You think you would want to see the battery status without having to go into the settings. This is the only reason I take away one star BUT you do not need the app to have it stay at the default 135 degree temperature. The battery life has a reported use time of 1.5 hours, I got pretty close but I think external environment temperatures varied a lot. Your mileage will vary with temperature settings and battery use. This makes a great gift for the espresso lover in your life. I already have plans to purchase a few for family members and friends.

I had been looking at Ember mugs for some time, but just never could understand the hype or really the effectiveness of them. After using one for a week I have to say I'm really impressed by this little cup.Initial setup is pretty simple, you don't even need the app to use it right out of the gate. By default it is set to 135, which is probably a good temp for most host beverages. Pairing it with the app is easy, and I like the quick options in the app to select the type of drink currently in the cup. The app will show if it's currently heating, or waiting for the beverage to cool itself down to the desired temp. It will also show if it's heating up to temp as well.I found that the claimed battery life of about 1.5 hours without charging to be accurate. Though I recommend putting it on the charging coaster often, as charging from a depleted battery does take quite a while.Milk drinks like cappuccinos or lattes will coat the side of the mug in a milk film unfortunately. Presumable because the cup needs to be slightly hotter than the holding temp, to keep the entire beverage at that temp, I haven't checked surface temp while heating but that's my guess.Regardless of that it's easy to clean, the soft texture wipes up very easily by hand with regular dish soap. The only annoyance I have with it is it never really turns off. Sure you can hold the power button for 3 seconds to"turn it off" but I find it wants to come out of sleep at the slightest touch so I never really know if its off. If it's sitting on the cradle charging placing anything down nearby that causes it to move ever so slightly, has the status LED lighting up like a Christmas light. It's off? Or is it? Check the app....ok it's actually off. Why are you lighting up when I'm not even using you? I'm probably being pedantic here but it does bother me enough to point it out.Overall it's a great product, I never realized how quickly regular mugs lose temp, and how great it is to sip a beverage and have it be hot for the entire time you're enjoying it. The price makes it a tough pill to swallow, but lit really is a fun experience overall.

I should have just gotten the mug.

My drinks stayed warm for as long as the battery lasted, keeping that freshly poured taste. In fact they got slightly warmer as I drank them, since the main heating element seems to be at the bottom of the cup. The tech works....But it's a six ounce cup.To me, the appeal of this thing is that it lets you keep sipping and savoring your beverage over several hours. But even at my most conservative, I don't spend hours finishing off six ounces of liquid unless I'm out in the field occasionally sipping out of a thermos. At first glance this looks like something you can nurse, but that's only because a full third of the cup is taken up by electronics. What's more the electronics add a ton of weight to the bottom, making it a bit uncomfortable to hold without a handle. The best use case appears to be to keep it right next to a carafe so you can pour small portions and have them heated back up - but when you do this it doesn't keep that fresh poured taste and I'm left wondering if I'm actually any better off than I would be if I'd just nuked it.I'm sure that somewhere out there there are people who like to go through an espresso one tiny sip at a time, and they will probably love this thing. But for everyone else, I'd recommend you just spring for the mug.

Keep Your Coffee the Perfect Temp!!!
8 June 2022

From your first sip to your last, the Ember Smart Mug will keep any drink of your choice the perfect temperature. The Ember smart mug is able to maintain the temperature of your favorite hot beverage for about 1.5 hours on the built-in battery and you can even run it all day with the provided charging coaster. This smart mug holds about 6 oz. of favorite hot beverage so it is ideal for espresso, cappuccinos, or even coffee. To start off you will need to download the Ember app and pair your mug to your phone. You will need to use the application to adjust the temperature of your beverage anywhere between 120 to 145 degrees and will send your phone a notification once the temperature has been reached and provide you with the battery status. One thing to keep in mind is that ***THIS PRODUCT IS NOT DISHWASHER SAFE***, this is handwash only and is submersible up to under one meter of water but I would not recommend that you try that.Overall, I am very impressed with the Ember Smart Mug. I have been using this now for a few days and I honestly have no complaints, it’s a solid product, it does what it is made to do all while looking amazing in a matte black finish.

