The Epson ET-8500 was a replacement for a previous Epson XP printer. I'm a home user printing photographs and documents but am not a particularly heavy user. Cost wasn't really a consideration and the Eco Tank system attracted me. What really sold it though were the comments from a number of well respected review websites regarding the print quality of both photos and documents. I was seriously impressed setting up the printer, it has to be the easiest printer ever to set up. Everything from filling the ink tanks, to setting the wireless connection and downloading the software was extremely straightforward. My initial experience with this printer has been extremely positive. The small footprint, build quality and appearance are excellent. I am very pleased with the quality of the output and the low level noise when printing. Epson Smart Panel compatibly is an added bonus. I'm loving the rear feed, great for photographs, as they feed straight through. My only slight disappointment is that the ink wells are opaque and don't show the the colours and levels as they do in the advertising literature.

So far so brilliant. It used a lot of ink to prime, but I expected that. As with all printers there is a learning curve to getting the best out of photos but straight out of the box it is impressive. Coming from a Canon Pima six ink printer, this Epson has far less whirs and clicks between print jobs which gives me the impression at least, that it wastes less ink on cleaning and purging itself. Its [ET-8500] design is functional and no work of art but the controls and screen are very good. It does need more paper profiles in my opinion and I believe a good few are available from other sources.

I know it's expensive, but after careful consideration of my needs, I took the plunge and purchased the Epson EcoTank ET-8500. I was not disappointed. This is my first refillable ink tank printer, and I was impressed with how easy it was to fill the printer's internal ink tanks for the first time. I haven't yet used up this ink, so I can't comment on the refill process, but I'm sure that it will be as easy as the first fill. You can't get a colour into the wrong ink tank because the ink bottle nozzles are 'coded' to only discharge when inserted into the correct ink tank filler. Also, you can't overfill an ink tank because the filling process terminates when the tank is full. Excellent! No fuss - no mess! The 70ml ink capacity in each refill bottle will clearly ... MoreI know it's expensive, but after careful consideration of my needs, I took the plunge and purchased the Epson EcoTank ET-8500. I'm sure that this is the way all inkjet printers will go eventually. The ET-8500 replaced two previous printers, both of which had failed (printhead failure). One of these was used for 'office' documents (text, graphics, spreadsheets, etc) and the other for photo printing.I wanted to combine these roles into a single printer to save worktop space. This is often a tall order, in that printers tend to be optimised for one or other role. However, the ET-8500 achives a good balance and is working well.Office documents print with crystal sharpness, and graphics are also crisp. The real benefit was photos. Provided that you use 'proper' photo paper and make the appropriate media selections prior to printing, photos are a delight with excellent colour reproduction and no banding.I accept that the ET-8500 is not a top-end professional photo printer (which would have upwards of 8 ink colours), but with its 6 colours, it does an excellent job for family pictures. I have even entered photos printed on the ET-8500 into competitions. I took the view that if I needed a high-quality 'art print', I could upload images to a print house.

I purchased this used item on Ebay UK. There was no installation disk, but despite this I found it easy to install using the Epson website. I had been concerned that it was not shipped top up, as recommended. However, there was no ink leakage or problems with setup. Ink was already loaded with approx 75% levels. One head cleaning was required before the test page was satisfactory. Print quality is good on paper and CDs and DVDs. I am glad to get rid of ink cartridges at last, and I have now disposed of my 2 previous Epson Photo printers with CD printing ability.
My old printer, having given good service for many years, was becoming so expensive to run due to the cost of the ink cartridges.Having done much research I chose this printer as the best fit to replace my existing one.Whilst the materials it is made of are not of equal quality to my old printer, the cover for the scanner being rather flimsy, the print speed and quality from this printer is superior. It is so easy to fill the individual ink tanks and after printing over 1,000 A4 pages that contain multiple colour graphics and many A4 full colour posters, emails, reports etc. over the last seven months I have had this printer, the four colour ink tanks are still three quarters full and the two black inks are just reaching the half way mark. My old printer would have consumed three sets of cartridge replacements by now at a cost of over £100.I especially like the Epson Smart Panel app that can be downloaded onto a smartphone and connects to Wi-Fi so that the printer can be controlled remotely from the app. It also displays the amount of ink left in the tanks. In conclusion, whilst it is more expensive on the initial purchase compared with cartridge printers, in my case, the savings on ink cartridge replacements has made it worth the investment.
I ordered this with some trepidation as it seems quite pricey for home use and modest volumes. After a month or two I am in no doubt that it was a good call. Quality of text, graphics and photos is exceptional. Wireless connectivity is reliable. Paper handling is superb: I can keep my A4 paper in its tray and at the same time place different papers in the rear feed as needed. On top of these, it is good-looking, compact, quiet and has six ink tanks. The initial outlay seems smaller every day!
The quality of printing has so far been very good. The printer has though only been used for printing documents so can't yet comment on photo printing, copying or scanning.Set up was straight forward and links to phones, laptops etc work well.I like the compact size, quietness and speed of printing. Also like the ability to use an app to choose and review documents for printing.Dislikes:Printing tray opens automatically but needs to be closed manually. Can only seem to switch machine off using app on phone rather than at the machine.App is dominated by an option to buy ink.Front of machine has an information screen. Having had Canon Printers for many years we were getting a bit fed up with them failing after a couple of years. The Epson was expensive but looks like it will last many years. The ink lasts so much longer it is hard to believe, but it does last And that is a huge cost saving. The quality of the printing is exceptional and the machine is quieter than most. What more could you want. Well worth the investment.
JL service fabulous. Setting up printer was straight forward; unpacking, removing transit tapes, Ink loading and getting the app. Use the link on the paper 'get started' document for the right App. Connectivity to Blue tooth devices and Wi-Fi was also achieved without any drama. The printer runs a print alignment routine, which is very thorough and worth taking time to get the settings right. If you have inquisitive children/grandchildren, place the printer in a place of safety. There are moving parts which pop out or pull up which could be very attractive to a toddler! The output from the printer: photos are stunning quality and text is very good with some bleed through if printing double sided on light weight paper. The scanner functions are very good - but do check where the scan is being sent and the file format. Copier function also good. Overall, the upfront outlay may seem scary, but over a 2 to 3 year period on average use it will be cheaper than buying a good quality inkjet and ink cartridges. If I was looking for an 'office' printer to do lots of text, spreadsheets etc, I would get a LaserJet type printer. As an all-round home printer its great and for us the photo print quality is the big win.
Impressed with this printer so far although build quality could be more sturdy. Set up and connection to Mac, Ipad and Iphone were straightforward and they all communicate well. Ink tanks were easy to fill and print colours appear true. I will use the printer more for artwork than photographic but have tried both and am happy with the results. Not keen on the presets so am avoiding these. The rear feed tray is useful but you do need to turn the printer around to access it. Printing is single sheet only from the rear feed but quicker from all others. I have not had it long, yet, so no idea how it will stand the test of time, but ink cost is very low which was the main reason I bought it, along with its ability to print on thicker media.
