I did my research, I even called the I Drink Coffee store to chat with a sales representative who schooled me in several aspects of my buying choices. The grinder is heavy, feels and operates like premium equipment which I hoped for. The digital display is spot on, being beautiful and easy to use. Highly recommend the grinder, and this shop is on par with Amazon Prime for shipping speed. Full marks to I Drink Coffee. Highly recommended.

This grinder and forte are about the same price. Both grind great. The difference I see between the two, is the mignon has a single knob to adjust the grind whereas the forte has two step grind adjustments for coarse and fine adjusting. Because there is not no marking, I mix up coarse and fine which is a pain. The forte has a nice funneling ring which guides the coffee into the portafilter. I did a lot of comparing before buying this grinder. Eureka has a solid reputation for design and reliability. It comes with a powerful motor and excellent sized burrs. It is also very compact and if you are height limited because of cabinets above, this is well suited. Coffee grounds retention is also very minimal. The large burrs make grinding very fast and I’m able to grind 20 grams in less than seven seconds. It also looks great and it’s heavy enough so that stays put on the counter while running. Unfortunately they typically cost twice as much. Before the XL arrived, I had ordered and received an after market single dose bellows. It replaced the bean hopper which I haven’t bothered to even unwrap. This made a good grinder even better, but it seems like Eureka should include this or at least make it available to purchase as an accessory. If you choose to go with a single dose bellows, I advise you to use a dosing cup to catch all of your coffee as you compress the bellows. The rubber mat and tamping station aren’t worth using. While the mat looks good in photos online, the material is sticky and holds spilled ground coffee. The only way to easily clean it is to pick up the grinder, remove the mat and then rinse it off. If you do it once a day or more often, it becomes a chore. Instead I ordered an aftermarket 3D printed mat that is made out of hard plastic. This can be easily wiped off with a wet towel or sponge or if you are OCD like me, it can be vacuumed up with a mini hand held vac. This only takes a few additional seconds when you are cleaning up the counter. The tamping station is pretty ineffective. I have an ECM portafilter holder that allows me to securely WDT my grounds and tamp or use a distributor hands free.Bottom line: I found that it was worth spending an additional $100+ to customize this grinder. So far I’ve used four different types of beans in it and have found that is very easy to dial it to each roast. The grinder is good enough so that I can get away without doing any WDT to each dose, but I’ve incorporated that step into my work flow as a personal choice and not necessarily as a limitation of the XL. All in all, this is a very nice grinder and I’ve been very pleased with it so far.

God grind quality; inconsistent retention
11 December 2022

Nobody wants retention. However, if given the choice between retention that is exactly 2g every time or retention that is always under 1g but varies from 0g to 1g inconsistently, I would take the higher, consistent retention. If I run this on timed doses, I never get the same amount out, so even after dialing in, I still have to weigh every dose.So I thought to myself, “just convert it to a single doser.” I bought the angled base and bellows hopper, and it is now set up for single dosing. However, retention is now somehow even less consistent. So now I am weighing every dose at before and after grinding.21g in, 20.2g out. 21g in 21.3g out. 21g in, 19.7g out. 21g in, 21.9g out. So I bought this. What a mistake. Now I get to start saving up for the Atom 75 from scratch. Such a waste. My advice: if you have $1,000 for a grinder, keep saving until you have $1,400, and go with the Atom line.

Great grinder!