Keeps hot beverages... hot
16 June 2022

The Ember Smart mugs aim to solve a small inconvenience that many coffee and tea drinkers often encounter -- that the drinks just don’t stay hot enough from the first sip to the last. This latest model, dubbed the Ember Cup, has the smallest capacity in their lineup at 6 oz, but if you’re not a “big mug” coffee or tea drinker, it just might be the perfect size for your needs. The cup itself has a minimalist design: a smooth, matte finish, no handle, and inconspicuous branding with a single status LED at the bottom. The cup sits 3.25” tall with a 3” diameter, and 2” interior depth. The reason why the cup is so much shallower than the overall height is due to the electronics and re-chargeable Li-ion battery packed into the base. So while the cup may look larger from the exterior, it still only holds 6 oz. On the bottom of the cup is a single power button in the center, and around it are two gold metal ring charging contacts. When placed on the accompanying charging saucer/base, two small pins will touch the rings no matter how the cup is oriented, so precise placement is not needed. Since charging is not accomplished through induction, you won’t be able to charge the mug with other wireless charging pads like a Qi charger, however, additional charging bases can be purchased separately and are compatible with all Ember mug models if you want to have multiple places where you can set your mug down to charge. The coaster bases use a standard barrel-style plug with wall adapter and need to be plugged into an outlet. A full charge takes about 2 - 3 hours. The way the device functions is pretty straightforward; power it on, fill it with your hot beverage of choice, and a heating element in the base keeps it at a temperature of your choosing between 120°F to 145°F (or 50°C - 62.5°C). If the drink is hotter than the set temperature, the cup simply allows the drink to cool until it reaches the target temp. When it falls below that temperature, the heating element kicks in, and the LED will pulse white and remains a solid white while holding at the target temperature. It can keep your drink hot for up to 90 minutes on battery power, perfect if you want to take it when you roam, but be cautious of spills as it has no lid/cover.If you set the cup on its charging base, the temperature can be held constant indefinitely, though there is a 2-hour inactivity auto-shutoff feature that can be reset by simply picking up the mug. Note that the battery won’t increase in charge if the mug is actively maintaining temperature on the charging coaster. It’ll only charge when the cup is empty or is powered off by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds.Out-of-the-box the default holding temperature is 135°F, which I found to be a pleasantly hot and drinkable temperature for café au lait and cappuccino. The reasoning for not allowing higher temperatures is that this can degrade the flavor of a beverage over time, curdle drinks containing milk, and is a potential scald risk as well. To change the temperature setting, you’ll need to pair the mug to a mobile device via Bluetooth and install the Ember app, which requires you to register for an account. To enter pairing mode, simply press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. In the app you can also customize whether or not to receive push notifications when your beverage has reached the set temperature, change the temperature units to Celsius, and choose a custom color for the status LED. Your LED color will illuminate upon powering on/off and each time you pick up the mug, as it has a built-in accelerometer to detect motion and help multi-mug households identify individual mugs quickly and easily. When the cup is empty, it’ll automatically enter sleep mode and will not actively heat, though it will remain paired with a mobile device.Keep in mind this cup is not designed to “heat up” cold drinks quickly, as the heating element delivers only gentle warming and increases the beverage’s temperature about 1 degree every 10 seconds. In fact, if the temperature of its contents is under 100°F, the heating element will remain off, unless you manually change the holding temperature; changing this value will engage the heating element even if your drink is cold, but not if the mug is empty. Pouring in any drink that is at least luke warm, above 100°F, will automatically start the heating element if the cup is on and below the target temperature. One quirk I found is that if the cup is placed onto the charging base within about 15 seconds of powering it off, it will automatically power on again and connect to the most recently paired mobile device, if it’s in range. While it should still power off after 2 hours of inactivity, I nonetheless found this behavior a bit strange. The mug is neither microwave nor dishwasher safe, so hand washing with a soft sponge is the recommended cleaning method. You should also completely dry the mug before placing it on the charging base as the gold contacts and rings may be corroded by liquid, which can in turn cause charging issues. It seems a bit unexpected that the coaster base would not be waterproof though, since they're usually meant to catch spills and drips. You also won’t want to use metal utensils in the Ember, as this can damage the finish, so you can pre-mix your drinks before pouring into the Ember or use wooden or plastic spoons instead.Overall, the Ember Cup does the job it’s intended to and keeps a small amount of my hot beverages precisely at my desired drinking temperature, whether that’s tea, coffee, espresso, mulled wine, a hot toddy, etc. The battery life is decently long, and the charging base can extend that to last the whole day if need be. Its care requires a little extra mindfulness to keep it pristine, but I suppose that’s the trade-off for a relatively niche, "nice-to-have," luxury gadget.

