I've got a Ludwig Centennial maple snare that I played with the factory reso head intact for years. I swapped the batter to my preferred Evans HD dry and it got better but still wasn't totally happening... thought it sounded "congested"... factory heads were Remo Made-in-China jobs... that "looked" pretty decent, so I didn't suspect it as being the problem. Finally broke down and bought the Evans 300 reso... when I took the factory head off I realized it was MUCH thicker than the Evans... and that's what was killing all the tone... put the Evans on and WOW!! the drum just OPENED UP... with a cutting whack and sensitivity that just was not there before... turned a dog of a snare into a prized jewel. MF pinged me to write a review of this, so here it is. Evans makes a good product. Particularly for a snare side head, not a better (or worse) product than Remo or Aquarian. With batter heads, someone may prefer the sound of, say, Remo Pinstripes over Evans EC2s. But the snare-side head will hardly matter. Get whatever of the "big three" snare-side heads are on sale, or if you like to match, get whatever brand complements the brand of your batter head.

I broke 2 Hazy 300 heads. I am a professional drummer and have been playing for 37 years and prior to this have never broken a snare bottom head from playing. I thought the first one was a fluke (it did last 6months before breaking) The second one broke during my 8th show. I do love the sound, but will need a more reliable head.

I bought this for the resonant snare side due to the reviews it got and how it was suppsoed to make my snare sound better. Well I put it on the snare and every time I tightened it, it kept making a crackling noise. I thought it was the new wood hoops I was installing. Long story short, I tightened down to the tone of my other snare (Sonor Maple the same model I currently have with a different lug hardware, but the same...I have 2 of them because they sound that great) and it made a loud snap, and the head was broken at one of the lug points. So I put back on the cheap 9-10 year old Remo UT head that the Sonor snare came with and it worked great! Pretty sad when the one that comes with the snare is better than the Evans one I paid extra for. I use nothing but Evans ... First off Evans makes some of the best drum heads on market. Their easy to tune, which helps in finding that sound you've always been wanting. This snare side head here pairs well with the Evans Genera HD dry snare head. It gives me that crack from snare rim shot I've been looking for. With this snare side head I'm eager to pair with other Evans snare batter heads. The best part about it is you don't have to be a drum tech to get to your preferred sound. I've used Evans 200 and 300 bottom snare side heads over the years when I could not find my go to Remo Hazy snare side. I was very disappointed each time. The tone of Evans bottom head sounds muted, nasally...like the drum has a cold. It has to be the chemistry of the mylars in the head that for me, just does not produce a pleasing response or tone. Just tried tuning up the bottom Evans head on my new Mapex Wraith snare to a fairly high tension. It it popped even though the tension rods did not feel like they were even close to being maxed out.I Will never use Evans bottom snare heads again....I tried.
Wow... I can't believe how much more sensitive this head is compared to the Ambassador snare side that I have been using for years. I play metal but need something with high sensitivity to capture rolls, faster blast beats, and ghost notes. This head is completely responsive to every hit, large or small. Granted, I crank my heads up, and the snare is an older 13"x6" Black Panther (best snare drum on the planet, period), and I used a Genera Dry batter (so zero ring and all snare definition) but I'm so impressed by this head that I'm dying to replace the snare sides on my other two snares as well to see how they'll change.A word of warning though, this thing is merciless. It will not allow you to be sloppy. Any and all mistakes will stand out... LOL
I recently put a thicker bottom head on and my drum sounded good, but dry. I have not used a 3mm head before and after reading about certain differences in sound I thought I'd give it a try. My snare gained some depth in tone, volume and I think it is fatter and wetter now. I am very pleased with the new sound and overall change I hear.
This is the go to head for snare side. Always used these. Have to let sit tightened for at least 24hr. I sometimes get a weird rattle (not buzz) from the snares (specifically the plate the snares are welded to) if I only let sit overnight. So if you are experiencing this, no worries, just let sit tightened up longer, then re-tune.

The sound of my boxes turned semi-metal like plastic, unnatural;, drier and less buzz. Finally I ended up removing the Evans Hazy 300 and buying Aquarian Classic Clear (has the same roughly 300 thousand but better sensitivity).In my view, for its versatility for all styles, it is preferable to use (cost the same):1. Ludwig X-Thin2. Aquarian Classic Clear snare side3. Remo Diplomat snare hazy.3. Remo Ambassador snare hazy.With any of these get better sensitivity in the snare wires at any volume ...