Great grinder, can’t go wrong with it.However, I don’t know if it’s worth the extra premium over the Specialita. While I have not owned / tried the Specialita, I have researched it extensively.Of course this has the bigger burs (65mm vs the 55mm on the Specialita), and the patented “diamond technology”.The stepless adjustment is fantastic, and it makes great grounds, no doubt about it. Very few others will match or beat this grinder at this price point. However, you CANNOT use this grinder without a dosing funnel / portafilter guard. It has a lot of static (has improved since breaking it in) and the spout design is just not that good and makes the coffee goes everywhere. It has a lot of static (has improved since breaking it in) and the spout design is just not that good and makes the coffee goes everywhere. The funnel / guard solves that problem though. But seriously, the spout needs a redesign and the shoot needs to be a lot more accurate. It also has noticeable retention, something I did not expect at this price point, and I don’t think it has an edge over the Specialita or its competitors in this department. A good shake / tap will be required after every round. The portafilter holder, although padded with rubber on the XL, is finicky and flimsy, and you cannot really use it if you’re using a dosing funnel. This should be a much more solid design at over a grand $.However, I would still recommend this over the Speciality because the accessory kit you get included in the box alone costs like $90 plus tax separately. So the difference now is a lot less and with the bigger (and supposedly better) burs, might as well spent that extra bit now that you’re close to the $1k mark anyway.Would definitely recommend this grinder overall.

Great machine!

I really like this machine. I am glad I was warned to give it two weeks to break in. It actually took less than that and it is now consistently giving me the same output as I put into it, and the grounds are staying in the portafilter basket. Also, after the reviews I had learn of people hating the mat that comes with the machine, I was ready to throw it away and not deal with it. I am glad I didn’t do that! It is very easy to clean up, with a lightly damp wash cloth, and I find it to be very useful. I love how easy it is to change the dial settings, though if I were to make any improvements to this machine it would be to allow me to store more time settings into memory - haha! - - but then I would be nit-picking. Just what I was looking for
3 September 2021

My third grinder. Bought the perfetto first and it's great. Does pour over and espresso, but if you switch between the two, you'll find that you're having to re-dial it in for espresso, making <0.5 mm super micro adjustments to get in the ballpark. I got sick of that and made it my dedicated pour over grinder. Then went for a Ceado single doser at twice the price of the perfetto and thought it would be my holy grail, but then found that it's espresso range somehow also lives in frustratingly narrow range, and for some reason, a 36g 30s shot one day, gushes at 18s the next day, and chokes up at 52s the next day. Give me a break. Just couldn't win, took me 3 shots to get in range every morning. Nope.I returned it and bought the XL. And, like the perfetto, it is ... MoreMy third grinder. And, like the perfetto, it is producing reliable gooey goodness, day after day. An occasional tweak to the grind setting yes, to be expected. But I'm not having to re-invent the wheel every morning. The best part, for me, is the grind adjustment. It's smooth, beautifully readable and just, workable. I don't need to make a hairs width micro nano adjustment to make a change. I can make a comfortable, one-hash-mark adjustment and get an expected result. That just makes the whole process more enjoyable. I'm not chasing some ghost with my fingers crossed. And I only need to do it every few days, as the beans undergo subtle change with time I suppose. So yea, the thing is built like a tank, delivers the goods, and is a pleasure to use.Oh and it's working beautifully as a single doser.

Perfect for my needs

Background - I was looking for an all purpose grinder and an upgrade from a good conical burr grinder (Baratza Precico). I single dose filter and expresso grind but would also like the flexibility to use beans in a hopper. After many hours of reviewing, I decided on Eureka. I liked Eureka’s long history, designed, made it Italy, and their reputation. I am sure the Specialita would have been great but I stretched my budget and ordered the Oro XL. Thanks for Clive who helped talk through grinder options. This review is based on using the Oro XL grinder daily for over 4 months. Initially I used the hopper with the programmable time dosing and the last few months for single dosing for filtered and espresso daily. The Oro XL is a heavy impressive grinder. Initially I used the hopper with the programmable time dosing and the last few months for single dosing for filtered and espresso daily. The Oro XL is a heavy impressive grinder. The hopper is the perfect size for me, well designed, and good quality. The hopper fits in the top snug and I like how the bean shut off works. Gravity feeds the beans flawless (even with fresh dark roast). The grind setting knob is quality and has perfect resistance. It is step-less but has 30 makings (1-10 and dashes in between) for a full rotation. This allows for making extremely minor adjustments to the grind, great for dialing in your espresso. I have no problem going more than a full rotation for my filter setting. To remind me if it has been turned more than once I simply use a golf ball marker.I like the included quality mat, tapping stand, and brush. I believe Eureka included this to insure the grinder is rock solid when it is first engaged due to the high rpm. I do not think the mat it is difficult to clean mentioned by some reviews.I was surprised that included hopper works well for single dosing. I have no need to get a special signal dose hopper. It is extremely low retention as reported. I am averaging .1. I tap the shoot with my catch hopper or portifilter to get that last .1-.2 g out and it is amazing how often there is 0 retention using this method. If you do not single does, the retention to clear out the grinds after shutting the hopper has averaged around10g.As reported, the program timed dosing is consistent for the same bean/grind setting. I like the design so I can sit my scale directly under the grind shoot to measure the weight of the dose.I have not had almost no clumping, excellent consistent grinds, almost no static. The grinder is quiet and fast (3.25 g/s average).I have only cleaned the grinder once using a vacuum from the top and did not have to take the top burr out. On only one occasion, the grinder was semi clogged (grinds were not coming out at the normal 3.25 g/s rate). I carefully cleared this up by cleaning the shoot from the bottom up (using a cake testing tool). This worked well and avoided taking the machine apart. I have used the grinder for more than four months since and have had no issues.I continue to be impressed with this grinder and would recommend this grinder. I would also recommend Clive for their excellent customer service, just outstanding.

