any of the new features Elden Ring adds then it is arguably one of the hardest in the series, however there are several options that have been added or return from previous games which actually make Elden Ring one of the easier games in the series for new players. Firstly, the summoning system returns, allowing players to summon in help from more experienced players or NPCs for particularly difficult encounters. Secondly, you can now summon spirits to help you and these can be upgraded in the same way as weapons can. These help distract bosses, keeping some of the pressure off and allowing you to make far more mistakes than you’d usually get away with. This has been done very well as those who are asking for an easy mode now have options to make this game more manageable and those who want a brutally difficult experience are free to ignore all these features (as well as ignoring armour and any weapon more exciting than a wooden club for those who particularly enjoy suffering). Even with these features you can still expect to die often and if you are the sort of person who will be frustrated by this then this probably isn’t the game for you, but if you enjoy a challenge but have found previous Souls titles a bit much then this may still be worth a try for you.Overall this title gets a perfect score from me, it’s a must buy for fans of From Software games and may provide a great experience for those looking to get into the series.

[Rewarded Review] Elden Ring is bad, actually
5 April 2023

I don't understand the hype. This is a bad game—and that's not something I'd say lightly. I don't just mean it's not perfect for me, personally, although I realize the gritty aesthetic is part of what some people like; it straight-up comes across unfinished! In the few hours I played, these qualities stood out:1. This game HATES the player. It doesn't even try to hide its antagonism—and, no, I don't mean difficulty. Every bit of text serves to do anything BUT help, from the startup message harassing you for not quitting the game properly to the grumpy tone of the admonishment you have to read through every time you start the game without an active PlayStation Plus subscription.2. Utter lack of narrative. There is no clear purpose to undertake, nor any reason to ... MoreI don't understand the hype. This is a bad game—and that's not something I'd say lightly. Utter lack of narrative. There is no clear purpose to undertake, nor any reason to relate to the protagonist. You get an ancient-history cut scene to start, and are told to "seek the ring." That's it. I'm fine with having no map markers or other basic QOL features that have become ubiquitous to make games feel less like work, but NOTHING here compels the player to play, other than that they can push buttons and watch corresponding effects on screen, as if that should be entirely enough.3. Every facet is noticeably sloppy. For example, the background music loop of the first area audibly ends and restarts abrasively. They could've smoothed that out, but NAH. That type of blatant disregard for quality everywhere: graphics, audio, "narrative," mechanics, etc.. This is what I mean about the game seeming unfinished. For $70, all these elements together seem to laugh in the player's face. Gotcha!I probably would've ignored it entirely if a friend didn't talk me into getting a copy. But now I'm out that money, salty, unfulfilled, and THAT, to me, is the only compelling aspect of Elden Ring. What a letdown!

[Rewarded Review] One of the best games of all time
9 February 2023

FROM Software has shown how open world games should be done in creating yet another masterpiece. Not since the legend of Zelda breath of the wild has an open world video game inspired curiosity and wonderment like this. You never know what you will see next and the map keeps going and going. Entire massive areas could be skipped if you aren’t careful. Scouring the map is rewarded as there is an abundance of content unlike any other game. Everything is immaculate: the level design, the enemy design, the art, the music, the feel of combat. There are a million ways to play with different weapons, armor sets, magical abilities. You really make this game your own, and everybody’s experience will be a little different. George RR Martin’s world building creates an engaging story with history that can be felt. When you play this game, you are transported into his and Miyazaki’s imagination, and can easily be lost for hours. Elden ring is loaded to the brim with secrets and discovery that will make you feel more rewarded than any other video game. The learning curve is steep but breaking through that difficulty or frustration is oh so satisfying. While still very challenging, this game is more accessible than other Souls like games in that you don’t have to face every enemy at a given time. You can simply explore elsewhere and come back even stronger and easily whup the foul beast that was giving you trouble earlier. The plenitude of magic in this game also provides an easier route to tackling some of the more difficult foes in the game. If you’re even slightly curious, give this game a shot because there’s nothing else like it.