I’m not sure why they didn’t go with a USB-based charger, but everything works, so it’s not really and issue. If the Cup isn’t already on, press center of the bottom to turn it on and put it in pairing mode. Then place the Cup on the saucer to charge up while you set up the app. After installing the Ember app, just open the app and tap “Pair new device.” The app will find and pair with the cup so you don’t need to first pair via Bluetooth (at least on a current iPhone. Every Ember Mug has a status LED on the front and you can choose that light’s color to more easily identify your Mug from someone else’s of the same model. The app will tell you the Cup’s battery level and whether there are any firmware updates (yeah, for your coffee cup!). If you have an Apple Watch, you can also install the free app for that and see your Cup’s current temperature without reaching for your phone. That’s basically it for setup. You can also choose favorite settings for your hot beverages; like 135F for Coffee or 150F for Tea, etc…Details - Typical Usage:While there is added flexibility and customization when connected to the phone or watch app, you can also easily use the Cup without the app. Pour your favorite hot beverage and the Cup will turn on and keep it at 135F by default. Take it off the charging coaster for up to 90 minutes to keep your drink hot while you roam. When you’ve savored your last sip, the Cup turns off the heater. You can buy extra charging coasters to have them available wherever you typically park yourself and drink, but the Cup is completely compatible with the saucers for all other Ember Mugs. When you’ve finished your drink, just hand wash it in the sink. It’s completely waterproof for hand washing but I wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher. One thing to note is that the bottom of the Cup (and the Mugs) has metal contacts for the charging and a rubber non-slip pad. While this all water-safe, there are nooks and crannies that always seem to trap a bit of water no matter how well you dry it. If you put your freshly washed and dried Cup on the charging coaster right away, some of that trapped water will leach out and moisten the charging area leaving a wet ring between the Cup and the Saucer. This won’t cause damage, but I’ve gotten in the habit of placing my washed mug upside-down on the coaster for an hour or so to air-dry before flipping it right-side up to charge again. As you can see from the attached photos, this new Ember Cup is basically a smaller version of their other Mugs. It holds about 6oz whereas the “regular” Mug holds 10oz and the larger Mug holds 14oz. There is no handle on this one, but I like the feeling of grabbing the cup by the sides. Even with freshly-brewed coffee or tea inside, the outside is comfortable to hold, so no worries about the lack of a handle. Conclusion:This Ember Cup has everything that’s great about the larger Mugs but in a smaller size and without a handle. The same great apps, the same great features, and a fresh handle-less design let you savor your favorite smaller hot beverage for as long as you want.

Smart cup for sipping tea or coffee
14 June 2022

I tend to drink my coffee quickly, but this cup is perfect for my wife who prefers to enjoy her coffee as she works. The small size works perfectly with the small setting on our coffee make (Keurig). The cup was pretty much what I was expecting, but I was surprised at how useful the app is. I am even thinking about getting another one for my daughter who enjoys tea, since the app has a tea timer and can tell you when your tea/coffee has reached the set temperature.Pros- Nice looking, with quality feel- Customizable LED for indicating status and battery level- Temperature setting is accurate to just a few degrees and the cup even knows when it is empty- Tested 90-minute battery life set at 137 degrees (more than enough for this size cup)- Great app with useful ... MoreI tend to drink my coffee quickly, but this cup is perfect for my wife who prefers to enjoy her coffee as she works. I was hoping it was inductive but it is just a set of contacts that are designed to touch a set of rings on the bottom of the cup. It hasn’t happened yet, but I could easily see a spill being the end for this cup if the contacts aren't well sealed.- Ember does offer larger cups, but this one is small. I think the size you get comes down to personal preference, but this works well for people who sip their coffee or tea.- There is no handle, the cup is smooth with a slight curve and has decent weight for its size. The surface has a nice texture and it fits well in your hand, but it still requires care in the way you pick it up/hold it so you don’t drop it.- This is my fault, but I have filled it and forgot to turn it on before. This situation makes the bottom mounted power button seem a little inconvenient.