Very Inconsistent Extractions and No Web Support
14 November 2022

I bought an "open box" XL (black) to upgrade from my 10-year old Baratza Vario-W (recently fully reconditioned). The first thing I noticed upon opening the box (other than the heft of the grinder itself) was the bean hopper and the rather flimsy hopper cut-off assembly, compared to the substantial affair on the Vario-W hopper, but no big deal. The grinder comes with a shiny "sticky" molded mat for the grinder to rest in. That mat is a DUST/GROUNDS MAGNET, and requires constant wiping down - its really more problem than help.I used Counter Culture Big Trouble beans through a Profitec 700 with a 20 gram bottomless portafilter and St. Anthony's leveling and tamping tools to tryout the XL and compare it to my current grinder. The XL is quite easy to dial-in from a time/volume stand-point. It's fast and very quiet compared to the Vario-W. The grind adjustment wheel feels firm and precise. However, I encountered two (2), well actually three (3) deal killing problems with this grinder:1. First, the grounds shoot deposited grounds too close to the front of my portafilter, so I consistently had to stop the process to level the grounds, moving them away from the front before I continued.2. After going through 3 bags of Big Trouble, I could not get consistent extractions using the XL. Most pucks seemed to have cracks and "fast" spots to the point of frequently "spraying" espresso outside the cup.3. Eureka has one of the worst websites in the trade as far as support is concerned... especially compared to "good ole" Baratza! To speak precisely, NO SUPPORT. I called the retailer tech support number. The representative could not trouble shoot or offer work arounds for the 2 issues I described. "We haven't had many complaints..." Well, here's 2!I returned the grinder and received a refund.I learned that I REALLY appreciate my "old" Baratza Vario-W... very constant and predictable extractions, albeit with slower and more noisy grinds. The Vario-W with it's grounds bin is in practice ,much cleaner to use than the XL - very few scattered grounds. Then there's the world class Baratza support over all these years. I'll keep my Vario-W!

XL Upgrade from Breville Smart Grinder Pro
7 December 2021

I recently upgraded to the Eureka Mignon XL from the Breville Smart Grinder Pro. I was happy with the SGP for three years and honestly the new grinder hasn't made a transformative difference in the quality of the coffee I'm making. Unquestionably, the Eureka grinds more consistently with less clumping, it's vastly quieter and it grinds about 18g in 5 seconds as opposed to 30 seconds for the SGP!! In terms of build quality, a recent guest remarked it 'looks like jewelery' on the counter and it's incredibly heavy for the size. The only downside is that it's quite messy and honestly, I wish Eureka would come up with a dedicated dosing funnel that fits around the chute because ones with a cutout are hard to find. The included mat and brush is fine, but I'd still rather ... MoreI recently upgraded to the Eureka Mignon XL from the Breville Smart Grinder Pro.