The Perfect Cup of Joe

I have been super curious about the Ember cup since they first started releasing them. I go back and forth between drinking hot and iced coffee. When I drink iced coffee and seem to gulp it down rather swiftly, but hot I normally finish my fist cup quickly but take my time with the second. So much so that I normally end up having to toss out the second one because it gets too cold. The idea of keeping my coffee the temperature I wanted was very intriguing.Fist off the presentation when unboxing this is very nice, and instructions are straightforward on hot to get started. You get a few warning labels, things you might expect when using electronic devices around liquids; hand wash the cup only and keep the sensors on the cup and coaster dry to keep from corroding, ... MoreI have been super curious about the Ember cup since they first started releasing them. You get a few warning labels, things you might expect when using electronic devices around liquids; hand wash the cup only and keep the sensors on the cup and coaster dry to keep from corroding, as well as a reminder that you shouldn’t microwave the cup since it is electronic. After all the initial charging and setup within the Ember app I was pleasantly surprised by a feature that I was not expecting. The Ember app has a feature called, Ember x Health that connects to Apple’s Health app on the iPhone. The idea is that the app can auto log your caffeine consumption and compare that to your heart rate and sleep patterns if you are using an Apple Watch to track that information. I love this extra layer of insight into how caffeine consumption is affecting my general health. The million-dollar question here is, does this cup manage to maintain the temperature you are looking from your perfect cup of Joe. After a few days of using this the answer is absolutely. Now the cup itself has a battery that can maintain your temperature for about an hour and a half, but the great thing is that if you just set it on the coaster/charging station it can keep that temperature all day. At first, I was going to keep the coaster near my coffee station, but I have decided to move it to my desk since that is normally where I enjoy my coffee in the morning. Another bonus aside from the Apple Health integration is that I normally wait a bit for my coffee to cool when I pour a fresh cup. The app and status light will show you when it has reached your target temperature. The status light does this slow pulsating effect when your temperature is moving towards its desired goal, and then stays steady when it has reached the correct temp. Again, a nice little feature that I really enjoy. After a few days of using this Ember cup I can easily recommend it to any avid coffee drinker. Keeping your coffee at your preferred temp is a great feature that I wish I had started using much sooner. Maybe you gulp down your coffee faster than it can cool, then I think the Apple Health integration might be something you will enjoy. It automatically logging your coffee consumption should be interesting to see your patterns and how it might be affecting your heart rate or sleep patterns. This would definitely make a great gift for your techie coffee drinkers.

The mug assists in maintaining temperature control for beverages. Of course, this is an absolutely luxury item to be able to maintain a drinks warmth instead of slowly cooling; however, if this is a luxury you desire, the Ember 6oz will help to achieve. An important detail, is being a smart mug this product requires hand washing, with the bottom charging saucer is to remain dry, so just need to be careful. The small size of the cup utilizes app functionality well. The Ember app allows for control of temperature, rather than there being a large interface on the cup to adjust temperature. The max temp being 145F. Even without the application, the cup will maintain temperature but limited to no specific temperature control. Having this interface results in a more streamline appearance of the cup itself.

Works great but double check size and 6oz limits

I’ve heard of Ember cups for some time but never felt compelled to buy one because I quit drinking coffee for awhile during Covid. I found I added way too much sugar and creamer and found it was just too many extra calories. But recently, I started drinking more espresso based drinks like Cappuccinos and Macchiatos or just shots of espresso with no added sugar, just frothed or flat milk, so this 6oz Ember was perfect.I’ll start by saying 6oz. just isn’t as big as you think. Even though I got this just for Espresso drinks I wish it was 2oz bigger. The cup is comfortable to hold but heavier than expected and also holds much less liquid than you would think because the heating elements, batteries and electronics are a good 1/3rd of the total height of the cup. With ... MoreI’ve heard of Ember cups for some time but never felt compelled to buy one because I quit drinking coffee for awhile during Covid. Even though I got this just for Espresso drinks I wish it was 2oz bigger. The cup is comfortable to hold but heavier than expected and also holds much less liquid than you would think because the heating elements, batteries and electronics are a good 1/3rd of the total height of the cup. With a double shot of espresso roughly 3oz. the other 3oz filled to the brim with cream or frothed milk is just barely big enough for your typical cappuccino or macchiato.I also didn’t love the huge AC adapter, it’s generic, large and just not very attractive. It’s also a pin-type, I would’ve much rather seen a USB-C plug on the charging coaster and either USB-C or A that connects to a small wall wart. This would make it possible to plug into the wall or into any USB port so you can just move the coaster and not have to also take the AC adapter. All of that said, the Ember itself works amazingly well, especially if you don’t want to steam or froth milk. I sometimes just add a splash of cold creamer or milk to my drinks and that obviously drops the temps of the drink. With Ember, you just set the temp in the App (really the only thing the app is used for) and it rather quickly warms the drink back up. My espresso came out at 147F, after adding creamer it dropped to 132F but within 7-8 minutes it was back up to 145F.The downside is doing that used about 1/4 the battery level, but I only drink 1 espresso a day and the Ember definitely made the drink more enjoyable as temps stayed hot throughout the drink. Typically temps drop immediately and faster the less liquid that is leftover.Overall very happy with this Ember, but I do wish I got a larger size for more flexibility on drink types.
